  1. Love the video. However, I love the Caribbean island hoping but I also want to Europe and sail all the way to the black sea. Then what? which blue water-capable boat can I get without going over 70k? Beneteau Oceanis?

  2. I’ve been watching many of these shows. I cannot understand why if properly optioned, why would you not take the Hunter 41 across the Atlantic. I see many that use it for that purpose. Then people who say they wouldn’t. Thanks

  3. I see a lot of people crossing the Atlantic in production sailboats. Their goal is more than crossing from east to west or west to east. The end result is island hopping, the Caribbean, or locations hopping, the Med. I wonder what boat might be the best compromise boat, as close t bulletproof as possible and still a near condo on the water. People might just like to hear your opinion.

  4. Keel-stepped masts being somehow more secure is a strange assumption. The only failure mode of a mast which isn't catastrophic for the boat is a break above the deck level. The strength of the keel stepping itself is completely irrelevant (although it invites failures of it's own), even unstayed masts should be designed to break above the deck. Any boat which loses it's deck with it's mast is doomed.

GGR boats lose their keel-stepped masts regularly, but at least they lose them above the deck.

  5. As a long-term sailor myself I can say you did a really good job the only thing missed is the the handling in a tight situation I can tell you from personal experience the IP is a PIA. There are certain situations in winds and room that the IP can't be coxed into turning around if a bail out is needed

  6. I love Catalinas! The 355, and 385 are high on my list. However, I would choose battleship over a bullet anyday. I started looking at the Hanse line, then Catalina looked a bit sturdier. But then, I fell for the full foil, and Brewer bite boats like the Gozzards, Island Packets, and a few of the deck salon cruisers from Sirius, CR, Nordship, and the Nauticats. A beefy motorsailer or a Slow, sturdy full keel, keel stepped mast, and the whole tortoise and hare analogy.

  7. Just too big still for me. Had an IP35, lost in storm. What would you replace it with for two people living onboard in Bahamas….think draft and cost but with reasonable comfort. Will likely not get IP35 again…would like better PHRF. Must at least be seaworthy enough for Carib too.

  8. MY sailing area is shallow waters, e.g. the Vatten sea, European canals, and rivers.

So my boat will need a very low draft. That means some kind of lifting keel, and internal water ballast, so when – not if – the boat run aground, I can get rid of some ballast water, sail out to deeper water and refill the ballast water again, and then move on.

I also don't need a long boat, because everything I need is not far away, e.g. groceries.. I'm looking for an around 22ft LOA boat, with a slim beam (because that won't require much energy to move it: The boat only needs a few kn of wind speed, before it begin to approach hull speed.

Engine: electric: The power can come from solar panels, or a portable diesel generator. The generator is used for the hotel load too.
Bonus: Diesel-electric (serial hybrid) propulsion saves around 40% fuel, because there're no longer a mismatch between RPMs and torque.

Marinas inside the CEVNI area are cheap, and for any marina there's a lot more berths available for small boats with a slim beam.

  9. I'm a total convert to Island Packet Tim, and YouTube hid this video from me until today. That IP 380 has two downers for me Cutter Rig, I loathe as much as Ketch Rig. Kiss Principles (and balance – No Sailcloth at extremities for seesawing for me, 3 reef or 3.5 reef ideally Battenless in Mast Furling Triradial Offshore spec Main, so when things get ugly, o.5 reef just to keep things nicely central. 125% Genoa, and a Furling Reaching Code Zero to help fill in the wind Angle Gaps, last downer, only two heads and Showers. Aft Cockpit with sugarscoop access for Tender, decent Cockpit size, indispensable for Cruising real Shallow Draft Oh downers for me personally, are those frequently specced really annoying Captain's chairs in the Saloon. Bench Bunks with Lee Cloths to Port and Starboard thanks, making two decent Heads and Showers indispensable Brilliant Galley, as needed, is with all IP Sailboats I suspect. So for me, the inly real problem with the IP 380, is it isn't an IP 420, as the 420 seems to be the minimum of what .I Need to fit everything in, doubt I'll find one, so huge sigh scrunched eyes, crosses fingers, holding Breath – piggybank please fill up enough for a new IP 439 so all the boxes needed to be ticked for Disabled me, that can go into a new build construction and won't need much if anything too custom left to add on- solid sidedeck rails could makebme gulp I suppose, but I'd better have them, that sort of thing. . I might just be able to order one in the second half of this year – breathes out. othing wrong withbthe other boat at all, but getting one modded to be able to cope due to disability, would probably cost more than an IP 439 all in. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob in Wales. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

  10. Er, no sugarscoop on the IP 380 ? I'm sure I saw a sugarscoop on some ? Catalonia, definitely a nice boat, and good value. Island hopping, Shallow Draft long keel is perfect, just not the IP 380. The IP 420, and 439 are plenty fast enough for Cruising on, and keeping stresses at a sensible non Racing 80% so expensive stuff doesn't keep breaking, like things on Racing Boats do. Get there ahead of me by an hour, or a day, good on you, but I'll keep enjoying the journey thanks (and tbh, I bet I wouldn't be far behind you anyway, and close enough to give you a Tow when you break something. Bob. 😅😅😅

  11. Ive seen people that have one around the world in Catalina 30s and hunters they're fine lol as long as you have a good radar you can track the weather a seventeen year-old woman what around the world in a j17

  12. There is no comparison . Recently I traveled to the BVI to sea trial a IP 380…just the boat featured here. On the trial in 12 to15 knots she never toped 4.4 knots nor sailed higher than 57 AWD. In other words: very slow. (And yes, the Owner assured me the bottom had been recently scrubbed.)
I am not a racer, having owned a Hans Christian 48T for 32 years and most recently a Bristol 45.5, both good fast cruising boats but hardly racers, but I do appreciate a boat that sails. Based on my experience I would say the IP 380 does not. Nor was it particularly comfortable below. No stall shower, very small galley, poor nav area but it did have a pullman master bunk. It also had decent fit and finish, and good quality hardware . Having spent 14 years cruising in the Caribbean my opinion is: go for the Catalina unless you can afford an Oyster.

  13. From an old cruising sailor: The ocean hasn't changed. Once you are out there, you are at the mercy of whatever the wind and ocean throw at you.
Old sailboats have long keels; keel stepped masts; shrouds that fasten to the edge of the hulo, leaving decks – your working areas – free of shrouds that the racers demand; 7 degree sheeting angles. If I have to learn to play a harp before I can carry a box of beer bottle down my deck, I want no part of that boat.
If you want a party boat – 30 feet long that sleeps 6 – where do you store their clothes? … food to feed them all? …. can they all stand up in the cabin at the same time? ….
A good sailboat has to be a very elegant trade-off between boat requirements for being a safe and efficient sailer under all conditions, and adequate storage requirements for food, crew, and boat equipment.
I must have a keel stepped mast, and be a long keel vessel. I want no spade rudders or propellers hanging out there waiting to catch a lobster trap warp, or fish net. Believe me, it will happen, and according to MURPHY' Law at the worst time possible. Boat design fashions change – the sea doesn't change

  14. Another comment: Any sailboat has to have have at least three anchors or more.

You need a main anchor; then you need a spare main anchor, which chain and rode, if you ever lose the main anchor: it gets stuck on something and you can't retrieve it; a powerboat idiot wraps it around his propeller, and you have to cast off your anchor rode till he sorts out his problem, and can give you back your anchor and rode. You need a lunch hook. you need a stern anchor to stop your boat if the engine quits while docking, and finally you need a heavy storm anchor, with lots of chain and 300 feet of anchor rode, as your anchor of last resort.

  15. Agree with your basic idea of 'what suits you best?". I love Island Packets. They look like what a sailboat should look like. But I'm on my second Catalina and I'm all in. For the money it checks the boxes. I'm not crossing oceans and instead I need the floating condo and comfort to suit my lifestyle. Catalinas are all about comfort in a coastal cruising context on a budget.
