Spre Penobscot și dincolo, partea 1 | Ep. 179

Astfel începe croaziera mea Down East, deși încet din cauza vântului slab. 1. Hi Kevin, Ruth Avery really looks good from the drone footage. Thank you for that. As always, grateful for your video. Will you be at the US sailboat show in Annapolis?

  2. Would you speak to the pros and cons of self steering via a vane like you have set and balanced sails and lashed helm like sailing emerald steel and Slocum made do with? I am sure I am missing some vital piece of information to make this an intelligent question.

  3. That’s home for us, each year we plan our cruise and we never seem to stray too far. There are umpteen spots to drop the hook within yelling distance, a few would be ideal for that particular wind direction. Cheers!

  4. Love the tips on the wind vane. I was considering one of those for my boat.
Do you have an episode that you talk about the wind vane handling heavy weather?

Spending a week sailing with you, would give anyone far more value then an ASA course 😂. You should offer it once a year. Someone can buy a week aboard for lessons on advance sailing skills.

  5. Gday there I like your channel,
I admire your sailing ability having spent many years sailing a keel boat with no engine. Now 45 years later still sailing and enjoying it.
    Happy sailing 👍

  6. Hey Kevin. Great video! I think what I’ve realized I like about your videos is that you out doing it all – intellectual knowledge for practical use. The Reading on the shelf steering vane is my example of that.
But all in all I’m just really glad to have adventure to look at while I sit in my arm chair 😁

  7. I particularly enjoyed your strings singing early in this episode. And then the power of the code zero seemed to have Ruth Avery singing as well. Nice one! Fair winds!

  8. Hello Kevin. Thank you for another excellent insight into cruising. On this particular voyage how far south do you intend to sail? Safe journey.

  9. After 50+ years in the business, there are few men I would mention in the same breath as Col. Hasler but Kevin is right at the top of that list.
Great drone footage of the new code z …..

  10. To the Penobscot Bay area! If you come by via the Eggomoggin Reach, I am right across from the Wooden Boat School and Brooklin. Come get a hot shower and a home cooked meal. I have a spare mooring. Depending on timing, your parts could be re-routed to me on Deer Isle for you.

  11. are you sailing up the Connecticut River? i saw in the beginning of the video it looks like Hartford was pin-pointed so i'm curious if you're headed that way?

  12. Our boat was trapped in Maine due to border closures finally got it back to Lake Ontario this August but we missed all these beautiful anchorages due to time constraints. We will return to do it right! Thanks for the virtual cruise! Consider the boat show in ‘23😊

  13. If your steering gear does a slalom it could have to much gain. ie too much power. Could you reduce the amount of angle that the trim tab gets moved by the vane movement?

  14. How far up the Bay are you planning on sailing? I am on Islesboro, so if you sail North, I am up by Turtle Head on the West side on Turtle Cove. I will look for you. If you have any land needs, I will gladly assist. Respond to comment if so, if not be safe and have a great sail. (You might be long gone by time of post)

  15. I went your route and installed a small, in my case 6hp longshaft on my double ender. The diesel starter packed it in and waiting for a replacement but have to make a haulout date. Works well. Gets me going at above 3 knots, 10 tonne boat..not bad.
Nice to see you out there again

  16. I really like the flying anchor set when needed. I sometimes lead the rode outside the lines to the cockpit and toss the anchor from there, and then head to the bow to cleat off the rode when the anchor bites and brings the bow around. I do need to install a bow roller and keep the anchor up there instead of the lazarette.

  17. Something always breaking and it's never a good time. Our camper's fridge stopped working two days into a four day ferry ride. That was bad timing but just a bad connection. Hope you get it all worked out. Thanks for the video. I hope to sail to Maine one of there days and your videos are a big help.

  18. You could always have stuff shipped to a ups store in whichever area you are. If you can find one near a marina that’s convenient. They only charge six bucks for the service and they’ll hold it for three days. I do this all the time in trucking.
