  1. When you watch your own videos you will notice the camera doing lots of panning. Kind of makes me dizzy. I was looking for a slo-mo setting. I will enjoy seeing your progress on bringing back this good old boat.

  2. Glad to see you got to drive cat to a new location. Someday we'll see you sail her. I'm sure you will solve your current issues and begin to enjoy the journey. For some of the projects. The windlass having no remote…. It would seem the cockpit control switch either (a) sends power directly to the windlass (lots of amps going thru switch) or (b) controls a relay that when energized sends the high amps to the windlass. I suspect the situation is (b) and the relay is close to the windlass. If true, you could find an alternative 12v circuit near the windlass to power the low draw side of the relay, hook up a wired or wireless remote to relay and have person on bow control the windlass. Solar Power…. It seems you and your family will drawing a lot of power and may need more solar panels. For a unique method of adding more panels to your current dinghy davit see fellow YT Sailing Life Athena from 6 mths ago. Design stacks panels on top of each other and lower panels slid/pulled out when at anchor.

  3. I had a similar fuel problem. At the end of a very long and tiring day I pumped some regular gasoline into the tank of our diesel pusher. A few miles down the road it stopped. We found a guy who could help us. He came with several 55 gallon drums and pumped all the contaminated mixture of gas and diesel into the drums took it away and then came back with some fresh diesel and put it in our tank. He didn’t really charge us that much, and I asked him what he was going to do with the contaminated fuel. His eyes lit up and he said that he had converted his furnace to burn this diesel gas mixture and he depends on people like me screwing things up during the summer so his family can be warm in the winter. Glad we could help.

  5. I finally got back to following YouTube channels and found you with a new to you boat! Congratulations on the purchase and finding a boat that better suits your needs. Hopefully by now you have a working refrigeration system but if not here are a few things to consider based upon my experiences with many air conditioning systems:

    – If you are getting partial cooling the odds are the refrigerant level is outside the operating range due to a leak or not having been properly charged including overcharging. A check with an appropriate set of gauges should determine the cause but see below for replacement refrigerant and gauges. If the system is dry, no refrigerant pressure, the leak must be located and plugged and the system evacuated with a pump before introducing new refrigerant.
    – Be aware there are two configurations for small boat refrigeration: standalone and water cooled. If airflow or water flow are impeded that will have a major impact on operating efficiency.
    – Check the nameplate on the compressor to determine the type of refrigerant. If it's R22 you are fighting a losing battle because manufacture of that refrigerant has been outlawed due to its impact on the ozone layer. The only R22 still available has been recovered from decommissioned systems and may or may not have been "reconditioned" to remove water & other impurities. There are so called drop in replacements such as R422 but they are 15% or more less efficient than R22, an important consideration the closer you get to the equator. Many replacement refrigerants require the system to be chemically flushed and evacuated before introduction of new. Some replacement say they can be mixed with R22 but the outcome is never optimum. Gauge sets calibrated for R-22 can be difficult to find locally.
    – If the nameplate says R134 you are in luck because that is the refrigerant used in automobile air conditioning systems. It's available from most auto parts stores along with the gauge set needed to diagnose the system and introduce more refrigerant.
    – Most other refrigerants you may encounter, Rxxx, should be available but difficult to find in remote locations along with a properly calibrated gauge set and fittings.
    – There is a company called cruiserowater that showed their replacement refrigeration systems and components at the Annapolis Boat Show last year. They can work with you to determine needed replacement parts, procedures and shipping.

Don't beat yourself up about getting the wrong gas, it can happen to the best of us, and with all that is on your and Lorens' minds right now, crap can happen. That's a mild thing to happen if you think about everything else out there! Roll with it guys, and good luck with everything else falling into place. Y'all got this!

  9. Had a similar situation with fuel mix up years ago. The good news is your outboard is fixable. The bad news is it is going to need new rings and head gasket minimum. It is not a hard job and can be done with some basic tools. Not the end of the world.

BTW… you are living the cruising life all the time whether it be in an anchorage or on the hard working on the boat(s), or cruising to an anchorage to see friends. With that said I have smoke coming out of my ears here on the hard in Mexico doing a bunch of small jobs – can't imagine having two boats and a dinghy motor to deal with all at the same time. It will all be worth it soon.

  13. YOU ARE YOUR OWN WORST ENEMY. DRAIN THE DEISEL OUT OF OUTBOARD, IT WON'T HURT ANYTHING. REFILL WITH GAS, AND TRY TO START ENGINE. THEN DEAL WITH WATER IN OIL AS A SEPARATE ISSUE. STOP WINING AND START PAYING ATTENTION.

  14. I JUST WANT TO SAY I BELIEVE YOUR NEW BOAT IS AS YOU SAID IS AN EXCELLENT WELL BUILT STRONG PLATFORM. AS AN ENGINEER I AGREE, AND IT IS ALSO BEAUTIFUL. AND IF TURNS OUT YOU END UP NEEDING A NEW OB, I'VE READ THAT THE NEW SUZUKI IS VERY QUIET, STRONG AND PRICED RIGHT.

  15. I can only suggest to get Makrolon Windows or Glass. Don't take any other stuff. I'm a naval architect in the superyacht industry. We're using Makrolon sometimes for railings as it's most UV and scratch resistant. To me glass is the best option even for light or small boats as changing the windows is a pain in the behind. It's either expensive or a hassle to cut the sealing. If you want to keep the boat some time think about glass. Safety glass with marine grade of course. The additional weight shouldn't create a stability or weight problem. It might be a hundred kilos extra.

  16. Carriacou! Great! (Can you get block ice? Sometimes local fisher folks have a source. Other option is to have a local freeze water bottles tubs etc and sell back to you. Every small boat without refrigeration lives with an “icebox”…they can attest to how much longer solid ice lasts…

  19. Watch Sailing Parley. They actually poured water into their dingy motor twice by accident and had to clean their motor. Perhaps there is something in that video that'll be helpful for you.

  23. As for the engine, I would replace the plug, and oil. Run it at pretty high revs for a good 30 minutes, and check the oil. It is probably related to the wrong fuel.

    As for the fridge there is only a few things that can be wrong and if possible start from the easiest first. Try adding refrigerant if you can get it. If you can get gauges then I suspect someone out here could walk you through all the other things.

  24. Hey Dude. Have you tried just changing the oil on the dinghy motor and just running it? The water may be from something else. As long as you flush every thing in your fuel line with petrol, you should be good.( I'm assuming its a 4 stroke motor.)
