BAT LIFE: SECRETUL MURDAR cu care ne luptăm cu toții | Porturi necunoscute Ep. 79 Suntem în croazieră de 16 luni și ne face mândri să știm că ne generăm propria energie și ne facem propria apă și, atâta timp cât furnizăm suficientă hrană, ne putem lua acasă atât de multe locuri și putem experimenta frumusețea planeta noastră uimitoare în propriile noastre condiții. Astăzi vă împărtășim cum trăim în afara rețelei pe catamaranul nostru cu vele, cum își trăiesc viețile unii oameni pe care îi întâlnim în locuri îndepărtate precum Kuna Yala și secretul murdar cu care ne luptăm cu toții. Răsărim odată cu soarele și ne admirăm vederea la malul mării din confortul patului nostru înainte de a ne începe ziua. Verificăm bateriile pentru a lua o decizie foarte importantă – cum vom face cafea, fierbător electric sau gaz. Cu doar 52% puterea bateriei, este gaz. Avem aproximativ 45 de litri de apă, așa că vom face apă astăzi și vom spăla niște haine. Unul dintre vecinii noștri Kuna navighează în cayuco-ul său, o pirogă, exact când mergem afară. Fiecare dimineață în afara rețelei începe așa. Pentru a ne alimenta stilul de viață, avem 1060 de wați solare, baterii cu litiu de 720 de amperi oră, un generator Fischer Panda 10000i și un alternator de 120 de amperi pe fiecare motor. Barca noastră are acum 2 ani și jumătate și aceste articole au fost achiziționate mai devreme. Tehnologia cu litiu și solar a evoluat enorm de atunci și majoritatea oamenilor cu care am vorbit au mult mai mult solar și litiu la bord. In an off-topic question, I was wondering how many LPG tanks you have on board, and if you've had to keep a variety of them with different filling nozzles, for when you refill them.

Wow, SO off grid! Scary to think that even though you can fish and catch food from the sea, you really do need others to help with more necessary foods that help mitigate scurvy and help keep you healthy. And the wonderful thing is that people everywhere are so keen to help and can make a good clean living helping others. Such symbiotic relationships everywhere. It's is great to see you supporting all these islanders, and taking care of their environment too! Congrats to you for doing that. If you could keep a small shredder on board you could compact all the wast down till you get to the next harbour or town and then recycle the plastics, But I understand that this is costly and would weight down the boat, so it's not practical. On the bright side there is now a move to clean up the plastics in the Pacific Ocean, so hopefully in a few years the amount of washed up plastics will reduce significantly.
I'll keep you in my prayers and thoughts and I wish you sailing free of drama.

You’ve certainly found close to a tropical paradise there , Fresh fish and locally growing fruit and veg , topped up by the floating green grocers , I totally love the idea of the boat delivering your veggies . The plastic problem is alarming , even though we try to recycle as much as possible these days , I suspect much of the damage from discarded plastic is already done 😢. I don't know why the islands are not doing this, It would be a solution to waste and a new market for them. The raw materials come in from the ocean as waste and they can convert it into fuel they can sell. Plastic, plastic, plastic. As you become more aware of our spirituality and connection as humans with our beautiful planet, is imposible ignore this issue. I don’t know with could be the solution either, but collect some human garbage (the only one) for sure make you fell a little better. Very thanks for that message. Every small action count. Garbage is a huge problem, not just in remote islands but world wide. We cannot blame the companies who produce the packaging, the biggest problem are people and their shitty attitudes like the world owes them and they can do whatever they want. Land based garbage is even worse than ocean based garbage. Only by creating garbage awareness in marinas and harbours, can we hope to reduce ocean garbage…..enjoy your sailing adventures, wish I could afford a boat as well.
The only way to combat that polution is to reward the collection of it.
If a company is willing to setup recycling infrastructure in the area, and literally put at a call to arms saying they will reward for any plastics handed in to their "weighing centre", maybe even a boat that goes around. The locals would quickl;y find all the plastic and hand it in, and not throw it in the first place, just directly turn it in to this model.
Not sure% what mechanism of recycling, and what the finances look like, but surely, if the raw materials already exist, it has to be cheaper than producing new plastics from oil, and if it isn't, it should be made so.
Your best episode so far…… Re: Plastic waste: what amazes me is that the solution is not technology but actually pretty simple…. In many Nordic countries, you take your empty bottles back to the shop and they pay you a little for it which comes off your grocery bill….. imagine expanding this out a little to pay these people for the plastic they bring back…. and then expanding it a bit more to legislate the producers to force them to take the same amount of waste back as they produce… OF course they will not do it for free and ultimately the consumers will pay but that's not a bad thing to change our behaviour. I really don't believe that these complex cleanup machines are the answer other than a one off attempt to clean the ocean.

Sailing One Life is only channel pointing to the long term solution. They visited the FIRST and only recycling facility in Caribbean (at the time at least) for their grand opening. SOL also worked in the facility for a day celebrating it’s grand opening. Until there are recycling facilities and islander education on all or most of these islands throughout the world, nothing will change. Asking big business to not supply water and other beverages to people who need it would take world progress backwards. Grass roots efforts to create a recycling infrastructure and the right attitude with LOCALS as well as tourists is the only way. There is a small outfit that has created 3D printers using trash plastic as medium for creation. They will be placing them Delos and Uma in near future.
