Ah, to be young again. Lost the rig on a Lazy E in similar conditions, fortunately with a lee shore. We were able to swim the boat onto a beach right next to a car park!
The worst part was the 3 mile walk to get the car.
Slept well that night, but it was our last time out in conditions like that, alone. If we'd lost the rig a mile earlier,
we would have ended up on reef, staring up at a vertical cliff face. That would not have been good.
Hardly gale force old boy. Maybe 25kts.
World-class skill from the helm and the crew. Focus, coordination, courage, and raw competence. Then the morons in the Mommy Boat ram them. When it's inevitable, the crew still works to sail the boat.
