  1. Chapman's piloting actually recommends putting oil in the water when attempting a rescue in choppy seas. I couldn't believe it when I read it. I carry pig mats for oil spills. The coast guard love to see them.

  2. Crude oil naturally seep out the sea floor in the Gulf of Mexico, in swaps, lakes, etc. all long the Gulf Coast. You didn’t purposely dump it over board, they also make a water friend vegetable oil based hydraulic oil too.

  3. Your advice is very good as in 'do not leave any important job to just go and do anything else', from experience as a marine engineer, it's too easy to forget about the job that could be going wrong if unattended.
Really appreciate your honesty about a situation you clearly regret, want to prevent happening again and want to help others in understanding how not to make the same mistake.

  4. SS Rube Goldberg Project. Estimate of how much was spilled, and submit some kind of report to the waterway authority with a possible fine?

  5. Ihave found that kitty litter will soak up oil very well …..I had spill in my garage I put out some kitty litter waited a will and it soaked up all the oil and left the gsarage like new you could not tell were the oil had been ……..and it is cheaper than the flour dry that is sold for shop use …..LOVE YOUR SHOW ….FROM ALBERTA CANADA

  6. I'm not sure how practical it would be for you, but you can get vegetable based (biodegradable) hydraulic fluids. These are required for some applications where leaks are likely near rivers or lakes. They are commonly required, for example, in log handling equipment operating in or near water sorting operations. Pop a hose on your log handler and dump 80L of Canola into the river? Oh well. Maybe not even reportable. Do the same with mineral fluid – major incident, fines, environmental remediation and all that.

  7. I keep a short stack of the Oil Pads on my boat. You can also pick them up at most truck, plumbing shops too. Some people use diapers in a pinch.

  8. How do I get ahold of you? I work for a hose company.. I have some equipment I want to send you. For starters I have a hydraulic hose saw…and blades to help that kick back lol. Please respond. I really have a gold mine of stuff that will benefit you.

  9. There are biodegradable hydraulic oils that are starting to be seen on the market. I recently heard about them being used on a gold dredge, to help minimize impact from a spill. It is more expensive but easier clean up, and no worry if it enters the water in small amounts.

  10. Not that I know anything about what I am talking about lol. Do you use any biodegradables hydraulic oil? I see they are available.

  11. A person employed by public funds can and will be video recorded. Flex your rights and keep the cameras rolling. Unless your in international waters. They just don't want transparency. Policy is NOT law.

  12. Sorry for your accidentm but good to put up this video. Recommend against images identifying officers and agents in the current climate – criminals and terrorists have been engaged in personal reprisals and intimidation.

  13. Doug I know it would be a pricey transition but biodegradable hydraulic oil may be something to look into. Would greatly mitigate any cleanup needed.

  14. Rope fusing tip: If you tape a section of rope with electrical tape, then cut through it. You can burn that end. It will leave you rope very clean looking. Just a tip from my old fishing captain.

  15. 3M makes a spill kit #PSKFL31. It has 2 50' rolls, 30 pads, disposal bags and 20 gallon drum. We send one of these kits out with our boats and any equipment that uses hydraulics. They are for emergency use only. We put a seal to show if the unit has been opened. Having these kits has made what could have been a big deal, into a cleanup and a report. I think Pig has a similar kit, if you prefer them.

  16. Doug, your honesty is incredibly refreshing, as is your attitude in general. Thank you for making these videos, and for all the positivity you put into the world.

  17. It must have been the officers you were approached by. I make it a point to record anyone who enters my boat. I've had some lippage but not much more. They are no different than any other cop entering your property. If you have nothing to hide, why are you worried about the cameras?

Good tip with the vests,. I didnt know the old school ones still were legal if not worn. I will order a set as back up.

  18. From one Oklahoma boat captain to another.. thank you.

Your intro was great, sir. 👍🏻👍🏻

Accepting responsibility is what a captain does.

You rectified the situation, and taught others from your lessons learned.

Those are all signs of a very captain.

    Much respect.

  19. The grey spill pads are for soaking up coolant and oil and they will get saturated with water. The white ones only suck up oil and don’t get saturated with water. White ones are the best for oil only, highly suggest getting while ones

  20. could put the Hull # over the door to the pilot house, like it's a house #

for your oil spill.. the floating pads are a great idea.. you can also get something like kite string , tie a number of the mats to the string and then you can "corral" it like an oilboom if it's just barely a sheen, you'll keep it contained and be able to get most of it cleaned up.
