  1. I should have known better…I thought "I'll just watch a minute of this and then come back later when I have more time"…BUT NOOOOOOO!!! (as John Belushi would say), I got sucked in and watched the whole thing all the way through! Another fascinating interview!

  2. Sincerely this is all I can say;Way over forty years ago I was assign to a U.S. Coast Guard Cutter that was very busy rescuing Cuban and Haitian refugees. Years later I am a High School teacher and living the double life of a bass player, so I have a lot of students who were children and grandchildren of the the people who came over then. Since, I've learned and loved Afro-Cuban, even took a course with the great Lincoln Goines and met manny time with the late and great Bobby Rodriguez. Luis Conte is a big part of this story and music.

  3. A lot came to mind as you two shared the background and experiences and I wanted to address it all in a long note. But the perfect message came about time 34:00 > “What a blessing, man…”

Thank you and Luis and all your compadres for sharing The Blessing and bringing us The Joy!

  4. Hello lee. This is amazing. Hearing how life was for Luis in Cuba. Very interesting.
How he recalls hearing that massively cool riff from the O’Jays.
I didn’t know that song was such a big game changer in the music world at that time.
I love hearing stories from Luis but your stories take the cake lee. I’m getting to know you a bit better every time you do an interview with another great artist.
This was really informative. Luis is a cool cat. Thank you so much.
    Greetings 🫶🏻

  5. What a great conversation! And thanks, to both of you, for letting us sit with you guys and listen in.
    Slava Ukraini!🇺🇦
    Stay safe and stay well!

  6. That was great! Thanks for sharing. My husband went to school near that supermarket at Belmont High School. It's funny how paths may have crossed. Take care & have fun.

  7. Brilliant, Lee – you are an exquisite interviewer and seriously think you should pitch a rock interview/backstories show to Sirius radio. Luis Conte is another legend so worth hearing about and from. This was great! I had the joy of seeing Ibrahim Ferrer and other members of the Bueno Vista SC perform live in Boulder in the late 90s – sooooo good – it was just after the film was released.

  8. Dino Danelli – Drummer for The Rascals passed away yesterday at the age of 78. Loved his flash & style. King of cool – RIP Dino 🥁😥

  9. We lost a couple from the music industry this week. Dino Danelli from the Rascals has died at 78. he was a founding member. I loved the Rascals. And the first concert I ever went to was Savoy Brown at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernandino, CA 1971. Kim Simmonds dead at 75.

  10. 👍👍. Representing for the commuter types! 2 1/2 hours one way today, which is why it has taken us so long to watch this.
Will have to re-watch with an audio booster for the phone to hear portions that were low for us, but fascinating interview. Believe the two of you could have used the old acting expression (& technique) "fake it til you make it" around 33m in. In the words of the Hues Corporation, "Rock on with your bad self"/selves!

  11. What a fantastic interview omigoodness! 💖 Thank you Leland and Luis! 💖 That Hues Corporation song is full on playing through my mind now, already animating me like a miracle.💕 Just the conversation about the rhythm , arched the spark❣️ Blows my mind every time it happens! 😃

  12. You mentioned in your fascinating interview with Mr Luis Conte Mr Sklar , that you were referred to as the man behind the shroud of Turin ,when being teased by Mr James Taylor ! I personally think that you and Mr Jerry Garcia when younger ,looked very alike in facial features , especially with glasses and beards …. Please ,no offence meant … Did anyone ever confuse you both …?

  13. Arturo Sandoval gig. Big dancing then, halfway in, he jumps on the piano, slows it down and brings up his tambourine player. His tambourine work was unbelievable, just glorious rhythmic changes and groove and Arturo just groovin' behind him on piano. A special moment!

  14. It's not enough that we get to see your life in this little YouTubeVerse, but the best part is the introduction you've given us to all these cool cats you've worked with over the years. Life is all about the stories.

  15. Fantastic conversation! Luis is a sharp interesting cat! Your mutual exchanges and history is great! Really casual, warm and enlightening. Wonderful stuff! Good friends are worth everything! Thanks!

  16. 👍👍. Even better with audio boost! Let's hear it for grandmas! Sounds like Mr. Conte would have had an extremely successful career as a union grocery store manager if he hadn't become a world famous musician….. "There's more than one way home…."

  17. Love, love, love this. All of these back stories and personal experiences. You're recording music history every day. This was really special eavesdropping on a personal conversation with two working musicians we have listened to on records for years. Only someone with your history and experiences can do this correctly. Thanks for letting us have a peek behind the curtain and gain a new appreciation for all the people who have made the music of our lives. More please!
