  1. Great progress with the foredeck. The modifications make sense to accommodate an anchor cheat, plenty of room for a backing plate. The sail design teaser continues, looking forward to that one.

  2. Again another most interesting video. Thank you

I wanted to als you (already after your last video): what happens to the white fibreglass lamination at the front of your boat. Was there an accident ?

  3. Early summer completion (2025?) Everything always takes MUCH longer than anticipated and that's perfectly ok. The boat Salt and Tar built was supposed to take 2 years and took 7. The house I built was supposed to take 2 years and took 8.

Regardless, I'm enjoying your process and progress.

  4. I'm really enjoying your solid construction method. I have always believed that construction overkill is a positive for your rugged needs out in the ocean and Wave Rover will be a "Sherman Tank" on the water. Great job and thank you for your interesting videos.

  5. The Chief lug (junk sail) has the following disadvantages:
1.) It's heavy, because of all the boomlets (battens). It is also heavy because the mast usually has no shrouds or stays supporting it.
2.) It is usually flat-setting, meaning there is little or no fore and aft curve in the sail. This gives it lower performance, especially upwind.

    Now for the advantages:

1.) It requires little or no specialized hardware, such as goose-necks, boom jaws, or boom vangs.
2.) It is extremely easy to reef. Just relieve the halyard and the lower boomlets stack up. Because reefing is so easy, one is far less likely to delay doing it.

Because most long small sailboat voyages are predominantly down wind, the lower upwind performance is not as important.

There are probably more reasons to use this rig for this purpose than there are not to.

  6. Another terrific video. A question: on the starboard topside just aft of the bow and at the stern end on the same side, there seems to be areas where the fiberglass has been damaged and one can see the wood. Can you please edify us as to what happened? Thank you.

  7. First, I would like to say that you are right about the Junk Rig. From cost, performance, ease of handling, ease of reefing and ease of repair, it is probably the best rig for the job. A panel between two battens might be totally gone and the sail still be usable. It has a lot to offer, especially to a solo sailor. Still, I would also consider a mainsail with a wishbone. It’s a more modern design while still being very easy and safe to use. I think it would offer many of the advantages of the Junk Rig with better performance whenever the wind is ahead of the beam. But then, gentlemen are not supposed to sail to the wind.

  8. In southern New Hampshire, a winter storm is now dropping snow. It was raining earlier in the night. The trees have snow sticking to all of the branches. But so far, no appreciable wind as in your video. But it is expected later.

Your recording date was on what would have been my father's 97th birthday. He was a carpenter/cabinet maker. Watching you work and explain what you are doing brings back fond memories of helping my father while growing up.

  9. And a Merry Christmas to you too! And don't be so frenetic about condensation. In large, it will not happen in an insulated (wooden) boat. What you are building now is not a dripping wet Contessa.

  10. Hello Alan😁that wind sounds crazy out there. Like sound effects to a movie💯as I watch this , I think the wind moved here as I have similar sounds going on. A super storm along with your video! Anyways , hope all is well with you and Mrs Rover!!🙏 She seems to be coming along as planned! A good thing😁 thanks again for taking us along👍stay safe and healthy 🙏 Happy Holidays if we don't see you before Christmas ⛄🎄

  11. Good progress.. great to see her starting to get closed in.. you get a good sense of the spaces and access once the decks go on.
I don't envy you those temperatures! I helped a friend build a somewhat similar 30 foot ply yacht (Hartley "All Straight" design) a few decades ago, and I am glad that he wasn't having to worry about temperature as well as everything else!
He sailed that boat from New Zealand to Phuket in Thailand, and it performed well.
Best wishes for Christmas from a summery New Zealand.

  12. Steven is very good at camera handling. It’s so annoying when the camera isn’t showing what the voice is commenting. Here the speaker and the cameraman look like they’re the same person. Nice job

  13. Alan, you could float your vessel in my swimming pool. Literally. It melts my brain that you intend to circumnavigate the globe with her! I enjoyed the wind howling in the background while watching your video next to the fire. Crack on!

  14. Looks really strong, I’m keen to see how your going to access the foredeck for anchor handling. Re Junk Rig, have been reading a lot about the rig, ideal with the Wave Rover. I’m a convert for sure, ease of handling, reefing & with some camber built into the sail should be a perfect fit for your boat. Enjoying your vids, all the best for Christmas, cheers.
