Good stuff
Great content!! Great info and comparisons! Thank you both for massing it easy to understand!
A lot of cruisers keep cans of fuel on deck also water that is a lot of weight, way above the water line. This is because they are coastal cruisers do not have tanks big enough to cross oceans. I ken they do but one day there luck will run out. It is not blue water it is deep sea. Not popping over the channel, but not seeing land for days or weeks.
Don’t let James rub off on u
James is rubbing up..off.. on you, you're getting better looking Plucky! Oh and, l can tell James didn't do his so called editing magic, so .. top job Mate.
Really liked this, great info .. l have been trying to get some relativity to this myself lately. Thankyou.
Hey Plucky,
I can't find an Adams 42 on sail boat data, Aussie boat l think it may be like a HR, without the internal trim. I will do the figures now thanks to you Buddy!
I have a 1966 Allied Seawind and the numbers are great according to your #"s
Where's the black nail polish James? Black nails look so cool 😎
YESSS!
Hey what do you think of the Ingrid 38
Photoshop? Superimposed?
Great video. The pluckster is a great engineer and I love the collective experience. I have to say that when shopping for Catamarans I trust 9 out of 10 dentists and their opinions.
This is awesome! I'm searching and have met with friends who know sailboats. There are so many variables to consider about sailboats. Thank you.
O the Great Greek Captain Spongeoff 🙂 and James hahaha.
1. thanks for this
2. so glad i went to sailboatdata and followed along with my boat.
3. james, why did you sedate pluckey??
Another nice boat is the K Peterson 44/46. Great sailing boat seaworthy seakindly nice layout. Love the deck layout. Engine access. Put tens of thousands of miles on one.
Great video guys! Thanks!
Me insurance agent don't like me boat.
Seems ferror cement makes him cough&choke.
I don't think its "risk" cuz I've been rammed,
by a 3 person jetski w/ a big drunk man.
I think he coughs w/ glee you see
for charging a pound of flesh & making me bleed,
so when I'm done w/ my 40 ft cat
my insurance drops a thousand!
Whatcha think 'bout that?!
To accomplish the task I need a 36 ft hull,
got a racer in mind, no engine below the sole.
Tried to get an outboard to light&spin,
but I hate those *&$#@ers.
Sorry, my thin skin didn't mean to sin.
So I picked up a diesel, ways just a mere 50 lbs.
Half the price of an outboard&twice as easy to move around.
Got a Cadillac alternator for the front.
plus a kw of solar, 2kw of wind,
and trolling motors in the trunk.
I figure if one takes a vacation on me
the others will keep working& take me out to sea.
I know I'm paranoid cuz I hate inboards&
… outboards,
…but you gotta admit
redunant trolling motors
on 2 cutters sliced together
to create a big cat
that'll hopefully smile at weather,
…makes me only half of a retard.
I figure once I admit to my follisome need
I'll give her a good electric
&she may make 5 knots of speed.
I haven't got a rat's chance in hell of stepping on a boat, but I wanted more when the discussion was over. A sensible design is a balance of attributes where the series of compromises made result in a sum that is worth more than the total of the individual considerations. If I built a boat, sail displacement (power to weight ratio) could be variable? Why not have an excess of sail displacement in reserve that can be used when the boat is heavy? Good job keeping it simple for us novices, yet interesting. It will be -13C tomorrow. At least I can dream that I am somewhere else.
Perfect mix of experience, technical knowledge, and communication skills! Thanks for entertaining and educating us!
Captain Q on Youtube is pretty good at reviews.
I went from watching live yesterday to live today and delayed 6 hours. I love and respect you both. I found this very helpful!!!! Looking to buy my first boat in40 yrs. Grew up with sabots lasers and prindle cats. Highlights of my life.
Look at the intelligence coming out of this Aussie boy.
Go Plucky go
Go Aussie go
The Nathandrial Aussie ( PLUCKY) is clearly more intelligent than modern Australians
Guys that was interesting, thanks for sharing the stats
Has Lisa got competition ??
WOW . Gentlepeople that should be addedincluded in the RYA ocean syllabus. I have at 60 years of age and sailing all my life , put the mast head light underwater three times. I feel like writing to nigel calder and saying , you know what , you got to include that production in your next book, an online link or something. That was something else. Despite the fact that when the pair of you get within 50 metres of each other, both should be arrested and detained , you two have just produced , forrest gumped even, a seminal work. I look forward to even more from the two renegades .
Great info beautifully put thanks guys.
Really nice review! Angle of vanishing stability is another one that's worth looking at and probably(ish) a better measure of how the boat will come up after being rolled over. Capsize ratio isn't really about how it will come back up it's about how likely it would be to capsize in the first place (as Plucky said) – there's lots of very wide beamy racing boats that rely on form stability to prevent capsizing (and so have good capsize ratios), an extreme example of this is a catamaran – great capsize ratios and form stability but not coming back up if you do turn over.
Why is James drinking pickled onions ?
Comfort Ratio (CR) = Number of Pillows / Number of Pillows squared = Number of Bean Bags. Typical CR of 25, 10 pillows or 1 Bean Bag; CR 35, 20 pillows or 2 Bean Bags and so on.
60 ft to go over the waves , what do you say
Must be the missing Link, not there James
I have a hard time with mathematical formulas. I don't get the 2/3 calculation – how to apply it to the rest of the formula, for example. It's the math calculation. I understand LWL and displacement. But applying the figures in a formula is way hard. And the graphs – I couldn't tell what is a good boat or a bad boat without you telling me. Yet I do have a better understanding of what data must be looked at to determine boat characteristics thanks to the two of you. :¬) Webhead USA
Hi mate, thanks to you and James for this very interesting, informative and great video. I went on this sailboat site and lookup the data for a sailboat that I used to own and the data said it all. Being a light fast sailboat in a very heavy wind getting hit sideways by a wave, the mast was less that 4meter above the water…a very scary experience that showed the limit of that sailboat. One not to be repeated, finally I sold it. Keep those great videos coming, have a great one!
Thank you so much!
Hey gents, enjoyed watching while drinking coffee this morning. thought you said you were going to discuss overhangs and LWL relation – I’m curious how that effects numbers when on heel… any thoughts?
Plukki & James, you should have a close look at the Grand Soleil line of “long range” boats – performance, comfort and build quality combined. (In my humble opinion)
Great discussion guys, "quintessentially"a bit to often James😂 but plenty to think about. You in Greece yet Plucky?
Love it Guy's very informative as always. Thanks for all the indepth thought. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.
CR , the fatter you are, the more comfortable you are😊
On a more serious note, most of this is intuitive and highly unscientific, kind of reminds me of stock analysis.
Such mutual appreciation guys when are you getting wed? Only kidding. Great explanation thanks.
Great summary! I’d also add the GZ curve for stability for cruising safety? 👍
great info, i guess the painting is level sometimes lol
