Good stuff guys
Try the bernina 1020…. series. Awesome machine. Used In many schools and unbreakable and good to even do leather work. Many a canvas job done here.
Looks great…. Now paint the mast😂😂
It is really looking good warm and inviting great job
I used liquid silicone rubber and poured it around my mast in the aperture. Stays flexible and completely seals the H2O out. Used tape on the underside as the bottom of the mould. Then I installed the mast boot.
I’ve heard SINGER Heavy Duty 4452 Sewing Machine is a good machine for canvas work. They run around $200 in the US.
What I love about u guys is that u are just "pure". True to who u are. No show. No fuss. Just straight forward. I love your chanel. And I love you all.
Well done all of you huge difference to salon with Melissa's sewing skills looks great
When baby comes it will be harder to do those “nonessential jobs”. So crack on till your heart is content
You’ve really made a big difference in the whole feel of the boat with the salon and the great new cushions. They actually look custom made, they fit so perfectly. They make the whole room look so clean, light & cheery, you’re a lot better than “Sewish” in my opinion!
the issue of not sucking the last 1/4 inch may not be with the head of water it has to move, but with the air that gets sucked in and reducing the pump efficiency.
If you’re having problems with the air inside your vinyl cushion covers, you could cut a series of holes, small round quarter inch, in the two short ends of your cushions. If you’re worried that the vinyl Is not Strong enough to keep from tearing out Then you could put in eyelets for reinforcements. Once you have your holes, with or without eyelids, you could then attach some screen material from the inside to keep the creepy crawlies from getting in.
I love what you guys are doing is it doing a great job and apologize too much you’re already our heroes wishing your family well please take care of course I love the background music. you both are so serious Of course I wish I had a boat to work on too
You guys are inspirational. Everyone kicks in a helps.
You are so clever Melissa , the seats look lovely .
I will Unsubscribe today because of MID-ROLE ADS
More jobs done 👍, looking good. The cushions are great, practical too being vinyl.
What did you mount the bilge pump to? It looked like MDF but surely that’ll swell up then disintegrate 🤔. Great idea adding a bigger emergency pump with alarm, can’t be too careful!
The extension lead situation could be solved by running a cable under the floor, then up to sockets mounted on the table pedestal? You’re always going to have phones and devices (and sewing machines) on there 🤷
Finally, (sorry, lots to say 😂) I think your L/R audio might somehow be switched, certainly at the end? Andy talking in my left ear from the right side and vice versa.
… love to you all, have fun, be happy 😁.
Great job, guys. Andy, id recommend a reinforced hose for your pumps so there is no way it can collapse on bends, and it is more durable when placing items in the locker etc.
Get a dehumidifier and locate in main saloon, running til the humidity is below 40%. Works great.
Great sewing! You could wrap the foam in Dacron. Dacron is a polyester fibre that is most commonly used to produce the plump, rounded look in upholstery. It would finish the job and no need to do it again.,
I always carry a large capacity submersible bilge pump connected to a long electrical lead with alligator clips and a long discharge hose in a locker for emergencies. If you find water in the boat anywhere connect it to the closest battery, chuck the pump in the water and the discharge hose overboard. It’s a great backup to temperamental bilge pumps that you can easily deploy anywhere at night.
Well done Melissa, that's an instant and quite seasonably sensible improvement to the interior of the boat, it also seems to add so much more brightness to the area too
Andy will you be replacing that wooden platform in the bilge in the future as it looks like it will leave a half inch of water under the pump and I always believed the idea was to get the pump as close to the base as possible (please note, this is not a criticism as Im not a boat person and Im looking to be educated here)
Not over kill. Just rihgt the first time so your not loosing sleep or stresed when not aboard
The Saloon now looks fancy with the white cushions next to the brown wood…
You can buy from eBay a very inexpensive walking foot attachment to put on that sewing machine . That will help with feeding heavier cloth. We managed to make new sprayhood, sail and hatch covers and cockpit cushions with a sewing machine very similar to yours with a walking foot attachment. For the heavier stuff you need an industrial sewing machine with at least a 1/2 hp motor. Such a beast will handle mulitple layers of sailcloth up to 10mm thick – as I discovered 2 weeks ago mending the head of my blade jib..
What was that at the base of the stairway at 12:12 looked like a rat ,it moved watching Andy?
This reminds me of quilting in our 5th wheel. Love it
Thank you so much again for one more entertaining episode.
Could it be that any of the return valves is a bit stuck so it is hard for the water to come through, since it was so slow flow out?
Try a needle for leather on your sewing machine. It may not labor as much with that needle. My wife uses that trick for canvas and sail material.
Good job Andy. Two things to watch. With the outlet on the topsides you will need a gate valve near the outlet. When you are sailing and heel over the outlet will often be below the waterline and the pump below that. With wave action there will be a lot of back pressure on the pipe. The valve will enable you to close it should the pipe be burst (which why you should use reinforced pipe) or pushed off. .You can’t rely on the check valve to stop the boat filling up.
For the high volume pump don’t direct it over the side but into the cockpit (which has drains) or a point along the centerline where the outlet should never get submerged. Larger pipe size means lots more water being ‘pumped‘ in by the sea. Reconsider whether you want a check valve on the large pump as its essential task is to move as much water was possible which a check valve will restrict.
At the risk of adding an obvious comment, when sewing aircraft windshield covers and external boat cushions: I find the key is
1. Selection of proper fabric- sunbrella, etc
2. Use heavy needles
3. Use heavy thread, stitching!
4. Lubricate properly!
I also clean out dust, old thread from mechanical parts of mechanism. I find household machines have difficulty in moving heavy fabric -I need to lightly “ pull/push” !!!
thx for bringing us along 😊😊😊 Ken
hello ! Nice result for the assortment of cushions!
Good trick for the "adjustment" pump height!
Are you recording in stereo? Anyway, the talk at the end had the sound reversed for the speaker.
The saloon seats look amazing, such a massive improvement well done.
Good job Melissa x
Wow the cushions look fantastic! Great job 🎉
What is the area behind the settees? Will you coordinate with the cushions?
Believe me. We know it’s not a learning channel. Comedy at times.
Very Nice Job, Melissa!
Have a look at salt and tar in the early days for making cushions.
Having a good seat is pretty essential I think, so you do essential work ;-). Its fun seeing the work go from grinding steel and welding to installing a bilge pump and getting the interior better. Love to see you doing work on this ship
With every episode I become a bigger fan!! lol. You folks are awesome and thank you for such great explanations of your process–we are going through the same pains of restorations and simple upkeep that a precious floating homes needs. Thank you for another awesome video-enjoy them a ton!
