  1. I bet you two will splash and make the crossing. From the looks of it, it seems only certain areas failed, which could mean the rudder can be rebuilt right where it is. Hopefully. For the record I seriously know squat about sailing or components on a sailboat. But that rudder 'seems' to be fine other than a couple areas. May it failed due to dust no one saw that got caught between the foam and glass work?

  2. a little bit of detail for you = 1 December 2021, at 7:33am Mexico’s shrimp farming sector looks set to harvest a total of 177,000 tonnes by the end of the year – which would be a 3.7 percent increase on 2020’s figures

  3. What i dont understand is why do you guys go for a new GRP Rudder rather than putting something back that is far stronger ? After all if you built a Stainless Rudder, you would not have any further worries ?

  4. Have you eliminated the possibility that the rudder is flexing/curving to starbd under heavy load, due to loss of strength of the internal steel framework? That could have the effect of putting the starbd skin under compression, causing it to pull away from the foam in the areas seen.

  5. It some how had moisture in there when you hauled the Sun hit that black bottom paint which then makes it steam up and create pressure and makes if buldge. Rubber membrane roofs do the same thing just make sure its good and dry and glass it up with epoxy and good cloth.

  6. Read up on vapor pressure. You are lucky that the interior is dry. The most important thing to examine is the bonding of the blade to the metal spine (armature). The rudder doesn’t have to look beautiful, in just has to be one solid piece.

  7. I imagine the water was sitting there under the lamination and was brought to a boil in the sun causing the expansion. Good thing you caught it on the hard. I imagine we will find out more in future episodes.

  8. My guess is the delamination started from moisture weeping in and flexing the rudder, I would say make sure to allow the foam to dry completely before re-glassing it, but I’m sure the job is finished and this is on a delay. You guys are both very competent and capable, I’m sure you’re way ahead on this.

  9. I love that you guys, show the maintenance side. For those of us that have not sailed but dream about it, have many questions.
How to get your boat into a marinna for repairs. When you travel to different countries, do you have trouble sourcing paint and fiberglass. Lot's of things like that are really interesting for those of us that have never sailed.

Anyway thanks for showing some of the unglamorous side of boating

  10. Fellow Sea of Cortez sailer here. Because the summer sun in the Sea is HORRIBLY HOT, when when we hauled out last May I wrapped my ruder with White Tyvek house paper to keep the sun from baking it (from the sun angle in your vids, it looks like this could be your problem, The sun appears to be on the side of the Rudder that the damage / delamination occurred ;-). It's fixable! ….We are on sv Star Hunter currently on the hard in San Carlos. Hope to see you out there! …Fair Winds & Following Seas to the south Pacific! 🌴🌴

  11. So sorry for your problems, but better now than 1000 miles off shore. I know you will get it all put together and your trip can continue. And now I'm finally caught up and can stay current. You guys are inspirations. I am landlocked in Colorado so you're helping me with my life on the water dreams 😁

  12. You'll get er done…
Suggestion, next time you haul out, or if you are still on the hard, replace those stainless shaft strut bolts with frp bolts. No worries then with galvanic action eating away dissimilar metals, frp bolts will last forever.

  13. So happy to see the Petit bottom paint worked so well. I literally just painted the bottom of my boat with the same. I also thought I had a rudder delam issue, but it's fine, just have to patch a hole I drilled in it. Keep at it, you will be back in the water in no time.

  14. Oh I remember the early days, and the elephant I was just sitting down to eat… Not to mix metaphors, but you got to just keep swimming and it'll all be finished before you know it and you'll be sitting in an anchorage waiting, in 40° weather and rain on your head, waiting for the stupid ocean to cooperate so you can head south…. Wait a second; that's me.
