  1. Oh my, what a dilemma you kids are in and I would not have to choose to make this decision! Thinking back on how much you paid for UMA, all of the "improvements" you have made to her AND just how far she has taken you, perhaps it is time to find somewhere there to take her off your hands and sail her in calmer conditions! Then, as someone mentioned before, look for a boat more suitable for the uses you intend for your future travels. Kind of a "fixer-upper" again, but with the hull and rigging designed for "heavy duty" sailing! Just this old farts "two cents" worth! I know you will make the correct decision! Love to you Both!

  2. As heartbreaking as it may be for you guys after all the beautiful work you've done, it's time to let someone else enjoy Uma, for coastal cruising. Get yourself a Bluewater boat and go around the world.

  3. Instead of working with a formal shipyard, try going to a workmans tavern near a large shipyard and letting it be known that you are looking for people to help with a boat project. There is probably a bunch of fellows who would like a side job. The word would go out and you could find someone from any trade needed. Find a small yard to pull out at. See if you can rent a trailer and live onsite as "security guards".

  4. See you in Leros in May then? We can have a classic-plastic yard workshop together! We are changing our rigging, thru-hulls and plumbing 🤙 Going Sicily -> Leros mid april 💦

  5. Hi guys, I am following you since the very beginning and I am sooooo attached to UMA 😉 I am a skipper living in Elba island (Toscany, center italy). I do a lot of work my self on my boat, so if you'r still thinking to to that massive work I can help getting in touch with some boatyard let you do the work by your self. Let me know. I love you, Luca

  6. Hi Dan & Kika you've done awesome job with Uma and she has served you well but like below maybe its time to look forward to a more Blue water boat like a center cockpit where Patrons or family can join you on crossings :))))))

  7. Imagine that you two can do with a clean canvas with the experience and knowledge you have now, compared to when you started. Me, for one, would love to see you start a new boatproject. Maybe start with something a little more sound from the get-go? 🙂

  8. You have skills and time, you can do it. I think it will be totally worth to do in your boat. Tens of years of extended life. And big boat renovation series always get lot of views on YouTube so it’s a win-win.

  9. You explained your situation succinctly. You both are architects, perhaps not yet marine architects, and I think you know in your minds and hearts, a newer, more solid deep blue cruiser is in your future. You would have more adventures ahead of you. More thrills for your fans. A better vessel for your dreams. You have your first boat so much love and care. Much respect.

  10. I'd first look at what your future plans and desires are. You've been pushing your luck and skill doing what you've done with Uma so far. If money wasn't a factor at all, what would you do? With your incredible abilities to see what could be for a refit or rebuild would you rather spend that time and money to still end up with limited capacities to accomplish your plans or put the efforts into something that will make your future plans a reality?
Not everyone wants to make room for more guests or increased family size, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. But you two are the ones who know what's in your hearts for the future. An added income stream for you would be possible by offering your expertise in recreating other people's boat interiors. I know which ever way you decide to go I'll still be watching!

  11. Electric caers are the thing now ! Electric Boats sRE rhe Future ! you two are architects , designrs1 I am certain some boat builder will pay you a fortune to help him design the best posible blue ocean boat , and you might even get a free boat for your trouble, you7 have rthe real nuts and bolts experience tosedign a great boat . Even I would be interested in buying one ! Contact some of the many companies you visiterd at the German Trade Fair and start calling them to find out if they might be interested ?????????????????
They mi8ght even call it rthe UMA ELECTRIC SENSATION ! While working on the project , you could sdtill keep usinng your UMA , and also as a source of inpiration while you design !
make your experience pay off BIG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will design the and use the best sailboat in the World , and it will be fully electric !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best of luckwith th-is proyect Camilo .

  12. It is a wonder to me how other channels (SLV, Ruby Rose) are building million dollar ships while Dan and Kika are performing miracles and Barry Perrins is getting his beat-up Perkins engine started with crazy glue.

  13. Hi, you know it is time to move on. Uma served you well, but she is old and tired, and one day she might not be able to protect you.
About the new boat. Please don't go for the perfect blue water cruiser, the one that has it all. Go for the one that has a soul, the one you have to adapt to. If you don't, your channel is at a serious risk of losing its appeal to people.

  14. You might need to ask yourself, is it mainly a matter of time you need to fix this problem or is it a problem you can't fix as you cant afford it.
In the first case i would assume it's doable, in the second case i would seriously think about to quit with this nice boat.

  15. Aside from everything else, you are accomplished filmmakers and playing defense can be dramatic in a crisis but soul-sucking over time. But you know all that. The saga of your next boat will be a content mother lode if you can swing it, even if the road is pretty rough.

  16. Life boils down to two main things, time and money. Like most of us you’ll probably never have the amount of money you want for the ultimate boat. You’re young, don’t squander your time doing endless expensive repairs on a 50 year old boat that is slowly failing and quite frankly is probably unsafe. The harsh reality is that your boat, even with all the modifications you’ve done and the work that needs to be done has a very low resale value. There are newer and better built boats out there, go find one and continue the adventure

  17. Ok. See what's required now. I see a repair in the middle. Not whole boat. Boom mast etc is regular stuff. 6knees. And of course they are bonded in and near other stuff. That's not just a tupperware standard as you have proven it otherwise. If you really would like to sail the boat you know, then get on and fix what's needed as at least you will know and feel what you have when finished. Say it's a lot of work then decide for sure. You can do that work in Ireland in a yard I know but as to weather then you may find somewhere that allows and is also warmer (for epoxies). Other option is hire in the repair, rent a boat for 6 months and keep sailing and channel income. Not familiar with your financials. As a live aboard and do all on a 49 years young wooden craft…I do understand the pain in decisions. And at the end of every awful frustrating and expensive job..I can usually say. That was worth doing!

  18. We have loved watching you live off the couch. I agree with most of the people below and it is time for a newer blue water boat. What about approaching that electric sailboat company to be your sponsors? You highlighted their sailboats and were excellent ambassadors for them. Just ideas from the east coast of Canada. Dave and Seely

  19. Please, don’t pussyfoot around this issue for drama purposes. You two have one of the best, most enjoyable and successful channels out there- people won’t desert you because Uma is just gone beyond her years. Get a new boat or buy a farm. All that work you describe makes no sense, as I’m sure you already know

  20. Both being safe is the most important thing Dan and Kika. Your boat isnt safe at this time. Being a 50yr old coastal boat needing such a monstrous task to put her right isn t worth the hard earned cash and effort. It's a major thing that needs doing.' Odd life Crafting' bought a large boat and spent 2 or more years putting new life into it. So maybe call it a day with the old girl and look for another that has a sound safe Hull. Just our thoughts here. Take care we love ur videos.

  21. Do it!!!! Classic plastic is awesome! Just strengthen bulkheads, chain plates, etc. When it's done you will have an awesome boat again. Classic plastic was way over built from the beginning, except for stronger chain plates, bulkheads, and standing rigging. You are almost there! Besides, everyone loves watching boat repairs more than hiking hills, etc., anyway! I say, go for it! And if you can find the correct place to do it over there while eating French bread, cheese, and drinking wine, what's not to love? Oh, and while your're at it, double the size of the cockpit drains!

  22. Ah what is possible in caribic isn't in Europe ..it will be very expensive in eu. It's massive job. All channels went to this point as u did .. it's time maybe go lvll up ..for smtin newer. Any ketch or blue water schooner. What is more RDY bring u close to Ur dreams and planes .
