Fascinating machines!
The saying "you nailed it" should be written new. "You Nialled it!" … sorry Niall 😉
It's like a view behind the Curtain. So deep into the stuff and so easy explained by Will. – Just fantastic Information. – Thanks a lott.
I did not know the foils are so much "tuned" during a race, I thought they are fixed… The reality of using them seems to be very complex!
That is so interesting! I really had no idea of how much goes into trimming the foils
Without french subtitles… no understand at all
Die beiden sind Klasse.
GREAT video! Much appreciated. Go Malizia!
Wooau Huge Thanks to all Malizzians spec. to Will Harris (the coolest crew member) and our insight reporter Niall Myant_Best. You have opened completely new perspective for mee in this short movie, I've seen / found many answers, how they succeed to reach boat speeds almost twice as wind. Fkn deep tech educational. Cockpit config & much more, what IMOCA 60 makes a Flying Beast propelled by 7 – 8 floor high engine Just from mainsail. OMG
🤔🤗🤯🤙
Math skills!! Math and sailing and trim skills … and keel. Holy Cow! Learning how to fly !
Very interesting! I learned a lot. Thanks! Additionally, I would appreciate if you could provide more of in-depth explanations. Really good.
I know scow bows get a lot of hate, but I think Malizia is beautiful when she's screaming along.
Another very interesting podcast. Some similarities in flying. Trim, degrees of flaps center of gravity wind angle turbulence rudder input factors etc. But on water. Interesting insight.
💯
Excellent show! Thanks to Niall and Will! Would love to see more like this 😁
God I could listen to Will explain the boat for days. Great questions <3
Amazing Video, thanks Team Malizia for the access! More of this would be great!
A great technical video on the usage and trimming of the foils. Hydrodynamics and aerodynamics are similar and dissimilar (the medium is non compressible in the former) but the use of and the science is very similar which was first introduced into yacht design by Ben Lexen (Australian designer of America’s Cup legend when USA lost the cup – the winged keel 👍💪).
We have had hydrofoil power boats for years and now through the development of carbon fibre fabrication a strong lightweight vessel can be designed to do crazy speeds greater than the true wind. I’m 75, knowing and thinking it’s great to get 6-6.5kts on a beat (over 7kts on a reach) in 12-15kts sailing my 40yr old Westerly Discus 33 cruiser, but to be doing these speeds is thinking in another dimension. Oh to be young again with this technology available 👍😀✔️👏⛵️⛵️
These crews are athletes, technicians, innovators, motivators, displaying tremendous leadership skills (individually and collectively) coupled with perfect CRM (crew resource management) interaction within the team who are then supported by a strong 💪 💪 shore based crew and loving family members 😍
Plus a great reporting team of OBRs, media personnel lead by Niall giving us a very informative coverage of the boats and the race. 👏👏🙏
💯👍
Great Lesson!
"It's like trimming another sail."
Please keep the lessons coming!
Great explanation, thanks guys!
That was Awesome! So technical but understandable. Thank you.
That was an excellent description of the foils and how to get the best out of them!
Very interesting and understandable for me. And I'm not a sailor… Thx
Will the next generation of IMOCA have adjustable foils on the rudder(s) like the new AC boats, or is that too much for a small crew to handle on a multi-day race?
Thank you for that show – again. We, my husband and I, love to watch from Germany. We also would be really interested in a report about all the onboard reporters: are they sailors, how do they deal with the situation especially if or when they become seasick…
Fascinating for a non sailor.. Thank you!
wow, i had a fundamental understanding of foils, however this made my understanding much better! Great job guys!
Apparently the boat is refitted again and ready to rumble! The complexity of these boats is stunning.
Looking forward to April 23rd!!! Will is handling the boat like he was born with it 😉
