"Dont spoil a good ship for sparing a ha'pney worth o' tar "
Rip out the f'csle bunk base !
Wasn’t it better to do this in like another country where there are diy friendly yards?
Great to see you guys starting the big overhaul. If in doubt….rip it out… right?
And thats why there is no such a thing as doing just one small thing with renovation … xD good start and good luck! =)
Thank you
You two are quite interesting when you get into your zone…one step at a time… enjoy your boat rehabilitation…get some of those little foamy ear plugs…protect your ears…eyes… and lungs working with resins…paints and dusts… and many plywoods contain formaldehyde…ventilate with a fan…I can be health and safety man… maybe…
You guys really need a ventilation system for your new bed. It's normal that moisture accumulates in/beneath the mattress as one sweats during sleep. Mold is harmful even if you don't show allergy symptoms. Best of luck with your project.
Re-subbing for the boat project!!!
Now , just where in the wide world of sailing the plastic polluted seas ! Dose one find a carnival queen they call keeco ? If I’m pronouncing correctly! She is quite a lil busy bee. Time to let this old floater go ..sink it ! You have insurance!!!! Go get a real vessel that thing is so 1980
And the fun begins
Well , good luck
First steps are the hardest! Then you build in those lovely new better more spacious feed back bits 👍🤞
Omg, Kika and the cushions! 😂❤😂❤😂
"Plywood's cheap"… not any more. But then as you also stated, anxiety over your boat failing needs to be dealt with. I'm looking forward to seeing how this mammoth reconstruction unfolds! Chin up, guys!!
How mucbh of a change to water level did removing allnthe stuff make?
Part of the joy to watch you, is how you have managed to turn a pretty worn out lady to become an almost explorer yacht. And particularly your creativity in terms of improving the whole vessel to accommodate you as a couple. A good friend of mine recently died. He was an architect like you, and relatively late in his professional life he won a major architectural competition. A public building that took many years to construct. Very advanced in terms of environmental specifications. When he finished, he decided to use all the money he had earned to design a sailing boat for circumnavigation. He was an experience sailor/racer and competed for many years in his X-79. In 1998 he contacted the Hansa Yard in Germany and together with an architect friend and the naval designer Judel/Vrolijk they made the Hansa DS 37. The vessel is now for sale in Norway. You should take a look. Had it not been for the fact that you have decided to go ahead with a renovation, I would have recommended you to seriously give it a consideration as a candidate for UMA II. Immaculately maintained where only the best will do. As we Norwegians are so used to due to the tough weather, rugged coastline and maritime heritage.
All so exciting! 😅💪🏼🙏🏼🥰
If people do facelifts, why not give a new freshener for your extraordinary pretty floating home, it's going to be so interesting to watch the evolution and that all falls into place! 😅❤😂
I was so glad you decided to keep UMA and not opt for something bigger, better, faster. UMA is such an integral part of the whole Dan and Kika story and this new build out will keep us intrigued for the next 4-6 months..
I love your travel videos, but you first had me at "boat work" when you first got Uma. Frankly, I'm excited to see these projects get done and will be impatiently waiting for each video to release. Wish I could do more like on Patreon, but student/ family life has my resources.
I looks like Uma is going on a diet after the refit.
It's amazing how much "stuff" you can amass living on a boat… and we only did it for a year.
time for a new boat?
WHAT EVER YOU ((do)), DON'T GET A NEWER BOAT , 😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
I have rebuilt my boat like you 10 years ago. Many layers of fibre glass… It's not difficult, but it's very painful because of toxic vapors of the resin polyester. Bon courage
So excited to see the rebuild!!!! ❤
the four most expensive words are " while you're at it". Have fun working the boat
Bravo to both of you on your decision to refit Uma. There are graveyards of dead fiberglass hulls littered along coasts of the world with mountains of nonbiodegradable polyester and epoxy resin that will probably still be there in the centuries to come.
You said several times that plywood is cheap so I feel I must tell you that this is no longer the case in Europe. Here, in the south of France, I've seen the price jump 300 to 500 percent in the last 2 years depending on the grade. I've seen marine grade 19 mm at 160 euros the square meter! I've now resorted to making my own. Also, if you need teak, the use of robinier (pseudo acacia robinicus, or better known in North America as Black Locust) is widely available in southern Europe and is much stronger than teak and just as resistant to rot. Its just a little harder to work with. Good luck to you both. I'm off to Martinique to bring a sloop back here so in 6 weeks I hope to catch up with all the progress you are bound to make on elegant Uma.
Buy yourself an air fed full face mast much more comfortable and the positive pressure is easier to work with. Not cheap but much better.
Wouldn't you have to ease off the halyards before doing any structural work? Otherwise you might lock in the distortion?
Moving onto Uma II 👍
The toy and home my wife & I play with is 50yrs old and we maintain things that surface ourselves .
Which means you need to wear many trade hats 👍
Then you need to get licensed please I can't emphasize that enough 👍
"It's just plywood"!!! :))
Amazing how much stuff you can stash away on a boat.
I’m sooo excited to see y’all working on the boat again! This is how you got me watching weekly!
This is going to be fun to watch!
Its interesting to see to be able to think about all the gear you hv and then get to. Decide do you really need it? do I hv something or a group of things that all do the same job then decide hey I can toss 4 things for just the one that can take its place . hooray more space less gear better efficacy.
Buy a 🛋
So glad that you decided to fix the old girl! Holy Crap what a bunch of work, remember, it's like eating an elephant, one bite at a time! I have no doubt you guys will get it done! Very ballsy!!
You guys aren’t realizing those floor plates are structural bracing. Taking those out while I’m the water is going to allow the outer hull to flex, which is exactly what you’re trying to correct. Love you guys but I don’t feel you’re going about this correctly. 👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🤘🏻🤘🏻
I know I am being redundant, but it's true, you are the most fun to watch of all.
Instead of adding more and more layers of just fiberglass, you could achieve insane stiffness AND a bit of insulation if you put in a layer of foam sheet to achieve a composite foam sandwich type of constuction.
I was seriously rooting for you two to buy a new sailboat, but hey, this is more entertaining to watch. lol
I know that with the experience gathered so far on upgrading Uma for the last eight years, you will create a super yacht with a far better setup. I will cheer you on on the new challenges ahead.
Guys really get rid of that old thing get a nice cat and you'll probably get another 100,000 subscribers
I’ll bet you can’t put all that stuff back on Uma ! 🤔, 😂🤣😂 !
Wrong side of the Ocean? In Europe you can work on your boat in the most marina´s.
Firewood storage ? Better in the engine compartiment, so heat from engine dry the wood.
Seems to me you will have done all the really hard work removing stuff and you could be able to complete the repair yourself with all that gear removed. You can do it!
It's scary when YOU say it's a bit over your head. 🙄
At the end of this someone needs to make Dan an honorary Naval Architect…
what packrats, who lived there?
