  1. I built a set of batteries(LIFEPO4) for around $1300 including parts and wires. 560AH in the size of two smaller automotive batteries. Salty Escape made some after I told them about my batteries. The video is there on their channel.

  2. If you watch yacht Fiona, it’s an old man sailing on with the steering steering mechanism like yours and his brakes all the time course he is doing the northwest passage and a few other things, but make sure you just carry lots of spares for that chain watch a few of his episodes seems like an every episode that chain breaks

  3. If you have trouble finding that chain, try a tractor supply house. Fit the chain you have and see if the length is good. The ends may have been replaced a number of times. You might need half a dozen extra links. Save trouble and replace all the wire rope and rope clamps in the steering now. Something to check is the steering wheel shaft gear. Inspect it for damage and for the connection to the shaft. Originally it was a taper pin, (they only come out one way) but often there is a bolt and a sloppy fit as replacement for the pin that dropped into the bilge. Spare pins are cheap. Good luck.

  4. I use a 10 yr service life. Have you greased your furler yet. Are bearings good. Failure will occur furling the head sail just as a breeze comes in

  5. Depending on the cost to repair your AC, and given that you have LifePo batteries, you might consider going with a 24v DC powered AC unit. A fellow cruiser/Ytuber Emily and Clark's Adventure, with Clark an engineer designed and has manufactured a low power DC draw AC system , that can run all night off a 12v 100ah lifepo battery. Not as expensive as some DC powered AC units but still costs a bit. Note- Clark also created a device that allows LA starter bat and Lith bats to work well together, especially when charging from engine alternator. No relation to channel, just a viewer.
Given the new electronic equipment, good thing you got more PV power.
Hope you can find new steering chain but if you can't, you can have it tested for micro cracks using a penetrant that glows under UV light and a UV light. The cracks become visible under UV light. Getting a repair link will work even if it is a larger size or different pitch since you will never turn the wheel far enough to reach the pedestal sprocket. The Quadrant stops should be touched long before new chain link reaches the sprocket.
Great Video. Hope you have moved some of the To Do items to a Done listing.

  6. Inspirational. Sail a Atkin Ingrid out of SoCal. Built the hulls for a Wharram Tiki 46 on my property in NorCal. " Building MaTiki" on YouTube. Shipped off to Key West, say hello to them for me.

  7. While your at pull and reseal pedestal to deck joint glass holes re drill. Do before water ruins core! Ask me how I know.

  8. Most of the sailing channels focus on sailing to exotic locations with a beautiful girl and the wind in their hair. I appreciate you guys for covering more than that. I realized many years ago that owning a cruising sailboat involves about 80% of my time working on broken stuff and adding new stuff, with only 20% of my time sailing to exotic destinations with a beautiful girl. Thanks for covering it all. Reality is good

  9. The SS roller chain looked like sizes 60 or 80 (it is stamped on the link) Amason sells it also supply warehouses like McMaster-Carr or Grainger is a good places to look for it.

  10. That pedestal looks a lot like an old Yacht Specialties Co pedestal. They are out of business but Edson sells chain and cable sets that fit YSC. Since one of the top causes of offshore CG rescue calls is rudder failure, you want to make sure the rudder system (including the idler pulleys and shafts) are in good working condition.

  11. Funny thing with a boat , you can think 'Right everything good to go ' ! then stand in the middle of the cabin ,look around ,and come up with yet another huge list of 'to-do's ' ! Still ,never boring, is it !

  12. Good luck with the AC and Helena using her electric cooking pot. Both will kill your batteries in no time at all. I believe you mentioned that your batteries were totally drained once already. Every time you drain a battery that far down it shortens the batteries life (charge cycles). What were the mfr dates on the batteries that you have, usually they have a date code stamped on a terminal and you have to log on to the company website to convert to the actual mfr date. Best not to buy a deep cycle battery that has a date greater than 6 months old (Fresh batteries), as you do not know how they have been stored at the store/warehouse or even if they were kept in a float stage. The dates of each battery should be within a month of each other.

One IMPORTANT thing to remember about a 12Volt deep cycle battery is that a full charge is 12.6Volts and a 12Volt battery that is at its 50% voltage is 12.3Volts, I know that does not sound right, but it is. A DEAD 12Volt battery is right around 10.5Volts. That happens to be "0" Specific Gravity of the battery.

You also need to know how many watts each of your big drain devices use, IE AC, Electric Heater, Microwaves, Hair Dryer… to calculate the Amps that your wires will be carrying. You do not want to start a fire in the boat, or kill your batteries in an hour or two. If Helena's electric cooking pot uses 1,500 watts your wire to the outlet where it is plugged in must be able to carry 12.5 amps. (1,500 watts / 120VAC = 12.5Amps) easy formula to remember, part of Ohm's Law. So for your new AC, it may be rated at 18 amps running (2,160 watts) what is the starting amps as that is when the compressor is just starting up and it will be more than the 18 amps. I was just using these numbers as easy examples. Best to make a list of items and their wattage ratings (usually listed on the item) so that you do not use any combinations that will rapidly drain your battery and the list will give you an idea as to how long you can run it without killing your batteries. I recommend 1/00 copper wire from the batteries to your cut-off switch and to the distribution point (fuse panel), just to be safe.

We have 12 years of Solar RVing and a lot of Dry Camping (no campground electric), Solar/batteries are great if properly maintained and not abused. Like only using the Microwave at high-noon with 100% of sun, absolutely no AC on batteries.

Now you know why my nickname is ElectronicsNut.

Have fun! Wave as you pass Dunedin on your way south.

  13. You can use steel master links or half links if you just grease them up.Most auto parts have them,be sure and examine your stainless cables as well.A marine supply has the crimps to make new stainless cables.

  14. Hey, would you mind covering up your wife's/girlfriends titty-poo's in your thumbnail!?!?!?!
Did you ever hear of little creatures called,,, ~CHILDREN~ ??????? THOSE ARE PRIVATE PARTS,,,, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO HAVE TO RENAME THEM,,,, ~ PUBLIC-PARTS~????
