  1. First job on a 1929 built steel hull was chipping out the chain locker, when water started pouring in the mate made a wood tooth pick & drove in it the hull. The bow looked like it had kitty cat whiskers when we lifted into dry dock. Yes all of those plates were replaced.

  2. I know nothing about hydro vanes so this might not apply. I've had issues with a shaft through ball bearings build up lateral tension and then pops as tension is relieved. Applying lube to the shaft so it can slip through the inner race easily eliminates the pop.

  3. Waterline bilge pump discharges are a dangerous vanity that leave you reliant on a check valve or siphon break. Better a bit of dribble on the topsides and a high discharge.

  4. I had thought the sea cock was for cooling the engine?, sea cock to water strainer, water strainer to heat exchanger, heat exchanger to exhaust. I'm not following how the bilge pump is connected to the sea cock…

  5. I truly enjoy your videos so much! Hard to believe you don't have three times the subscribers. Well, you'll get there.

  6. Looks like as close to a perfect passage as you can wish for. Thank you for sharing with us. And I will now see if I have a check valve on my bilge pump!

  7. Wow ..was a bit concerned in the first few moments of this video ….You guys are just fantastic at working these problems out though! Another great episode guys.

  8. Just another reason to fit 3-way valve thru engines sea-water thru hull. Shut engines water feed off which will open the extra port to which you can attach a hose that can lay in the bilge or be held so that you can use the engine as a bilge pump.

  9. I think it was Capt Fatty who said "If you are getting the water out faster than it's coming in you are only taking on water. If the water is coming in faster, THEN you are sinking." 😂

  10. I am so happy when you two post a video. Even with the issue with the bilge, the circumstance seems well managed. I'm getting a check valve on my bilge pump! Haha

  11. It's an eye opener how even a little water, takes lot of work to pump out and keep under control.

  12. One of the best on YouTube
    Thank you
    Down to earth people
    Love the show every time
One day when I am sailing I hope to bum into you both
    Best wishes Paul
Sv quicky (not on the water yet hope to have it in this year)

  13. Another sound a sailor doesn't want to hear…"We found the part you need, but it's on the other side of the planet and it'll take 3 months to get here, plus shipping."

Unless of course you find a pilot that can make the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs

  14. One can clearly see the journey Khiara is going through, fear, stress, uncertainty, courage, and relief. Beautiful to watch. Adam, you're stone cold, man. Are you human? lol . As stressful as it may be at times, I get the impression that Milli's personality almost forces the both of you to become better. Better sailors, better people. Millie is a bottomless pit of lessons. What a blessing!
Keep rocking, guys! As far as duos go, you're up there with the best of them, Batman and Robin, tomatoes and cucumbers, ketchup and mustard, fish and chips, Adam and Khiara!
    Cheers!

  15. This taking on water situation is probably the biggest reason we're planning to build a cruising trimaran… with amas that have 100% of the main hull buoyancy. The idea of a hull filling faster than one can handle and being pulled down by the lead keel kind of freaks me out. It may become un-sailable or even flip in a very strong storm with major handling mistakes made but should stay on top of the water unless many bad things happen at the same time. And then it's a life raft, and you still have a inflatable life raft and dinghy. It's similar to the reason we're converting a school bus instead of buying a motor home… All steel means in a worst case scenario, it's likely more survivable. Understand that there are different schools of thought on the mono/multi debate, of course!

  16. What I love about you both is that you are true sailors. You don't need the fanciest or prettiest boat, the highest technology, or the latest and mostly useless gadgets. Keep on trucking!

  17. My biggest fear is fire at sea . Had an acquaintance go from hey there is smoke and we can not go below to call for help to the cockpit floor too soft to stand on to in the water is a few min and the boat burned to the waterline and sunk .

I have had water siphon down the bilge pump

  18. Had an odd bilge issue recently too lol… My check valve was creating an air lock somehow and stopping my pump from self priming even when submerged 😅

  19. That popping sound, does it sound like what it would if your first mate was to take the bronze spanner wrench and pop the inside of the cockpit every now and then? To see if you were still alive? You do know that you may be never able to figure out what that popping sound is just learn to except it…

  20. So what is wrong with this channel. You guys should be up with delos. I'm about 100 episodes behind. But indulged to see but I won't finish. But I suppose it's day in day out.

  21. The check valve goes in the hose. It prevent siphoning back. If you rely on the electric bilge pump it will drain the battery m, when the battery runs down the boat sinks, unless you are there to close the seacock and pump out. A check valve takes a few dollars and a few minutes to install. Better still is to route the bilge outlet hose to the stern where it will usually be above the water, and fill in the current hole.
