1. Boats eh? I feel your pain. Both my SD50s have worn and chipped teeth on the lower leg pinion gear and big gear wheel. One clutch cone has already been replaced. One engine has a leaking pinion seal between engine and SD. And…one dud AGM battery took out my whole battery bank 3 months ago. As you described, 100% one day 10volts the next!

  2. What a painful run for you guys. Just so long as you don't break little Archie. I hope he's healed well from the little accident you guys had.

  3. amazing how this radial lip seal gasket ate into the shaft…glad you could fix it!!
however, it's great to see you keeping your engine bays and technical areas immaculate, that's the way it should be.

  4. Love watching your channel and thank you for your reply to my query last video
I noticed in one episode that you were reading a Bible but I also notice that some of you are wearing pagan Hindu string bracelets. If you are relying on these for good luck then God cannot help you as these are not pleasing to him
    Safe travels Nick

  5. What a great video! I love how the whole family is so involved in all the repairs. Terrific education for the kids and great parenting!👏🏻👍

  6. Man, we went through a braking spree the last three weeks. The batteries, then AIS, then water maker, then washing machine… it never rains, but pours! well handled!

  7. The Iron Law of Sailing is: Things constantly break, and replacing them isn't cheap. Unfortunately, Happy Days has to obey this law. Those able and willing to help with the tough fixes are superheroes among cruisers! Videotaping the disassembly seems like a great idea. Eight-to-one block and tackle sure helps lift that engine– got to know your simple machines ! Wow, all that trouble was over a teensy little groove?! Yay, got the boat healed up. Now, time will tell whether you can pull off that ambitious voyage you're planning…

  8. Ga'day from 🇸🇪 (👈🏻 let the kidz guess that one😁) !
About bronze , first it's more expensive ,and it does not work to well with the high temps. in an exhaust.
    Love your channel!
    Fair winds and God speid👋🏻

Note: And of course the galvanic corrosion problem( which someone so excellently all ready explained)

  9. I love the way Bella is all ways in there to help when ever there is a problem, you have such great kids, great parenting from you both. Happy sailing.

  10. great video!! I'm happy to see everyone still in good spirits and I cant wait to fallow along this summer and see what adventures you guys find, hard work from the whole team pays off 🙂

  11. Great Video guys. I know it's never good when everything seems to break at the same time, but at least it didn't all break when you were on passage. Cheers from Texas.

  12. Kia Ora team. You really should have gone for lithium batteries, they are a game changer! Can’t speak highly enough about them. Rog

  13. Oookay, a bit of monday morning quarterbacking here.

First, (Archie), they don't use bronze because bronze is an alloy of copper with other metals, usually tin. And copper is an extremely reactive metal. If you put a bronze elbow in a steel exhaust, they will form what is called a "galvanic pair". It means there will be tiny amounts of electricity between them and they will corrode VERY quickly. Add to that salt water or salty moisture and the steel around that bronze elbow will rot like cardboard. You could make the whole exhaust out of bronze but then it would be expensive (copper is much more expensive than steel) AND you would then have to deal with galvanic corrosion between the engine block and the exhaust. Not good.

And second, (Dad), DO NOT improve such important things as generator. If they used a cast iron part, they had good reason for it. I suspect they did because cast iron is a good heat insulator and keeps surrounding parts cooler than steel. It is very important in a contained diesel engine. Remember diesel exhaust runs 200 deg C hotter than petrol. Order the cast iron part and leave it be.
