So this means you will not be modelling the marshmallow suits for the next few years except for boat maintenance days? Awwww nuts …

  2. Just knew you had a bag of Swedish Candy for them. Think Ryan is too much of a perfectionist to build a boat, however RAN sailing is building one in Sweden right now & Johan is a perfectionist too.

  3. Rather then spend 2-3 years building a boat from scratch, think I would rather buy a used Bluewater boat with a great pedigree and spend 1 1/2 years doing a great refit!

  4. Before quit the idea of building Polar Seal II you should try welding some aluminum. Sounds good??? 3 years welding aluminum?? Sounds amaaaaazing 🤪🤪🤪

  5. It's a big project and alot of work, if you want to do it then go for it, Matt and Jess really know what they're doing and they're already 2 years in with a long way to go. I thought you did a great job given that you hadn't done it before, absolutely agree with you at the end – there's always going to be people telling you not to do it and many of them might know how to do it better which you can listen to if you're wise but they're not there doing it so… good work with the prismatic glasses!

  6. The other big question when you want to build your own boat: Are you willing to be on dry land for 2 or 3 years, and not sailing? Not having built a boat, I think it would take me a year to build a dinghy kit.

  7. I built a 18' fishing boat from fiberglass and plywood. I consider it to be a "spiritual" activity.

That said, I have a lot of reservations about this built. First, it's going to take A LOT of time. I'm thinking 1000's of hours, but I don't know how complete of a kit it is. I assume they have to source at lot of their own hardware locally. Time consuming and expensive since you're buying retail. A tongue-in-cheek surface finish quality is measured in terms of "distance away you have to be for it to look nice". Getting a 1 foot finish takes a lot of work (but I didn't use peel ply… : ( ).

Second, you REALLY need to make sure you build it right. All of the joints need the right amount and type of fiberglass, etc. I believe any first time builder of a particular boat will make some mistake that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Or at least while they own the boat.

Finally, this boat is HUGE! It's a damn house on the water. My own personal belief is that you should have as small of a boat as possible. Apparently they have plenty of sailing experience and they know they really want this monster.

  8. A DIY project, whether car, plane, or boat, will provide exceptional gratification – FOR YOU. For those of us that can only watch, we need the project to be something not already posted so we can pickup some new insight. For example, SV Basic is a honeycomb/glass Catamaran; Ruby Rose is a factory-built semi-custom Cat with constant on-site supervision. RAN III is a wood/glass laminate monohull. Distant Shores is a custom aluminum monohull. To add max value, your project needs to add broader insight and not just piled higher and deeper. Maybe a solar power cat.

  9. I’ve now watched 12 minutes and I can say there is not enough “Beterhelp” therapy to get Ryan and Sophie’s partnership through a boat build.

  10. I’d build the boat then sail to French Polynesia and get lost in the bliss. Mostly because by the time I’d finished my body would be stuffed. 😂

  11. Wholehearted for the dream! Naysays are everywhere, I’ll leave it there. Lol. It’s a tricky decision but with the project management and drive you both demonstrate in every video I am sure you can tackle anything you set your mind to. I’ve got ptsd from a house gutting and rebuild I’ve just completed which blew my budget due to delays (that good ole supply chain thing) and some health issue that elongated timelines quite a bit. So my only idea would be to budget for at least 60% over initial budget of both $ and time. Let’s just say I’ve learned a lot. Now I just want to sell up and hit the ocean!!

  12. Start looking for an abandon Garcia Expedition instead, like Juho from @AlluringArctic, and have fun rebuilding it. The guy from life on the hulls has been building his for… 6 years already?

  13. Hahahaha! What a great ending. Love your parting gift – the strangest glasses ever.

Yes, follow your dreams. Regarding all the negative people in YouTube comments… while, you're out there doing the things you dream of, those negative people are just sitting at home, watching you follow your dreams, being angry about it.

  14. What you’ve experienced is called sweat equity. The people building that boat will have put in a tremendous amount of sweat equity. You have to decide how much you were up to. As my father said to me, Eazy-E died a long time ago.

  15. Sailing channels are devolving into two tracks: either building boats or making babies. Some (looking at you, RAN) are doing both.

  16. Hum do you want to sail or spend 5 or more yrs building a dream boat. Time goes fast people. Sail sail sail be content with your current boat. Just saying.

  17. Great comment on following your dreams. Everyone has different dreams and ways to achieve them.

It was nice meeting you and Ryan in Annapolis. Have fun!

  18. I don't think I'd stay subscribed. I sub'd because you were sailing, and novice sailors at that. It was fun watching you both develop into who you are. As someone else has mentioned you'd need a "special" hook to keep everyone around for the 2, 3 or more years while you build. Good luck with your decision, and I look forward to your visit to Canada.
