  1. Depends on who siezed the yachts. If seized by US they will not be returned, but sold off

  2. Don't know about Italian law but as per German law the government must take care of every sized asset and keep it in top condition. So likely Italy paying for all that or there's a special arrangement where they allow the owner to pay the crew but not to use the vessel (at least not until things are legally settled -> many Russian are disputing the sanctions and chances are that many of them will win in court as I read on Politico).

  3. They should possibly be returned after the conflict has been resolved. They are sanctioned and arrested. Property of the country arresting and keeping them. Those government can charge for upkeep and cost of their tax payers money at a rate favorable to their tax payers who are footing the bill. Or possibly sold to cover costs and should a profit be had returned to the tax payers

  4. I think it all depends on circumstances, if or when they can legally be confiscated. If a sanctioned oligarch keeps his nose clean, doesn't get criminally charged, pays what he owes after being taken off sanctions (which will take years…decades to happen), then yes, he will get his property back. If he is charged and convicted of any crimes (most are being hit with money laundering charges), then all his properties, including those not in countries sanctioning them, will be confiscated. (Just like the Fiji/Amadeus affair.)

But then, there's another issue to be dealt with. Russia, in Russia, has been confiscating western assets left & right. The amount goes into the hundreds of billions of dollars. Any of those persons or companies that have had their assets in Russia confiscated, has a legal right to claim them, in any international court… from Russian government funds, or Russian private persons, makes no difference. So, all that money and property will stay frozen until all such claims have been resolved. And that, will take decades.

So while theoretically, they could see getting their yachts back, what value will that yacht have after sitting at dock for 30 or 40 years? It'll be cheaper for them to simply refuse to pay what they owe, and forfeit what they own outside of Russia.

  5. you think italian politicians are willing to ruin their relationships with Russian billionaires over a couple of yachts?

  6. If I were the Russian federation I would sink all American oil ships on the high seas, make the Americans pay a price for the seizure of Russian owned boats, Russian submarines should sink the American LNG gas ships crossing the ocean on route to europe since the USA damaged the gas pipeline to Germany

  7. After about 10 months, the fees due on upkeep would approach the value of the yacht. So given we're getting on toward double that, yeah, the yachts should be sold off to offset port & other costs.

  8. When are we going to seize American yachts for starting wars in the Middle East, organizing coups against democratically chosen governments in South America and much more?

Because right now we are just being a bunch of hypocrites.

The only reason Russian yachts are being seized is because of Western propaganda.

I absolutely don’t agree with the war in Ukraine, but we can’t just punish private people because of mistakes that the west and governments made outside of the jurisdiction in which the “crimes” have been committed

  9. This “arresting” stuff seems like a silly thing if the boats do not get sold off. Why even bother? Is the thinking “we’re punishing friends of Putin by temporarily depriving them of their ocean vacations?” That would be silly. Sh*t or get off the pot!

  10. When is the runoff election in Turkey and if Ergodan loses will the Russian boats still have a save haven?

  11. I would like to see all sanctioned equipment sold off and the proceeds given to Ukraine (after all local costs have been paid). These cretins have lots of money, so this war becomes only an inconvenience to them this way and they will all be profiting from the war anyway. It hurts them more to lose a boat worth many millions.

  12. This very interesting clip is not in the main one, of yesterday, may I ask why.
It's a great bold suggestion that Italy may give the 4 boats back, wouldn't they seek permission from the EU first, I'm really interested to see an update, tks

  13. Astute conjecture, eSysman, seems like the most likely path; once sanctions lifted, owners pay fees, get their yachts back. But it brings to mind a glaring question: what is Russia really doing in Ukraine, really, and why has the West gone to these lengths to send Russia a message? Someday we'll find out…maybe.

  14. Isn't this similar to the Russian planes that were seized? The first Antonov plane is being returned to Ukraine from Canada now, the Russian company was sanctioned…
