I don't want to sound like a sycophant, I really don't, but these videos are great. It's not just the solo sailing done with genuine humility – I am a solo sailor myself and I remember a video years ago in which Patrick said on arriving at a pontoon, 'if someone offers help, take it' (common sense maybe but more often than not the opposite of what people actually do) – it is also the wit. Just terrific stuff, thanks.
That sound from the alternator might just be the belt slipping. How is the belt tension, and what state is the belt in? Possibly just replacing the belt and re-tensioning might be enough..
if the sea gods are on your side 🙂
EDIT: Just as I posted this, you mentioned solving the problem by tightening the belt..LOL
I lived in Verøy in 1995.
check the pully alignment that can cause belt squeal. Another great episode
… a well deserved capuccino 🙂
That noise sounded so much more like a belt than a bearing. Glad you tried tightening the belt.
That's great! FYI.. I keep a spare alternator, starter, water pumps, belts.. toilet pump.. etc. onboard.
Because you never sail bluewater boats and seemingly only sail bluewater, your videos are the most exciting!! I'm scared for you on these race boats, but thanks for sharing!!!
I wonder what your opinion is on the rigging of the boat, thus far. Tacking requires attention to the back stay – and now reefing going downwind is also a problem. These are two issues that add possibly unnecessary tasks for a solo sailor. I think it is safe to assume you plan to add solar panels, too… I continue to be impressed with your approach and attitude!
Well done and welcome to Norway
great
Re your ref to the viking sailors and their impressive feats crossing the oceans, is it worth thinking that we have just put them into a 'short' bit of sailing history, whilst their knowledge and abilities would probably have been accrued over many, many years of trial and failure. Thanks for your videos, they are brill ✌️ ⚓️🐬
Hi Patrick – thanks for another great and inspiring video! I'm a local sailor here in Bodø and I'm happy to help if you need some assistance or want to see our famous Saltstraumen:)
That's a really slick boat, Patrick! How do you find your two recent purchases compared to the Bavaria?
You're simply amazing and a great inspiration! Thank you once again for sharing your adventures …A cappuccino :-))
I subscribe to and watch quite a few sailing channels but your videos are by far my favorite! Thanks for the focus on the sailing with the added wonderful literary references and jokes. Just fantastic stuff!
On doit se sentir vivre sur une traversée comme ça?!
Really great video's Patrick. I'm half way down to your home port and these NE wind played havac with the sea state in the channel ,all over the place . My auto helm hated it .
Patrick, you're an animal! I also have to round up to reef the main, which is a real pain in strong winds and big seas. The gaff doesn't press against the lee shrouds though, I just lash the helm down and she will lay about 70 degrees to the wind while I tie the reef in. Yes, weather technology, better clothing, engines, furling systems have all made ocean sailing far easier than in the time of the Vikings, or the Clippers for that matter.
I had to wait a little to watch your two last episodes, having some American friends at home. No Chateauneuf du Pape for them but obviously the Saint Emilion (and saucisson and cheese from Auvergne) winned votes😉 That was worth waiting :great Nordic sailing 👋
The carrier Gerald f Ford is visiting Norway, so maybe…
Patrick, how much do you sleep on such a long passage? And how can you sleep with wind and waves coming astern throwing the boat around like in a washing machine 🙂
When you meet military vessels in open water are they always present on AIS?
I live in Bodø and saw your boat is still here, when are you planning on travelling further?😊
A fantastic voyage, well done. You deserve a crate of C9dP! The regulator on our alternator failed and started to over charge the batteries, “cooking” them. I didn’t realise until the batteries started gassing off, sulphuric acid fumes. could have been really nasty. I’ve a 9 second video of one battery boiling! but am unable to upload. The troubles & torments of sailing!
Well done Patrick, your an inspiration to us all
Hi Patrick – Great video and I really like your Yacht! Also my boys are enjoying the books your daughter has a bright career ahead as an author. One question, as I saw you scrambling to over the lifeline to stop the boat, what happen to your 'Docking Stick' from Canada? Cheers!
I'll have a cappuccino !! hahaha 👍🏻
You make it all look so easy!!! I have my own 23ft racing dinghy now which I intend to learn single-handed sailing and do some cruising in (locally) so gonna re-watch some of your older videos from when you first got your current boat. Looking forward to seeing where you head next.
Cappuccino? C’mon, mate… safe winds. Great videos
Great to see you out on another adventure Patrick , thank you for all the hard work and endeavour
Ps I did like your last boat more ,was very aesthetically pleasing
You are a real hero!
Very nice video, as allways.
Would you make a video about Bavaria 40 vs your other boat vs RM?? Pros and cons?
Hi, you are one true sailor thank you for all your videos .❤👍👍
I am not a sailor but the more I learn about modern sailors with modern weather forecasts and GPS the more I apricate how good the early explores were at sailing.
Another great passage. Enjoyed coming along for the ride! Well done! Cheers!
An amazing adventure! Sailing away Thanks for sharing! . Bravo!!!
Welcome to Bodø! I don't know if your videos are in real time or if you've already sailed on, but if you need help or advice for the area around Bodø and Lofoten, I'm happy to help!
Hi Patrick I hope you do not mid but my I arks how old are you as I am about to head off sailing from Australia and I am 60 years young and about to start my solo sailing life.
That noise from the alternator sounded like a belt slipping rather than a bearing.
Congrats for this episode. I'm still curious to hear about your experience with the top down furler, compare to the sock-system. Furling, I saw this, works well. What are your thoughts by furling in?
Hard performances, I appreciate. Thank you for sharing your trip with us!
I just came down with the flu thank heavens i had my flu needle. Very bad aches and pains. About the belt you need to measure the depth and width of the pulleys. Then check the belt.
Welcome to Norway Sir. I was trying to post a link to an article regarding a military exercise including the air force of Norway Sweden and Finland + allied air crafts, going on in the Bodø area, but guesss the link was mistaken for spam. You are an retired fighter pilot if I remember correct?
Hi Patrick, it sounds like the alternator belt is slipping, if the batteries are low and putting a heavy load on, it could slip if it needed a bit of a tighten, worth checking out before buying an new unit?
🙃I made that comment before I saw the end of the video, nice trip.
What a great trip. i was freaked by the size of those waves!
From Mary Poppins to Shakespeare to Kristofferson; your references kill me. All while crossing the Norwegian Sea and making it look easy. Well done sir!
