The burden of boat maintenance can surely become overwhelming, I would suggest farming out some of the work to professionals. Apply your time and resources to more important things than replacing a toilet, it will be money well spent.
Wondering if before moving onboard did you do all your home and vehicle maintenance yourselves or is that a new addition to the lifestyle?
a great episode. And very realistic
Congratulations Sophie! your English has improved so much……
English Teacher.
8:00 "Everybody is taking their boat out for Memorial weekend, and I am banging my shitpipe".
We all celebrate in different ways, Sophie!
Thanks for such an honest view of boat life. Every parent of a teenager will be showing this video to their kids who all think that playing games on YouTube is a guaranteed way to become a millionaire overnight!
Judging by the thumbnail I thought Sophie had a boob job – alas it was a poop job!
Usually during the week of Labor Day, a storm hits New England, either remnants of a hurricane or a local gale. It's when the transition to fall weather kicks on. At the least there will be sizable swells then. Of course, not every year, but . . I suggest you plan to be near a safe anchorage during the first week of September. After about September 15 is when the best cruising weather starts here, and is when people head south.
Sailing is what you do in the middle of boatworks, major and minor refits while having a lot fun with bureaucracy (I'm not counting the money side)
First time on your channel. Thank you for being candid.
I'm thinking of buying a boat. But I don't like fixing things. Nor working in constraint spaces.
So, I haven't decided.
Awesome video, really enjoyed it.
Refreshingly realistic. Our world has been put in the blender this decade and personally I get a lot out of the escape and variety of sailingtube. Being candid about your mental health and how you both cope just brings your channel into a very relatable focus. I look forward to your videos, at whatever frequency keeps you thriving!
The thing about boat yoga is….. it's not really yoga! 😂 We just spent 3 weeks refitting. The bruises, strains, and pains are all real but worth it.
By watching your videos I have come to realize that Owning a Boat is like owning a RV that floats !!!
I applaud your discussion of mental health issues and the challenges in gaining access to effective treatment as you move around. As a psychologist and sailor, I can understand the need for such support, as anxiety and stress can be constant companions with such an activity. The issue of licensing and restrictions on who can see whom in what area/location is certainly a challenge. Good luck with all of your preparations! Hope to see you in Canada sometime.
”Boat Yoga will destroy you.”
I concur. But still do it for a living. Why I strive for simplicity with my own boats.
I predicted that your shit pipe would plug up again quickly. As I said when you first did the repair, it is caused by the loss of velocity of the liquid where you changed from 1" to 1½". You need to run 1"ø from the head, all the way to the tank with the reducer as close to the tank as possible.
😎
Good for you Sophie for dicussing about Metal Health, having to have to deal with kids who have mental health issues of various kinds. Great Stay Brave!
Funny that – based on how you was talking – I got a suspicion that you was going to talk about a problem related to the poop tank – was correct.
It's the No. 1 problem liveaboards talk about. After all, very few people live a few meters – sometimes less than a meter – from a stench bomb.
It is certainly not all champagne sailing! Well done for highlighting some of the stresses and working through them. Remember. Breathe…..
Sounds like a constant nightmare. I think that if you are now requiring mental health care it's time to quit the cruising lifestyle. That is not normal! I feel sorry for you Sophie, I don't think your heart is in this anymore, but possibly you feel obliged to continue. You have been through a lot of horrible experiences during your covid captivity on board. You seem much happier on land and within bricks and mortar. Same with poor Barnacle. No doubt you can have a great career on dry land.
The "therapy industry" tries to convince us that therapy is normal, that everyone needs it, that it's not a problem. I don't accept that. They just want the money, just as the drugs companies push Fentanyl on us. I suspect that if one needs therapy one is going down the wrong path in life and needs to make a change.
Great to hear your true opinion about boat life. Maybe not always charming but every now and then very rewarding.
Love and respect to you both! Super tough topics and reality checks and I’m grateful that you bring them up and share your experience. Hold onto the passion with one hand while you battle the shit(hose) with the other and we’ll keep cheering and being part of the long-distance support team!
Great video! Enjoy your take on life!
You speak the truth!
So recognisable, living on board for 12 years. We even have our own barnacle, although his name is lucky. And we added a now toddler for some extra fun hindering the boat yoga. It gets worse since some of the core support people have passed. Nevertheless once you start to sail again… you know why you did it.
It’s all in the head isn’t it?
I like your channel however I'm like you I would not want to be dependent on the income from YouTube. I would only make videos for my pleasure and to keep family and friends up to date on my adventure. If I ever get to join you on the water I plan on having a big cash reserve to fund my adventure. Figure the odds. Until then I will just enjoy watching you.
Boo on the online therapy site has a lot of flaws, and great job of the realism behind the scenes. It's not all adult beverages with paper umbrellas in paradise for anyone.
