Thanks so much for all the positive comments! Just a few quick clarifications:
-We do expect to be fully reimbursed for the repair (minus the $6,400 deductible) by our cargo/transit insurance company. If we do not we will certainly let you all know.
-Ultimately it probably is on the shipping company or their insurance or another third party for the damage however, in order to get payment for the deposit from our insurance company they required us to sign a subrogation form meaning we relinquish our rights and give them to our insurer to pursue the matter on our behalf.
-We think it is crazy that we owe a $6,400 deductible for something that happened before we even touched our boat especially when there was an option to sign up for a "Deductible Guarantee" program offered by the shipping company that was not presented to us. This is in addition to $4,000 airbnb because we could not stay on the boat in the yard. Insurance refused to cover this expense.
You should have called me. I have a duplex 1 hour from Bridgeport! Love your videos. Stay well
Have we not heard of an attorney? Let the ambulance chasers deal with the insurance. They've gotten way out of hand the last few years! LET THE DOGS OUT!
Why take delivery if it arrived damaged?
Glad you got the boat repaired. And good move on the fresh bottom paint while having the boat on the hard.
Maddening…to say the least.
Feel your angst. Good video.
I would have thought the onus and claim was totally on the shipper to fork out the Full amount of the repair work !
As per usual Insurance companies will do there utmost to avoid liability for bloody anything-makes me so mad!
So sorry this happened. Sadly not surprised to hear about the insurance companies. They shamefully say no, delay, and make you wonder why we pay them to begin with. Shame on them. They also never pay the full cost, which includes your time and added expenses. Lesson learned in my life: never trust insurance companies. I hope people who work for them sleep terribly at night, until they change this industry from within.
Sorry about your boat insurance problems… looking forward to seeing you guys back sailing South soon
Sorry to see you guys struggle. I’ve missed your weekly video but now know why
I have learned that insurance companies charge enormous money for premiums and pay out the tiniest amount, however they spend billions on TV commercials telling you how great they are. Insurance companies are better scammers than Congress.
Insurance companies are nothing but crooks
Sounds like you have the wrong insurance company
As a boat owner, you purchase insurance against shipping damage. The insurance company provides that service. And yet, when the damage occurs, they don't want to pay. The insurance company does not have any legal recourse not to pay for a service you purchased from them. The insurance company can do its part for the customer by decertifying the shipping company that damaged the boat.
Whats sad is the company's involved responsible for moving and hauling your bu ta ful sv had to have known they damaged your boat at some point by crew that was doing it sometime during the process if it was done right and they said nothing and there was no report of the incident made and if there was it wasnt made known to you before your survey inspection upon receiving it ? That's shady business as well wrong on their part no matter how they try justifying it…take care you two thank you for sharing all that you do…
Do you understand now why insurance companies are so rich? Your video is very instructive. Hope it will help a lot of people. Thank you😊!
Very educational episode, thanks. Unbelievable!
Sorry.. That happened….BUT NOW YOUR MOVING FORWARD..Have Fun…Fair winds..For Both of You.
Thanks for the information
Like to addd no5 do not accept a NO. If you get a NO let them explain in detail why and where it's excluded in the policy. know that the insurance company is not your friend they are making money by not paying out money so and will use anything to decline a claim. Question why not let the insurance company deal directly with the repairer? That's what I am used to in Europe and here in New Zealand.
Name the insurance company! We all need to know, so we don’t have these problems. You need a good lawyer! Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.
My wife uses LMNT almost daily.
Great video, you guys! The squeaky wheel is the most important part of that story. Sometimes I’ve called three times a day and get to be thoroughly annoying to the people at the other end. I also write down have continual log of exactly who you called what they said, and how to get a hold of them. Sorry you’ve had such a bad time! Hoping the shippers insurance really did cover something like the deductible. Call and call again and call again and call again.
Take care and thank you!
I think I would find out if somebody is an attorney and they can write some letters demanding payment. It’s amazing what happens when you get a letter from an attorney as compared to just a little old you and me.
It is not even my boat and I felt heart broken when I heard about the damage.
Look into "ALE, Additional Living Expense", it is a cost incurred due to an unforeseen loss with a property claims; there may be a provision in your policy for that. From what I am hearing I would recommend you hire an Attorney. I am an Adjuster though I only handle property (Commercial and Residential). While there may not be a provision for ALE the boat is your home and a lawyer may be able to work with that. As far as them not paying you until the job is paid for that is not reasonable, they owe you for the damage whether you repair it or not. Again, I do not do boats but have worked thousands of claim over the years.
You guys need to post more often
Sure empathize with your situation…dang. On your props, is there some sort of anti foul that you can use?
Quick note: Been watching you guys for years, and I've loved watching you grow. For no particular reason this video is one of my favourites – not the most entertaining by far, but there's something very personal about it, and I can't help but admire you two. Just wanted to say.
Ok, before I became a Watertriber in a previous life I was a yacht insurance underwriter. One very important point for all to remember is there are two distinct types of marine insurance. The cheapest is Actual Cash Value, similar to auto. In a total loss you will only get what it is worth today. The expensive type is Agreed Value where in a total loss you get the value on the policy. My advice is look for the oldest company in the business and get what you pay for. Cheap today may be very expensive tomorrow.
Wow! What a mess. Glad you got it all taken care of.
I would not wish "insurance scenarios" on anybody but I really appreciate your forthrightness. Why would anyone pay to acquire a "Catch-22" ? You have educated me and I am grateful. Unfortunately, I equate insurance with extortion and "necessary evil". I wish it were possible to have an insurance company behave favorably to customers without headaches. If anyone knows of any please let everyone know of them !
