  1. A friend of mine was at the helm of a very heavy, steel hulled gaff rigged beast of a ship in 30kts. We'll within the capability of the ship. Whistling to pass her watch, the English captain owner pops his head out of the companionway and says, "Oi! That's quite enough wind, thank you!"

  2. Thanks for sharing this superstition! I noticed that you pronounced Fletcher Christian’s surname as Christiansen. Was this an error, or do you have information that indicates the longer surname?

  3. the royal navy banned whistling to because it signaled the start of a mutiny? they do realise that the people starting a mutiny won't care? i mean at that point whistling is probably the least of the rules they are breaking.

  4. This superstition carried over to another profession where workers are high in the rigging working with ropes and weights- the theatre! Whistling in the theatre is bad luck too, and often associated with falls or items being dropped from the rafters.

  5. Whistling makes the wind blow. And brings the skin walker. And add to that, I´m a woman, so my whistling makes the Lady Mary cry 😁To think that I learned whistling from my mother, and my former navy lieutenant father used to call us kids by whisting a special tune.

  6. As a casino dealer, I've been trying to establish a similar superstition on poker tables. "Don't you know it's bad luck to whistle on a poker table?". Because it's annoying. Got a song in your head? Keep it there!

  7. I was aboard a cruise ship in 2013. I whistled to my wife to get her attention. She was rught next to me, so it was a pretty soft quiet whistle. The Captain was within a few feet if me as well. He quite sternly, but still somewhat politely told me to never whistle aboard a ship.
The ship was the Carnival Triumph. The next week the poop cruise happened. (which my cousin was actually on). Just don't let anyone know it was me and my whistling that caused it.

  8. I have a fascinating addendum to this. I went to (and still am) in school for theater. Theater practitioners are notorious for their superstitions (Don't say Macbeth in a theater, don't walk under a ladder, etc) but one of those was also "Do not whistle on stage." I was taught that this stemmed from the early days of theater. Early stage hands in the more modern and complex theaters were sailors in port. The rigging and fly lines were run by these sailors, particularly due to their knowledge and skills at rigging on ships, and as such, they would use whistles commands to adjust the rigging accordingly. Whistling was forbidden outside of this context for fear that a whistle could cause a piece of scenery to suddenly, and dangerously, change.

  9. If you whistle on your ship and nothing happens, does that mean it was just that: a legend? I’m thinking that some of these legends were created to get men to behave while at sea 🤷‍♂️

  10. I have a sorta funny story on bad luck and whisling, but it happened on land. I have this aunt and she is the greatest sweet heart of a person, really unique wholesome human being, but she also has a lot of phobias and one of them is people whistling close to her.
One day she was at a grocery store in a line waiting when a man behing here started cheerfully whistling a song. That made her gradually more unconfortable until she blew up. In tears she turns to the man and screams "YOU NEVER DO THAT AGAIN". People around tought the guy was abusing or harasing her in some manner, so our innocent whistler had to flee the store under the menace of being linched. Meanwhie she is totally nevous unable to speak and explain the situation, what makes her even more nervous and unable to speak.
It took quite a while for her to calm down and explain the situation to the mob trying to protect her.
In the end everything turned alright but our casual whistler is still on the lose and nobody was able to apologise to him.
