  1. Hmm…not really any 'correct' answer to this one imho, Captain [but $18k!?!]. We keep adding complexity to things, rather than learning the skills that don't just go 'bang' when you need them. 15-way power seats in cars spring to mind.
As you point out, we are also putting more holes beneath the waterline, especially retro-fitting. Learn how to bring a 9m alongside before you buy a 14m. I guess I'm sort of against putting bow thrusters in, as a general rule.
Yep, I'll support your friends Tim, but a link would help me. Hi to our Digital Mermaid! 💙

  2. Too bad I missed you in Annapolis. I searched around for your booth or tent. I think bow thrusters are really needed on 40 plus feet full keel boats. Good subject, though.

  3. To talk about bow thrusters without talking about full keel boats is kind of pointless. My long keel 36' is impossible to turn at slow speeds in tight quarters, especially in reverse. The rudder is absolutely useless on full keel boats in these situations and the bow thruster could be a necessity. On a boat with a fin keel and spade rudder, it's definitely a door bell.
The other factor is med mooring. Ask Project Atticus (Pacific Seacraft) what's it like mooring stern to in Greece without a bowtruster.

  4. I saw the title of this video and cracked up. My wife and I are heading south on our IP 380 and just before you posted (while sitting at anchor in Ft Lauderdale) she had been asking about installing a bow thruster. I told her that as much as my pulling up to the fuel dock leaves much to be desired, retro fitting a bow thruster is a big job.

  5. My last yacht was without a Thruster, i got into a few sticky situations where i wished i had one! especially as i run solo most of the time. I priced fitting one and quotes around $20,000! so i never went ahead, my new yacht however has a thruster and boy what a confidence booster berthing in tight marinas! i'd never be without one now, if new boat shopping again it has to have a thruster, if not i'll ask for 20-30k off the price so i can have one fitted otherwise i'd walk. It's one of those things that once you've had one you wont want to go back.

  6. so mad we missed seeing you at Annapolis! We are going to getting a boat next spring, hopefully a great lakes boat and will be calling you for a consult once we are ready.

  7. This was super helpful, thanks as always for sharing!!! Sorry, I had reached out and will absolutely follow-up for help with forward planning (retirement, sailing, etc). This was just another super helpful video on something that I was absolutely contemplating. I truly appreciated the honesty and dialogue! Will be keeping in touch and reach out again for sure!
