  1. Suite Madame Blue is my favorite. The Grand Illusion has my favorite STYX guitar solos and LADY is the all time Classic STYX!! First Time here, GREAT STUFF!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎

  2. Styx didn't really have a particular sound. Multiple lead singers as their songs went from power ballads to more traditional 70's rock

  3. This was the second song I ever heard from Styx (not even realizing it was Styx), right on the heels of the one song that I reckon a LOT of people will say was their first Styx song : Mr Roboto.
Roboto inevitably led me to the parent album, Kilroy Was Here (1983, a loose concept album about a dystopian society where all rock & roll has been criminalized and made illegal, and Japanese manufactured "Mr Robotos" now occupy all the old menial labor jobs once held by humans – is this sounding eerily familiar yet? Almost prophetic?). Come Sail Away prompted me to pick up a few of their hits compilations and I discovered so many other amazing songs. Styx has/had 3 lead vocalists : Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, and James "JY" Young, so you may notice a change in lead vocals depending on the song.

  4. You have opened up another nice rabbit hole to explore here…. Lots of good ideas for the next one to listen to – Grand Illusion, Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Babe, Sweet Madame Blue and Mr. Roboto to start!!!!!

  5. If you do Lady (no, not the Lionel Richie song made famous by Kenny Rogers), I strongly recommend the newer 1995 version ; it's a little cleaner and more polished and just better in terms of production, but remains true to the original arrangements, so you won't be missing out on anything.

  6. From here in Chicago. Love these guys. i saw 2 times. My brother got to be friends with them when they were only playing High Schools before they hit it big.

  7. this was 1 of their biggest hits but this was the short verssion you need to hear the long 1 this one is missing most of the guitar solo.Ive seen Styx 5 times twice in the front row, Great band. Im going to request Renegade live by them in Chicago Thats a real rocker

  8. I saw Styx 7 or 8 times back in '72-'73, when I was 16. They were promoting their first 2 albums on the local Chicago "Wooden Nickel" label. They sold signed copies of the LP's for $5.00 to the crowd when they played at the local, "smoky" non-alcohol teen night club in the Chicago suburbs where my GF (future wife) was the coat check girl (lots of fringed "rawhide" suede jackets to watch). They would do a set from their first album, then a full set of Led Zeppelin covers (they didn't have enough of their own material for 3 sets at the time). Finally, they finished with songs from "Styx II". The crowd always went wild when they played "Lady" as the finale. They'd sit at the old, wood telephone cable spool tables with candle-wax covered Chianti bottles in the center (a staple of club décor at the time) with us "hippy kids" during the breaks between sets. They were just cool locals who eventually made it big. They even played a concert at my high school!

  9. Castle walls same album as song you just heard I can go on forever Chrystal Ball Grand Illusion Pieces of eight Rocking the paradise about now closed down theatre from their home town

  10. I ran karaoke shows for over 30 years and Styx Babe was the very first song I ever sang karaoke to…. Come Sail Away was my final in my college vocal class…. So many great Styx songs for you two to discover…. I've seen them several times live.

  11. You’ll need to hear quite a few tracks from Styx before you can really “get” their sound. They are unquestionably the most musically diverse band you’ll ever hear, largely because they have 3 songwriters and 3 lead singers with distinctly different musical backgrounds. Because of that, Styx has something for everybody. Prog, hard rock, pop, ballads, folk and techno.
I highly recommend Renegade, A.D. 1928/Rockin’ the Paradise, Blue Collar Man, Castle Walls, Too Much Time On My Hands, Crystal Ball, Miss America…I could go on and on! Truly one of the world’s greatest rock bands. Great vocals, soaring harmonies, brilliant instrumentalists. Enjoy!

  12. I gotta recommend a deep cut from the Kilroy Was Here album, a song called Just Get Through This Night. Tommy Shaw on vocals, it's one of those songs that just pulls you in.
It opens with a Japanese "banjo" (the exact instrument eludes me, but my guess, based on the quick search I did, would be a Shamisen/Samisen, or possibly a Sanshin), which is almost eerie or spooky.
The song is just so good. The lyrics are pretty good, too, which seems to be about perseverance and having the strength to go on against great adversity, as he states in many ways how he could achieve so many other great accomplishments, if he could only "just get through this night".
It's about 6 minutes of awesome and is one of my faves.

  13. Like Sam's Mom, I've also seen Van Halen and Styx, twice. The first time in 1978 on their Crystal Ball tour and then again last year. I just love them! Thanks for reviewing them and I hope you'll do a lot more. And keep listening to Sam's Mom!

  14. One of Styx's trademarks is a song that starts quiet and with sparse instrumentation, then segue into a more uptempo and sometimes rocky part, throwing all the instruments in. Other songs that follow this pattern include "Lady", "Suite Madame Blue", "Crystal Ball" – for an extreme example, "Renegade" has an early and very abrupt change from sweet acapella to a heavy guitar sound. I saw them in 1978. Excellent show.

  15. Although I am not a huge Styx fan, I think this song has one of the all-time best synth solos.
Vocalist Dennis Deyoung was eventually fired by the band he helped form, for being too bossy, to simplify it. He was replaced by a younger Canadian who recorded and toured under the name Gowan. in 1984/85 the industry buzz coming out of Toronto about Lawrence Gowan was such that for his album, "Strange Animal", he attracted Peter Gabriel's backing band, who in the 80s were the most in-demand session band in the world. You ought to give Gowan a listen. You could start with "Strange Animal" or "A Criminal Mind". His sound was a bit Avant-Garde and 80s-Progressive and his video for the latter track was quite innovative and original.

  16. GREAT song from an even GREATER band. Try Suite Madame Blue next off their Equinox album. Please lead into it with Prelude 12. Suite Madame Blue IMO is one of the greatest rock songs in rock history. After that I'd go with the epic deep cut Man In The Wilderness and then Renegade. Thanks for playing Styx.
