  1. I watched your boys hyperventilating prior to free diving.
This does enable you to stay deeper for longer, but how / why?

Hyperventilating before free diving is known to increase the risk of blackout underwater.

The “mechanism” by which hyperventilating works to increase your bottom time – is because it artificially lowers your blood carbon dioxide levels well below the trigger point that gives you the urge to breath urgently because your oxygen levels are depleted.

You guys are apparently all qualified at SCUBA so one would assume you know all these dangers, you should have learned all this during your SCUBA courses.

When at depth free diving, you have a much smaller volume of air in your lungs because under Boyles law – of partial pressures, the air in your lungs compresses at depth underwater.
Every 32 feet is one Atmosphere of pressure.

So the volume of Oxygen available to your blood vessels from the alveoli in your lungs at those depths is less than half what it is at the surface.

Then you’ve also artificially lowered the carbon dioxide level in your blood below the trigger point for the urge to breath.

As a result you feel fine as if you have more than enough oxygen in your lungs to sustain you at a time when you actually have less than half the lung full you inhaled at the surface.
The result is that you black out very quickly, it’s basically instantaneous – there is no black collapsing tunnel effect on your vision.

This is why I say “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”.

All of you should have well & truly known these risks and managed them accordingly – but you didn’t.

Kids had no dive fins on to give them an advantage getting down and back up faster, for eg.

Rob, I’ve said this publicly to you before.

I list all respect for you as a father, who would take their family into a 3rd world nation that has zero value for human lives, having murdered the Balibo 5 journalists, shot by firing squad Barlow & Chambers as just a couple of recent examples, not to mention the Khmer Rouge murdered your own brother.

It’s my personal opinion, as a commercial qualified skipper, and rescue diver, that your unfit to master your vessel with your family aboard

You are far to Cavalier with assessment of risks – which is evident time & again.

I would definitely NOT put my own family willingly into the risks situations that you repeatedly do.

No parent should outlive their child, but if you continue on in this manner & it eventually causes you to lose a family members life, you will never forgive yourself.

Frankly mate, man to man, you need to pull your head in, and get a far better grip in risks assessment, as a father & a skipper, because in both cases that responsibility falls on you.

Were your children younger & unable to make adult choices for themselves, I would have no hesitation reporting you to child welfare services, for the sake of your kids.

    It’s that bad.

All your doing IMHO is publicly showing the world your unfit to be a father, husband, yacht master or diver frankly.

It’s what you don’t know about being a mariner that’s the biggest risk to your family’s safety & well being.

Because I do know the risks – I’m more than happy to call you on it publicly.

    Time to man up sport.

You’re bringing your nation into disrepute. 🙄👎

  2. So glad Finn alright. Declan you're a hero for sure, above and beyond brotherly love. Everyone needs a brother like you. Rachael is a lot more sane then I am, because it would have been sell the boat land hoo. So glad again everyone alright.

  3. While I can't speak to the technical nature of the way the boys were freediving, I can say that they were all old enough to think for themselves. They made decisions regarding depth and technique which were theirs to make as young men. Accidents happen, and there comes a point when parents are no longer responsible for the actions of their children. Certainly there are lessons to be learned, and freediving is a dangerous sport in which to partake without sufficient safety instruction. The episode is a cautionary tale for anyone interested in the sport, but the bigger story is how you all reacted to the crisis. The way you worked together as a family decisively and with calm, clear heads to me is the bigger take-away. Disaster can strike at any time, but how we react to that disaster is what matters. You'll come away from this experience with a very difficult lesson learned the hard way and an even stronger family bond.

  4. Wow! Makes the hug from Finn a couple of weeks ago even more special after watching this. Tough episode to watch, so bloody glad things turned out the way they did. Take it easy in your recovery Finn, looking forward to seeing you out on water soon.

  5. Glad everything turned out well for you guys.
For the keyboard warriors in the comments section, we know the kiwis and a lot of your comments are absolutley uncalled-for.

However I'm sure everyone has some takeaways from this near tragic /close call.

The sun is still shining folks.
    Get outside and enjoy nature.

  6. Thanks for sharing this! it definitely will help others avoid or minimise this very real risk, and also know what to do if this happens…. and always dive with a buddy!!

  7. I was talking to a Lifeguard class the other day about drowning complications and that it can happen to everyone, including athletes. Glad that Finn is okay and continues to recover well.

  8. I wept as I watched this. Thankful for your fast thinking/acting dad/sons team. And yes, I always knew the EMC had a significant purpose in life, and this may well have been it, genuinely a hero.

  9. Prior to this I thought the biggest risk was walking in bare feet! I admire that you have shared this, taken soul-searching responsibility and learned from it. Some of the comments (no need to mention names) could have been delivered far more constructively. I have to admit watching this and sailing Zatara I see risks that 95% of us in western countries might feel uncomfortable about. However, most people are too afraid to leave the comfort of their jobs and homes to venture out as you have done. Risk comes with great rewards but of course all risks need to be managed. I really hope you can move on from this and that Finn recovers fully.

  10. I put off watching this after the last tease… I will say after it became clear he made it past the initial assault I was wondering/worrying about the secondary drowning. You all are living and learning. Thousands of folks learned something from this video or at least have had the opportunity to. I am so glad none of you are dealing with survivors guilt. I cried durning this video as it tapped into a long line of drownings and even secondary drownings that I have worked as a paramedic where the news delivered to the family has been devastating. Good luck to all of you with this recovery. Paramedics are needed all over the world. Actions taken here could naturally lead to one of you getting on that path. Be kind and gentle with one another as you all fully digest the near death experience of Finn! Much love to each of you with a little extra for mom! 😘

  11. Free diving is just a tragedy waiting to happen. It’s physiology. You can train all you want but when the body gives out it gives out. Don’t do it.
Really happy for you that all went well❤

  12. Thank God and Rob and the boys that Finn is alive and well, how traumatic for all of you. However a timely reminder that research, education and knowledge save lives, thankfully Declan remembered a clip he recently saw in a film.

Declan, you say you blame yourself for egging Finn on, DON'T! it's what young people do, instead, be proud that your knowledge was instrumental in saving Finns life.

Robs quick recognition that there was a problem was also key as was Ivan's youthful strength in getting Finn quickly to the surface and allowing Declan to lay his lips on him (paraphrasing Finn).

Rachel, understandable blind panic left you with a clear view of what needed to be done, as they say teamwork makes the dreamwork.

Finn, you area strong willed young man, it is possible that had your medical concerns at the worlds been listened to you may never have been in this position. I hope that this does not affect you career, Live your life to the best young man you are indeed fortunate. Love to you all.
