I remember back in the day that I had the Gaastra Slalom foil pro and I did send an email to Willem Blauww asking him about some rigging issues that I have with that sail that he designed. I was stoked by how quickly he did replay with valuable advice!. Best regards from Spain!.
met Bjorn and anders at speedweek in the uK.
Both nice blokes but Bjorn was a little more private.
Anders was brilliant and very approachable.
Sat opposite him and his lovely lady at the closing meal and he had some great storeys not just about windsurfing but he was also involved with Hydroptere.
Every windsurfer you teach at least one other person how to windsurf. Kona Link for teaching
I had a 5.7 and 4.7 slalom foil pro ,my first slalom sails. Awesome.
I don't care that much about old brand names. They always come and go, and it's the gear we get now that is more important.
For sure, we can be nostalgic about what was – and about who designed what and who won what – but if you look at the history of all types of sailing, there are several casualties along the way. Dinghy sailors might get nostalgic about boats they sailed back in the 1950s, or 1960s, or 1970s, but really they are only pining for their own heyday, as younger people discovering watersports for the first time.
The old school one design classes – like the Windsurf Regatta, or the LT – are great fun, but are a bit like an '80s boy band going on the nostalgia circuit for a tour. It's no longer a board people want on my local beach, because we have waves here..
In summer, we can teach light wind windsurfing with small rigs set on our SUP boards. (But most people do other things in light winds, like cycling or swimming.)
What really matters is the fun we get now, from modern windsurf kit. My waveboards are great. The current Olympic racing gear is amazing!
Windsurfing is still great, with some fantastic gear, dedicated to each type of windsurfing. And we can also appreciate the newer technology, like the current foiling phase of sailing.
In ten years time, some people will get nostalgic about the development of wing foiling. But nostalgia is not actually the thing we chase – it's the on-water action that is important, with gear that best suits your typical local conditions.

Hey, The Gaastra logo is still on the Ga-Sails.
I don’t really care what you guys talk about, it’s all good.
A wealth of info, for an isolated windsurfer newbie like me to get clued in on all kinds of windsurfing language and knowledge.
Guy Cribb podcast blew my mind.
It’s war.
It is going to flip, back to the source windsurfing, fin.
Would be amaaazing to have Thorkil Kristensen to do a podcast. Live in Denmark too and did follow him in all the PBA events. Never seen him live. But seen him have some newer equipment for sale on Facebook lately so must be windsurfing
bigup for your work Ben and Paul! Willem is an icon! and you're right about the Windsurfer LT : it's one of the essential key for saving windsurfing!
ben the diference description you want to tell between foil and fin that you miss is traction, foil there isn t so the feeling is not going to be so great as fin
Loved the chat about Gaastra. I worked in a windsurfing shop in the early nineties. We stocked Gaastra, North, Mistral, Tiga and a number of locally produced board brands. Neil Pryde were always the enemy!😅
I managed to get hold of some Gaastra clothes from Germany and yes they are expensive even on sale. Great chat guys.
Can we have old intro pls.
what about an interview with Peter Brockhaus?
Hey Willy, happy birthday for soon. Thanks for all the guidance and friendship over the years.
