  1. Buying a small boat to liveaboard ? There's a old saying about small boats " It's like living in a closet except you can drown " . Most small boats weren't designed for full time liveaboard . Does the boat have a head , hot & cold water , a galley , tankage for water & fuel , many marinas require a holding tank for sewage , the list on and on . before buying a boat do your homework and be realistic on what you need to live comfortably .

  2. my in laws had an late 80's 30ft tall rig catalina with a diesel. They offered to let us buy it when they sold it, of course we had a 6 and 4 year old at the time…. should have bought it. It was a great lake boat.

  3. I'm new to sailing and, being poor as a churchmouse (in yachtie terms anyway) paid £5k for a 27-footer last year. I love being aboard but it'd be difficult (i.e. near impossible) to live on full-time even alone.

  4. Love the choices of the Aloha and the Pearson. The middle 80s Pearsons had rubber gaskets at stanchions and unfortunately dried out and decks got soft. That said I recored the side decks and the owner figured out that using Plasdeck was cheaper than doing an Awlgrip job. The deck came out beautifully and looked like what proper teak deck would look like.
The only drawback to Catalina 30s is the lack of proper storage. The wonderful wide open space comes at a price.

  5. Another great video, mate. You're the man!

I agree completely with your preference for a wheel on a cruising boat, especially if you're doing coastal passages. In my marina full of die-hard tiller men, I've even had a few recently confess to how hard it is to sail all day sitting in the cockpit with their head turned sideways. It's an actual pain in the neck.

As for the wheel taking up more room, though, I have to respectfully disagree. In a smaller sailboat they're a bit of a pain squeezing past to get to the stern (unless you splash out for a folding wheel). But aside from that they provide actually more room in the cockpit, both when at anchor (we have a massive folding table where a tiller would normally be), and when underway. My partner does the wheel, and I can comfortably stand in the cockpit and work both the main and the headsail sheets. And as you say, it makes single-handed sailing a breeze.

Merry Christmas from down under (where we're all sailing right now).

  6. We have an '83 Catalina 30 with a beta20 engine and fixed smile. A spot of softer side deck on starboard I plan on fixing Spring of 2025. It is roomy, comfortable and well built, and I guess I could see a younger me living on it without major issues.

  7. I was lucky enough to get a beautiful Challenger 32 for $6,500. Everything a fellow needs to live comfortably, even a hot shower! Pretty darn good shape for a '77! I am fortunate to have good health and physical ability to still be sailing and enjoying it, at 86! Keep on "Keepin' on!" John

  8. 5 yrs ago I bought a Watkins 29 for $5000. It had a perfectly clean, almost new interior a fully encapsulated keel, no keel bolts. It had a 10ft 4" beam. It was fat Cruiser. Unbelievably slow but buikt like a tank with over sized standing rigging. Sold it for double what I paid

  9. No mention of the C&C 30? 🙂 The truth is there are a lot of great live-aboard boats between between 27' and 32'… Pearson, Ericson, Catalina, Bristol, etc. Great episode!

  10. Haha, right on, I've been saying the Catalina is the chevy and Hunter the ford of sailboats. I have a '90 Hunter 30 that I consider the maximum cruising layout possible in the a 30, and I pulled out the folding table for an open concept. It came with a Yanmar and raymarine auto and other extras that I picked in 2010 for 25k, worth every penny as I wanted a turn-key There were some really cool, cheap smaller boats around, like a Catalina 27 and Sabre 28 for less that 10K, but I'm a big 6'2" walrus and cant stand up in most of them. I can fully stand in the galley in the morning and cook, which cinched the deal. Anyway, cool episode!

  11. I get my sailing fix with a trailer sailer and that’s all I really want but daydreaming about a bigger boat I always thought of a Catalina 30 but after looking at a number of them I started shifting to the Catalina 28 for a number of reasons. Engine placement and access on the 28 seems far superior and the interior layout just seems to flow better, but I must admit I haven’t spent the night on either. Cheers and good luck.

  12. Out of Germany, a Dehler 29, she is very roomy, has all the cruising amenities, is fast, especially once winds exceed 7-8 knots.
I have added a code zero on a bow sprit & furler, tiller lock or an autohelm, what an awesome boat to solo sail.
Dehler 29 was first made in 1998 and is still in production today.

  13. Welcome everyone to the Fourth Annual Sailing Channel Awards! First, a big thanks to all of our favorite Sailing Channels who helped us vicariously crew along with you as you sail around the globe. Second, thanks to all who voted and either viewed the videos or even became patreons to help keep the content coming! With that said, our Award for Best Armchair Boat Banter goes to Lady K Sailing. Congrats on the great content, whether it is origins of sailing jargon, or guidance on solid, pre-loved boats to buy at a reasonable cost, so we can all get out there and sail, you provide the wannabe sailor community a great service and a path to go do it! Please keep at it and we will keep watching.

  14. I have a Catalina 25 up here in Washington state. Its perfect for the Puget Sound. Good for solo sailing. Spent over a year renovating it. I dont live on it but sleep on it quite often. I'm 6'1" and 230 lbs and fit in the V-berth quite comfortably. Love your videos Lady K!!!

  15. If you want a 28 footer get a Grinde dubbelender with a Yanmar. It will take you around the world in a build quality that is on the level off Halberg Rassy it’s a very good sailer, fast for its size and can really take some beating and you have tons of space with a beam off 3,2 meter. Sleeping up to 6-7. To women are actually on a singlehanded round the world trip.
Oh I forgot that you actually have more than 6 feet headroom in the
cabin. The design is still 50 years after it was designed modern looking and got the danish design medal 1977 for an extraordinary design. Go and check it out. Greetings from Copenhagen

    Jesper
