The problem is the varying angle as the rudder swings back and forth. The reason is that the connection to the rudder is at a right angle to the rudder. What if you put that thing up? so that it makes a nice horizontal movement with the block in the stern?
The more I see that bathing platform .. the more I think it’s a weakness that will cause you problems
While i think that the dynema rope is plenty strong and nice for the rudder system, specially where its stretching ability will help to mitigate the forces from hard impacts to manageable force, the slack in the not pulling line is way to much: Your rudder will endure forces moving it in both directions, and if you have slack in the lines it will flip-flop and pick up momentum while its moving uncontrolled. Need to get rid of the slack.
Did anyone think the steering system is far too free running? This is going to kick back, probably could break your hand with the steering wheel. Looks like if wheel is let go for a second she will steer herself and likely not in a straight line. This should be ripped out and replaced with hydraulic as everyone suggests

Century of boats cross ocean with such type of steering (without dynema) even if personally i will go for hydraulic system for such big boat, i think it can work easily repair at sea, cheap and « funny » to do. So go on Yaba team !

Love your channel. Five years ago I used a short length of 5mm dyneema rope with a cheap galvanised pulley and a house brick to rig up a rudimentary gate closer out the back. Gate gets used at least 4 times a day and the brick still goes up and down and the rope is hardly chafed. Soon you’ll be enjoying the stunning coastline of Brazil above and below the water. Do those big helm? wheels ever have a small handle coming out at 90 degrees so you can spin them faster if you need to go lock to lock more quickly. Cheers
Happy new year to you both . You could put a couple of turn buckles on the dynema before it connects to the rudder this will give you some adjustment when the dynema stretches.
Think you should have gone hydraulic with the steering those cables are gonna fail at some point it just doesnt look strong enough for the size of yabba!

I like the idea so one suggested of a steering spring to keep tension. Especially since dynema expands a lot with temperature variations. Most chafe will happen at anchor so I think the spring will help with that. Happy new year.
It might have been a good idea to flare the ends of the pipe guides, or at least the outside end.
Both of you and the yard workers have done an unbelievable, beautiful job of rebuilding this boat. I agree with some comments below regarding the steering system. This is one of the most critical systems. Dyneema ropes are very strong, but like all ropes they should be sliced and this is the problem, the dyneema is very slippery and can will fail at the slice. I'm a big fan of the show and have been watching for a long time. You guys work so hard! I am also restoring a large boat, an 80' 1931 motor yacht. I have never commented but as an engineer I think it is very important that I mention that ROPE WILL NOT WORK for your steering. It will be frayed at each support eye and coming apart within a year. You must use cable with tensioners. Alternatively, you can use a simple manual hydraulic system with a pump at the helm turned by the wheel, and long cylinder/s with ball ends attached between the rudder and the transom. The rudder is absolutely the last thing you want to take shortcuts on.
Dyneema is very strong. We use it to pull gliders up with a winch. Only 5-6 mm thick and will last for years.

Not only is this a Mickey Mouse setup, what prevents water from coming in through the rope holes? The length/overhang of the swim platform would even impress Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s going to need a cable ran up to the mast to support it if any weight is put on it.

When you removed those interior cable pulley blocks and mounted them vertically to that block, you made them significantly weaker. I totally get what you were thinking, but in this case and given the hardware you were using, it was incorrect.
First, the greatest strength of any screw is perpendicular to its mounting surface (shear strength), so it was actually much stronger mounted the way it originally was at the beginning of the video. Mounting it vertically the way you did would only be stronger if you used through-bolts and washers, but then again the whole assembly would still only be as strong as the shear strength of the screws used to attach the block of wood to the hull.
Second, it looks like you mounted the cable pulley blocks to the new block of wood by screwing into the end grain, which is the weakest possible screw attachment into any piece of wood. If you had rotated the block 90 degrees, the screws would have had much greater purchase as the wood fibers would have been running perpendicular to the screw. Still not as strong as they originally were (shear strength, as above), but better.
And to be clear, I'm not nit picking here or trying to be negative. I genuinely want your boat to be as strong and safe as possible, so we can see you both sailing and enjoying Yaba for many, many years go come. I've also been involved in woodworking for about the last 35 years, so I'm speaking from experience.

You made a mistake by moving the pulleys that were screwed 90 degrees from the tensile stress in the wall to only being screwed into a block of wood. The only thing that prevents them from loosening is the screws threaded into the wood. The tensile stress is now in the direction of the screws.

My concern is more practical; protecting this significant investment with insurance. It is one thing to "learn as you go" with some aspects of the build but the systems considered critical by the Surveyor and Insurance should not be left to amateur designs. I.E. steering and fuel storage/delivery. One thing to do it under supervision to learn, it is another to make things up as you go.😢
Have you thought of a strong fan to extract heat from the engine room and pumping in cool air from another fan into the engine room even if the engine is water cooled, another thing your rudder you should maybe add a 45 degree angle on the ruder edge pointing towards the propeller from 3 centimeters past the propeller from the bottom all the way up till 3 centimeters from the first connection point to the hull, that will help with little less drag on the rudder and make steering little easier when you turn basically cutting through the water, its optional
Would someone please tell me how they are going to keep water from entering the boat through the tubes for the cables? Does not seem like a water tight solution.

Been enjoying the restoration, and the adventure you’ve embarked on. With that said, I’d like to bring attention to the fact that no boats are made with a chain or pulley system for steering anymore. It’s because they fail. Everything is hydraulic, with rams. With a rudder the size of yours, I’d be terrified in heavy seas if it were counting on rope and pulleys to keep that rudder in place. If any of that fails, you’ll be in a life raft. Keep up the dream, but rethink that steering. There’s a reason nobody does that anymore.
