Written by Christopher Cross. It was a hit for him (1980). I like Rod's version also -from his Atlantic Crossings album.
I used to love the Gavin and Iain Sutherland (who later joined with Quiver and became known as the Quiverlands). They weren't too successful as far as the charts went but this was the early to mid-seventies and so they got played on rock radio because people were much more open to different music then.
The song is usually taken as being about someone sailing across the ocean to be reunited with the girl he left, but it wasn't that at all. One of the brothers, I can't remember which it was, said that it was about the spiritual journey through life to be reunited with God.
Iain died in 2019 unfortunately.
I aways loved this song.Listen to the Robin Trower Band doing this with the late,great James Dewar on vocals,you will enjoy their version of it.
