Air-conditioning works well because it does as it says. Conditions the air. By removing the moisture, the air temperature is easier altered. Similarly a dehumidifer helps in moist environments by removing the moisture thus enabling temp change easier. Water is 760 something times more dense than air so taking the moisture out reduces the density and temperature or condition more easily changes and doesnt allow the heavy moisture in the air to balance with ambient temperature.
Dry the air and everything will be better. ( careful too as heating air allows it to hold more moisture!)
I love that while Adam was gone you wasted no time to get a boat job done Viking Helga. Nice job. Very cool. You two are truly a team. Adam good luck to your dad. Hope all is well
Dry heat will help a lot with humidity…wood stove is best for me, takes the humidity right up the chimania..blessings…m
It expands, i remember.
Hope all goes well with your Dad's operation and a speedy recovery.
Hopefully all goes well with your Father Adam. Speedy recovery!
Get a dehumidifier.
Best wishes and hope things turn for the better soon.
Praying for your Dads quick and complete recovery, Adam.
Get yourself a two or three inch hole saw and drill a dozen or so holes in the decking under the bed, it will help keep things dryer and mold free. Something you can do while Adam is off, even though this is probably weeks old already.
Adam, I hope your dads doing fine. Khiara, smashing those boat jobs. Must be hard doing those and the vids whist fending of Scotsmen.
Groovy boat improvements on you boat. It is hard to believe that you have been sailing all over the world in such an old, outdated, poorly equipped vessel. You really do need a new boat. Don't you have any sugar daddy's that follow your channel? LOL!
💖4 the algorithm
I've bought a 240V de-humidifier that I am really really happy with. It is an Arida S3L, that keeps everything inside nice and dry. Just mentioning it since it's small and has wall mounts! There might be a 120V version out there as well, if you want to check it out.
Adam, hope all well with your dad.
Hope Adams Dad is ok… sending loads of love
Adam…i hope your Dad is ok. Kiera….total respect for your insulation work. Hope the job helps keep you warmer and drier inside. I agree with others …a dehumidifier would be a good investment..
Nicely done, Helga and best wishes to Adam's father.
I hope Adams dad is doing well😑
Great work Khiara, don’t know how you do it !
"Ob'n" as in a short sounding "bun", rather than ObAn! Welcome and best wishes. Hope all is well with Adam's Dad. Great channel guys.
Dont know the english term but a small de-humidifyer works really well when your in a harbor. Keeps moisture out.
you can only look and do small things that will fit in your bubble while time slips by
Wishing you only the best for your family Adam. Khiara, you are doing great with the upgrade. I agree with the comments regarding the dehumidifier. All the areas you cannot cover with insulation or even having a vapor barrier will induce mold and rot. Keep up the good work,. Cheers
Awsome episode… You are such a ray of sunshine in a damp cold boat… But – You must get a proper dehumidifier, heat will only evaporate it into the air, it will not lower the humidity level. Also get a Hydrometer Thermometer to keep track of the condition. Best to you and yours…
Cheers guys! And thanks Helga…😊
Helga?!?! No way!! Khiara is way more attractive and tougher. 😍Are you sure they didn't compare her to Lagertha?! That I would agree on! 😁
You are such a trooper 👩🏭
Please don't use that kind of open cell expanding foam. It will eventually absorb water and cause problems at a later date. Buy Soudal closed cell expanding foam which is water resistant.
There a product hyper vent you can put under the mattress to keep you dry
Use Soudal FlexiFoam G expanding foam
Can I pre-order a "Helga's boat repair and restoration" t-shirt?
I know its written Oban, but its pronounce Obin! 🙂
Look for GetRot or Varathane Wood Hardener to seal up and harden wood that has started to become compromised. Unfortunately you really need to dehumidify the boat and apply something like Concrobium Mold Control before applying the GetRot/Wood Hardener and installing the insulation or you can end up with black mold spores in the wood along with between the hull and the insulation. Paint due to the pigments has too many solids in it to offer sufficient protection against moisture getting underneath it and blistering it from behind.
I use to do emergency mold remediation and can't stress strongly enough the need to completely dry out the boat and kill off all existing mold spores that may be lying dormant inside before applying insulation of any kind.
If a mold blossom occurs afterwards you can be facing ripping even more out to clean it up if fogging with Mold Control and Treatment with an Ozone Generator doesn't work.
Now more importantly best wishes towards a positive outcome for Dad.
Best!
There's sailing around and then there's sailing around the world. Many get into the first and give up the second.
Am I the only one that thinks painting is not going to do much good at preventing water penetration and resulting wood rot if the end grain isn't sealed somehow too?
I hope this finds you and your families well. My thoughts are belatedly with your dad. Hoping for good news.
Great episode and a de humidifier will be a game changer . Before sailing South we lived aboard full time on Vancouver island and condensation and mold were daily battles until we got the biggest de humidifier we could fit down below .
Be careful with the expanding foam. It is not unknown for bowties to rupture their hull because the expanding foam had nowhere to go
Khiara, truly wishing you great success with insulating the forepeak, yoga mats should really help out in the colder climates. We installed a dehumidifier running off our solar panels and have a soapstone fireplace which drives out the dampness. With Adam in Australia we are praying his father's operation completed without complications.
Learn how to promounce the name of the town of Oban.
Hope your Da is doing well, so glad your are spending time in Scotland.
I'm so glad that my boat was already insulated when I bought her. She only weeps around the single-glazed metal window frames and I just live with that. I also have a coal-burning pot-belly stove to keep her toasty. My friend's boat was another storey – wooden superstructure, rotted on the outside needed a whole new outer skin. Some of the spray-on foam insulation was still OK, but oh yes, spraying on new stuff got quite messy at times! Too much? Almost every time!
Insulation is the right approach. If you can keep surfaces above the dew point they will not condensate, end of story
You always do an awesome job on your projects!! Very talented ❤
You probably know this by now, but oil-based paints don't dry. They cure. Temperature makes a difference, but basically you need UV light to get the paint to cure.
I used to work in a coal mine and am well aware of the dangers of explosive vapours. Gluing jobs like you have done needs all power switched off, hatches and windows open etc.
Best wishes for your father Adam, sincerely hope all goes well.
