Hi there lads! Good to see that your faithful old anchor has found a graceful retirement! May he RIP.
The replacement anchor certainly looks to be Man for the Job! However, I do have one little worry not about the anchor itself, but rather the installation. Sorry guys! The problem is probably all mine but here goes anyway….my question is; wouldn't it make more sense for the block of wood to be mounted UNDER the deck? Please hear me out – as it is, I can foresee a situation where the whole bloody lot is ripped off the deck because the block isn't doing the job intended for it. Everything is still dependent on the bolts hanging on just at the moment when they are most needed! I have noticed that you did anticipate the problem that I'm talking about by placing a couple of metal pieces under the nuts of the securing bolts that you're using BUT can you really have confidence in that order òf things?
You have 110kts. of hurricane outside the cabin doing its' damndest to break the mooring in any way that it can find + you're facing a lee shore composed of the meanest – looking rocks you have ever seen! If you wind up there it's going to end with 'closer thy God to thee '
I hope that you will accept my comments as they are intended; constructive suggestions for the benefit of your adventures for this and those to come!😊😂
Is it straight?😅
Congratulations on the new anchor ⚓️
Way to go boys! Nice anchor score!!! Cheers!
Fantastic, thanks for sharing lads!
Wait just a couple minutes the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car!!
We did exactly the same. After trying over and over to set our CQR in hard sand. We went and bought a 20 kilo Rocna. Not a problem since, except that a 20 is too good for a 33 foot boat, so getting us off the bottom was interesting. Read the instructions, and chains jump on gypsys when the chain is worn! Check that chain. Now we have 2 Rocnas. If only you were Home and Away fans. You can anchor just over the other side of their beach at 33.586356 S, 151.321915 E.
Why is the new anchor an improvement over the CQR we had CQRs for 30 years? It must be an improvement in technology I surmise!
Filing stainless is a huge pain in the ASS!!
It's going to be really funny if your new anchor drags on the first shot!!
Merry Christmas!
Looks great!!
Rocha good. Best bang for the buck. Not the best but 100X better than that %*(&*# CQR Plow! Great improvement all the was around. Good ground tackle is soooooo important.
OK I'm a believer!!
Any idea where you blokes might be at the end of March 2024?
So long as the block is well secured thats better. Atlas knew this and she helped you to do it better.
…..wheres the sealant on the bolts though?
well done 20k subs you look like your having the time of your lifes out there new zealand looks amazing too
We should start calling you the neighbours , Brothers lol
❤
You done a good job guys and as you said” looks better than you though 👌
RIP old anchor ,, you did the brothers well . 😌⚓⚓
Hi guys love seeing you carry out upgrades to Atlas while on your epic adventure Is there no jobs that you both can’t handle Stay Safe 🏴🏴
Looks pretty good.. but it’s soft wood and after a whip it will have absorbed enough water, then if you didn’t replace it for a good hard wood (or protected it with epoxy or used a hard construction plastic) it will be difficult to and one abrupt pull due to a wave can rip out the bolds the next one will pull could break the bolts through the deck.. so it looks great but it needs an update later on. Those bolds with a small plate aren’t going to stop it. I would str suggest to always use a snubber and later on replace the small rings for one large stainless backing plate.
Better do it before damage is done
Parlay Revival are circumnavigating NZ now as well! Hope you guys can meet up! Another great vid. Thanks!
Didn't see the sealing work. Did you do anything at the through-deck holes to prevent penetration by water into the deck's core or did you just rely on a lot of sealant (4300?, 5200?) between the block and the deck?
At 26'29" – is it a 15 kg anchor? (=~33lb)? I have a related Rocna anchor (Vulcan 15) on my 32' boat – very happy with it.
that be a drill for iron stuffy, not wood guys….lol
Use a square file to make the holes square in the bow roller fitting and the coach bolts will then be captive ! The will turn when you try to tighten the nuts if you don’t!
We have a fishing Jet Ski in North Carolina made by Sea Doo. It has lots of attachments made specifically for fishing.
That was some impressive DIY skills – and it looked straight!
As an addendum to fiberglassing the breast hook it's important to make sure that the deck is heavily glassed to the hull. Toodaloo
Looks like that Anchor will be a game changer for you guys. Did you put any sealer on the wood and bolts? To stop any water ingress. Well done guys neat job.
Slightly concerned about bow roller only being bolted only at the back? Any sideways leverage when the boat swings may cause an issue. Also think a backing pad of 18mm ply underneath, would help better to spread the load around the deck. But I am really happy for you guys living your dream.
I have done the same exact change on my anchors. I had the same cqr and changed to the same Rocna 15 kg and I'm so glad I did. I would though instead use a big backing plate instead of the 4 small ones on each bolt. Plus, support the anchor roller further front
Well done on the new anchor and roller system, you managed to do a fine job with very limited equipment. Now I'm waiting for the rightfull final resting pkace for the cqr ……burial at sea 😂😂😂
Great upgrade with the Anchor, can I suggest you make a wooden plate to go under the deck to effectively pinch the deck from both sides for the Bow Roller. The plates you show will not spread the forces sufficiently. Resin bond to either side of the deck for both plates for added strength and waterproofing, Resin line the holes for the bolts. Not a lot of extra work but a whole lot of peace of mind!!
You are shitting me nearly fell off my seat ,, you are at my club and thats my boat in the back ground on the mooring, wtf ,, how long ago was this ??
Considering how you often prefer to anchor I was always interested in how you were managing in practice with the CQR. I had a baby Rocna on my little 24ft Achilles – ok, perhaps overkill, but I was always securely anchored. They're great. My current boat came with a CQR and I have bought a larger Rocna for it too but need to fit a bow roller myself, so this was really useful to see how you did it. Many thanks.
If I was fitting that to my boat, I would be thinking of putting a piece of one inch ply, bonded underneath the deck, the shape of the bow, stretching about a foot from those bolts. Theres a possibility those small washers you've used could damage the deck in a stomach at anchor. Just something to consider 👍
So envious of you sailing in NZ, what a gorgeous place and lovely people!! But we have the Welsh Cheese Company…, I owe you a trip when you get back! 🧀⛵
Congrats. The likely problem with the CQR was the low weight. I think you would have done better with a 35 lb. You needed a heavier anchor anyway, so you have that with the new.
Nice! – QUESTION – Is there an episode that showes what you paid for the sailboat and what it cost to get it ready to sail around the world? Would love to learn the actual cost of this.
I would say that anker is definitely holding 😂😂😂
Hats! Well done. An essential.
