Adam you got a good un with Kiara, not many girls would crack on like that alone.
Khiara, my compliments to your idea of using cost effective yoga mats. Your understanding that the insulation needed to go on the outer wall above the ceiling goes above and beyond what a private contractor might do in their rush to empty your bank account and get to their next job.
Take it from a Canadian who just went through a -35C cold snap; you'll be thankful for any additional insulation you put in, cold weather or warm. The dehumidifier that you've installed is 100% the most critical thing to keeping yourself warm. Humidity = cold as you can't dry out. Adding in the heater will definitely help too. I'd also think about adding carpet to the floors for the cozy factor and any time you go out for an extended time, opening up cupboards and hatches to let the air circulate through there too (with the humidifier and heater going) which will help to avoid build up of moisture in confined areas. If your heating with propane, it causes a lot of condensation. Its a wet heat, when it burns causes moisture. Need a chinese diesel heater or electric.
Before I forget, I strongly recommend slats, not solid ply under mattresses. I had damp and mould under mine the first winter aboard. I replaced the boards with bog standard two by one planed pine, two inches apart. Problem gone!
This is my 8th British winter aboard now with my pot-belly stove for heating – no more damp anywhere except round the window frames. Just an inch of original expanded polystyrene insulation separates the steel outer skin from the inner pine – it works, but I think your insulation is safer as regards fire. You're doing an amazing job – crack on 🙂

Another couple of tricks … air the boat every morning; when you get out of bed, open the hatches/companionway for a good five minutes to blow out all that early morning dampness, amazing how much humidity two humans breath out overnight and … when cooking, ventilate the boat. Spent two winters liveaboard in UK 🙂
Kerrera looking very different to our visit back in July! Tesco supermarket had the cheapest diesel we've ever seen in UK but limited jerry cans to 40-litres max.

We used to live on the west coast of Scotland and now live in Yukon Canada. Yes, that was not real snow, but that cold wet stuff in Scotland goes right though you in a way that -30°C winds here just can't achieve.
That photo of the salon reminds me of one I took when I installed a hydronic diesel heater on my boat. It was like one of those puzzles with the sliding squares where one could be passed off the board to shuffle things around until the image was all lined up again. I'm happy now to have the heater, but man, it was pretty depressing when the boat looked like someone picked it up and shook it around and then set it back in the water. There wasn't a clean surface in site.

I suggest cut tight fitting but not bonded pieces of insulation to cover the steel fittings. That way it's still accessible for maintenancs. Insulation is one of those things where the least insulated section has a disproportionate effect on heat loss. Also, the coldest piece is where the condensation will continue to happen.

I think that foam will become a sticky mess after a couple of years. Monitor it because it will be a terrible job to remove if you leave it too long.
I believe your condensation problem is caused by two things one is you, humans in general expel H2O plus our heat doesn't help. Second is .. Heating with gas/ radiant heaters cause all kinds indoor rain!

Best thing I ever bought for my boat was the dehumidifier and I live in Queensland Australia. So can imagine how happy you are with yours.👍
Interesting that the dehumidifier nailed it. Rally enjoying these and lovely to see the changeable scottish winter featuring on a sailing channel … just one tiny thing to mention: the place you're staying is usually pronouced OH-bun, rather than oh-BANN. Be sure to take a trip all the way up Loch Etive before you leave the area!
Hi Guys, we have a Meaco DD8l, it works great. It took a couple of calls or Meaco service, we needed to put a small breather hole in the drain pipe.
You made life much harder than it needed to be. Winter on the South Coast or South West of the UK you would only have a few really cold days. Not consistent cold like in Scotland.
Try (Glava?) insulation mats over the deck with a tarp to hold them down. And if it snows, let it stay there as extra insulation… it helps.
I'm surprised you guys didn't sail to Greece or , even, the Canary Islands for the winter. Cruising should be a warm weather activity.

Not sure where you plan to go next but Bushpoint and Cadoha are both good channels for Ireland and England sailing respectively.

7:25 You are right to replace the rotten (ply)wood. The mold is not good for your health.
8:53 The problem is that you still have humidity in the air and still have cold points (which are just a little improvement from having cold surfaces) which cause condensation. The electric heater that you mentioned earlier heats and moves the air only in the center of your boat. The water vapour propagates to the sides and edges where the air does not move. Consider installing a diesel heating that will have conduits along the boat's boards, this moves the air better. At least it served me well here in Sweden.
