  1. Orcas are intelligent animals. Cruisers who try to hurt only make the general situation worse. They have learned that humans catch their livelihood. Thus, I have stopped buying canned tunas. Your banging methods are excellent. Cats do not like wrinkling with aluminum foils. My theory is that sounds that are not natural will scare orcas away. Cheers.

  2. I tip my hat to you for managing the HydroVane install from the dock, that shaft is beastly heavy. We are on the hard and working off a scaffold I was able to use a hydraulic jack to take the weight. A tip to others who may be planning a similar job: Rigid makes a cutter that will handle the stainless steel tubing with ease. It is a little beefier than the ones for copper but works the same and it is very reasonably priced.

  3. You've done it you've crested the topped YOU ARE NOW OLD it's all down here from now on. Shit will hurt more now. Soon Friday night sleep by 10 will become increasingly more attractive. Never trust a fart from now on. You will start liiking for restroom locations when you enter a new place. Shit like that welcome

  4. I have also heard about the orcas ripping off sailboat rudders.
It is my understanding researchers are trying to use noise to keep them away but the research is not complete.
I think the idea of making a strange noise with your pipes is as good as anything at this time.
    Good luck

  5. For the orcas, I haven't heard of anyone using m80s or cherry bombs, but that seems like an obvious solution. Nothing likes an unepected explosion close by

  6. Great install, Hydrovane, would be my choice of wind vane.
Hopefully all of you are over Covid, some people will have it for life, most have little after affects.
    Best wishes to all.

  7. That is a Masonry bit identifiable by the carbide tips being wider than the shaft for utilizing anchors. As for the Orcas, waterproof firecrackers, M80's, have been successfully employed as a deterrent – think very loud noise for an acoustic sensitive animal. We had plenty onboard for our passage but did not require them. There is a thought that playing loud "unpleasant" music through the hull may help as well but the only boat I know to do this was a Cat with the rudders in front of the Saildrive which is also a deterrent as it makes the risk higher for them. The biggest problem with them is they do not announce their presence until its too late. If you see a pod before they are close to the boat they most likely are not the pod doing the attack. The attacking pods quite literally approach from below and only when they "hit" do you realize you have company. The best advise I would give is have firecrackers with a cooking torch (the wind factor) for lighting them and exfil the area as fast as possible, the less time in contact with them the better your odds at reducing potential damage – even in reverse if you have a blade rudder as that would place the rudder in front of the prop.
