I really like that you mention the price of things. When you're cruising, it's always a consideration.
I'm on my third Simrad as well. Pretty sure they are designed to fail. Great when they work though.
Pelagic Autopilot should do the trick for ya!
Sam just wrap your autopilot in wrap & seal, it's clear and waterproof. By the way your not cheap you're careful.
I like knowing the price…. keep on keeping on!
Might do you some good to learn a little bit about troubleshooting and repairing small electronics like you auto pilot. It may come in handy for other things like your keyboard and other small electronics like you GPS stuff. How hard could it be?
I like it that you tell price of things love your videos
Love the prices! Please keep it up.
Hey Sam, great video man just wondering what do you cook your rice in does it come like that or you put it in a bag before you put it in the pot?
My last season on the 26'footer, I had a Simrad tiller steer – The TP-10. It was a great relief to finally be able to let go of the tiller to take a "P" or go below to get a cold drink or make a sandwich. I was very much in love with the thing. That said, there were 'problems' – mostly of my own creation. First, I should have gotten the TP-22 (for boats up to 39 feet). My boat was a 26-footer, and the TP-10 was 'recommended' for that size range (up to 32 foot). It's always a good idea to go with 'heavy-duty' and 'oversized,' and I'll likely be going with a TP-22 when I downsize from my steel schooner and refit my 26-footer as my "old man" boat. One of the things I notices about the TP-10 (or probably any tiller pilot) is how they can overheat if they're working hard in direct sunlight. Adding a Bimini top will cure most of that problem and be more comfortable for me in the cockpit, too. The other thing I notices is how hard the TP-10 had to work at making non-stop, continuous, rudder adjustments and I realized that my rudder post bushings were badly worn. Once I replaced those, the little tiller pilot was much happier. I haven't found one yet, but I'd like to have one that has a remote – wired or wireless, doesn't matter – so I can sit up forward on the cabin roof and steer around the minefields of crab pots that line the Chesapeake Bay during "crab season." which runs from April to December. I had no problems with my Simrad and will probably go with that brand again if I can't find anything better.
Keep mentioning prices. We like it.
I like you giving prices also.
Yeah, that AP has been sounding pretty bad lately. You have to cover the whole thing in a clear plastic bag. I use a bag from a flag set – long and skinny.
You can get waterproof covers for tiller-pilots for about £40 (GBP). Theyare not sealed at the bottom to let condensation out.
I value 100% your cheap Azz Sam because one day imma gonna be like you but with zero YouTube support Haha So the cheaper more affordable things are the longer I will be able to be a beach bum hobo loser hippy wacko doodle what ever you wanna call me just I want to live and love a basic simple low cost lifestyle as well within reason OFC Why work like crazy to pay for the other life that isn't that much better unless it is OFC something which I don't even know to begin with when you are used to be being broke as fuc den it isnt such a shock to the system
I was about to say "oh you should stop in Korcula when you're sailing back south" and then you ended the video there. Looked like a quiet night in town. When you do head back, there's a neat little island Bavljenac that looks like a thumbprint, basically an oval covered by stone walls. Would be a cool place to fly your drone. And if you look up "Fortification of Mljet", way at the northwest tip of the island there are military tunnels, one still with a cannon inside.
Agree, ALWAYS appreciate you sharing the cost of ANYTHING like slips, peppers, beers, all of it – so awesome you chose to go up the Adriatic, looks like such an adventure – BTW we are rocking the same hair right now lol – safe travels man
What was the name of the town with the purplish sky and gelato at the end?
Hell yes, keep telling us the costs, us , couch-sailors dreaming about this need to know !!!
You r the best, BTW …but be careful out there. Wish you the best
Sam, love your videos. I’ve heard Croatia is very crowded for cruising but I see few other boats in your recent posts. When we’re you there?
So, we’re just gonna keep ignoring the fact that Sam looks exactly like Kurt Cobain?
You look better with short hair 😻
100% on the prices. Keep telling us Sam!
Completely agree, mooring buoys make the WORST noise at night…
How much was that Spam? 😉 Don't change a thing mate!
I have had similar experiences with Simrad autopilots. I do not recommend them. On my Corbin 39, I added a Pelagic AP that piggybacks onto my Monitor windvane, the linear actuator substitutes for the vane. Pelagic also makes a tiller pilot version at about double the money of a Simrad. I wish I had known of this model when I was shopping for an AP for my Tanzer 22.
You didnt even consider sailing to Bosnia 😔
This is group that makes a Bluetooth autopilot. I made mine – costs about 25$ to make. Takes some effort to get it to work tho
I dig knowing the costs as well as your thoughts on the costs – as it puts it into perspective – what each place charges and if it was worth it. BUT if anyone is wondering how cheap Sam is…he once rowed ashore in a pre-lingonberry dinghy after anchoring in a busy Maui shipping port to cash in on a free birthday sandwich coupon. Respect.
You are literally sailing across oceans to other countries every dime matters.
Where's his GF? Is she hiding under the bed?
Mah-lo Mor-eh – little sea =)
Mljet is said to be the original Calypso island where she kept Odysseus trapped. Autopilot in Croatia- I don't understand the concept. That side of Adriatic is too littered with islands, rocks and traffic and don't see how anyone can afford to use it there. Also- it is good season to travel Croatia- I'm sure you will find replacement in some bigger town. Research history off these places- it will make you appreciate and enjoy so so much more. Almost every rock has a legend there. Zadar was raided by crusaders, St Donat church was made out of Roman square material, Sibenik has 4 forts to explore…
Keep mentioning prices. Cheap? Of course that’s your BRAND. You have sailed farther with shadier vessels than anyone on YouTube. My 20k passage miles give me perspective. You have taught me so much about how little one really needs to cross oceans. Not since Larry & Lin Pardy. You do frighten me at times Sam. Do you have a legit life raft? I think I know the answer.
I envy the experience you have that prompts you to sum up passing on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coats and Elephiti Islands, “I have seen these kinds of places so many times, I don’t need to stop”. After 3 chartering those waters I feel I could never get enough of that coast, that clear clean water and the food from the little family restaurant that populates every pretty cove.
Good video too short in the end
if you only had money for one autopilot would you buy the wind vane, or the electric one.
Are you sleeping in Sam? Waiting for new vid to come out. 😢
I love that you mention how much stuff costs
Dubrovnik is so cool and except for the freaking
stairs and steps !!
After 30 years of cruising and 1 simrad autopilot every 7 years i bought a Pelagic. 5 years on its much better than a simrad and appears more reliable and definately cheaper
mooring ball. can't u lift it out of the water. make it fast to ur boat?
Can you make a video on reefing a sail and what that entails?
