  1. Don't blame yourselves too bad. This error has been done many times before and will again. When I did my dayskipper our instructor forgot the depth sounder was not set with a keel offset and when we anchored overnight, we ran aground whilst anchor. It happens.

  2. Did someone already mention to always do a visual check of the anchor to check whether it dug in properly or not? Even after 2 days the boat can be still there only on the chain and an anchor with waterplants around it..

  3. More anchor always more anchor … I have seen this happen so many times …I’m in the charter business for over 20 yrs … the anchor chain does nothing in the locker … I don’t care what depth I’m in always put out more than I need !
    The good thing is you didn’t lose your boat !

  4. Take heart folks in that there were no injuries and the boat was recovered. Yes it was a nightmare situation but one you took on with experience and came through. Easy to say after the fact but do you think a stern anchor as well might have saved the day? You don't want an investment like that floating off into the deep blue. Cheers.

  5. As detailed below you need to add the height of the bow to your calculations to get the scope right along with the "school boy" error addition :). We've all been there! Don't beat yourself up. Also take into account any swell along with tidal height range. We purchased a new boat and the calibration on the chain counter was well out. Easy to recalibrate but you need to get the windlass circumference right for the 8mm chain you have (sound a bit light for your boat size IMO). Not sure if you have a counter or just colour tags on the chain. Pleased you are all safe and the boat returned to the anchorage.

  6. Wow. Tough couple of days! Don’t be too hard on yourselves. After being happily anchored for a couple of days in blustery conditions just about everyone would not be concerned or think much about the anchor set. Do you have a Sarca #5 or 6?
    As you might have gathered we have, or had as it just sold, a 1260 for the past 3-4 years. At the time we bought it Seawind only offered CQRs and Bruce anchors. I bought a Sarca Excel #6(30kgs) and shipped it to Vietnam where the factory modified it to fit the bow roller well. Actually to make sit in it a little better. With the 80m of chain and this anchor we never dragged(thankfully and probably very luckily) and slept very well each and every night we had the boat. For your own peace of mind I would suggest going up a size if you currently do have a #5. That extra 8kgs is worth a lot and is not much extra to have on board.
    Most importantly both of you and the boat are fine. Chit happens to all of us out there and what is most important is how we deal with those problems and resolve them. Seems like you both did very well. Congrats on that.
    We actually left our depth sounder with no adjustment and reading from the transducer which effectively gave us about a half a metre in the bank when navigating. We calculated scope very conservatively most often putting out 6/7-1 when possible.

  7. You mention chain but not the type or size of anchor? Most production boats have anchors that are too small – my boat came with a 25kg Rocna, which I dragged a few times, so upgraded to a 47kg. This has held me in >50kts of wind. The are sizing charts on the Rocna site, note the 50% extra for multihulls.

    I have an app called anchor pro, which I put on my iPad and it sends alarms via telegram to my phone if I’m off the boat. It’s brilliant. I use it on the boat too, and sleep so much better.

    The sand issue has happened to me too. Parked on a beach and a large ferry came by and the wake filled the tender. I used just the front davit to get the bow higher than the stern, opened the bung and used seawater to flush. Sand in the tender is bad in that it creates a very effective rubbing compound which destroys the join between the tube and the floor of the dingy

  10. Seems like you should have a GPS movement alarm where if triggered that the boat moves out of a geo fenced area it alerts you and turns on multiple large lights and alarms

  11. Incidents like this shake you out of complacency and remind you of the danger. But a real disaster (like losing the boat altogether) requires many wrong turns and it was good seamanship that got the boat back. And a good post-incident analysis is critical. All in, well done Theresa and Nick. Glad you're safe.
