  1. Another solid episode Trev. Fully agree. Daggers are more hassle than they are worth. Better to whack a log with a keel than the dagger or rudder.

  2. I don't know much about cat sailing but I have heard there may be some advantage to being able to lift the leeward daggerboard in a beam reach with seas on the beam. I realize it would take a hell of a lot of wind plus massive seas to flip a large cat over but do you think having a leeward keel make the boat a bit more likely to go over?

  3. Dagger boards, you better have a BIG bottle brush to clean the crap out of the dagger-board slots… and dagger-boards are easy to break…. I think you know all this…

  4. Well said, as far as it’s about production big cats for cruising. But that’s from a hulldesign point of view not the whole story: there are also deep V hulls that have neither daggerboards nor keels and still point well. Moreover, daggerboards compare more to deep narrow keels when it comes to steering and coursestability. But catamaran-keels give a easier course stability like longkeelers in monohulls. Overall: like you said: cruisers should be wise and go for comfort and safety and strength of keels instead of daggerboards.

  5. Great comparison: I have sailed on an HH55 for ~ 5 months on two occasions; it is carbon & fast, has dagger boards which I like but the hull noise in heavy weather is unnerving at times. Thanks for showing storage areas as folks often overlook this aspect…

  6. EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!!! video. what's your opinion of retractable keel/centetrboard(pivots into a well in hull)? SailingBarefootr Doctors are building 52 foot aluminum Portofino catamaran, with retractablr centerboards. (they agree with you re: daggerboards, especially for small crew situations………be Well!

  7. I'm always racing, whether anyone else knows it or not;😆but even with the polars in hand, I personally can't predict what the outcome of a particular scenario might be. It's very nice living on the edge…but not all the time. Give me those well designed keels on the Ballance every time. One thing I can predict; you will beat me and my Swan48 every time. Maybe. Plus, fishing from a mono hull really blows😆 Thanks for the great content Trevor.

  8. Great video- makes sense! I saw at around 8-10 minutes when close hauling the boat had Furuno instruments. Rare to see them these days on sailboats even though commercial guys seem to think Furuno is most robust. What do you think of Furuno for a cruising sailboat? For example vs B&G? Thanks!

  9. I was privileged to see Lyra Noa up close in Florida. Everything appeared as you stated. Simple elegant, so well squared away. I'd give plenty to sail one of these newer Balance catamarans. Enjoying the technical content.

  10. Thanks Trevor for this informed well thought out talk. The performance and daggerboard hype has definitely gone beyond practical common sense for many situations. For us, having circumnavigated, safety and rest offshore are priority #1

  11. Morning Trevor
Very good video again. The biggest thing is what ive seen I'm not a professional by a long shot to be honest, ive only sailed once. But ive watched this foiling cats and foiling , Mono hulls and the biggest thing i can see is that carbon foiling cats as in the Americas cup is speed as they top out at 40 + knots same as mono foiling hulls are only for racing as in the vondee globe. You couldn't live aboard as it's just not practical or possible. They sort of live on them but not in the same comfort that you have on lara the balance craft that your talking about. 👍🍻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
