  1. Possible Source: In humid environments where the temperature of a thermal mass such as the ship's hull and water resting in the bilge are cooled below the dew point, the humid air itself is more than sufficient to slowly add more water to the bilge.

Boats afloat in warmer waters well above the dew point temperature do not experience this, but boats afloat in cold water do experience this.

Did you not experience this while wintering over in Norway? Or did your bilge pump promptly dispatch any accumulation of water in the bilge without fanfare?

    Steps:

    1. If opening the through-hull solved your problem, then good!

    2. If you're still accumulating water, consider a… Never mind. I see you drilled the hole in the keel. That'll keep your bilge dry while on the hard.

Lowering Batteries and other heavy objects: Remember your climbing skills! Fashion a box wrap, tie the ends to a carabiner, then use a lowering line tied to a cleat, through the carabiner, back up to the deck, and wrapped once or twice around a winch. If the battery weighs 50 lbs, your lowering force will be, at most, just 25 lbs. For heavier loads, you can add carabiners top and bottom, reducing the force by ten times or more! It's how we used to lift V8 engines out of cars before working on them. 🙂

  2. You're pretty agile to climb on top of your truck from the side! Ever think about a career as a cat burgler? Uh, no. Of course not. No future in that!

Root-top boxes and carriers tend to walk away less when secured with screws to which Loctite (Red 271) has been applied to the threads. Red is the strong stuff, requiring both heat and hand tools to remove.

Hey! I've been to Milan! If fact, you're taking the same route through Switzerland I took back and forth between Kaiserslautern, GE and Torino, IT, back in 1996.

    Have fun!

  3. Good times 🎉 I have a fishing boat on a trailer. It had been raining a whole bunch. At midnight the bilge alarm went off . It is a repurposed car burglary alarm. Very loud. I was in the next town over at the time. The neighbor went to investigate. He thought someone was trying to steal the boat ha ha.

  4. I get the need to remove the water from the bilge. However, considering you found the source of the leak and corrected it, why not just pump it out once more? Why drill a hole in the boat for something that is not likely to happen again?

  5. Extremely impressed with Kika's Land Rover climbing abilities and luggage holder fixing! How many people would climb on to the roof of their car?

[Edit: it's great to read all the lovely comments under the video, too. A couple of trolls, as usual, trying to get attention, but the vast majority are super positive]

  6. So great to see You doing all this stuff alone Kika. Normally We’d be seeing Dan most of this kind of work and one could sometimes get the impression that You are “just” doing the camera and editing work which is not true at all. Love from Denmark❤

  7. How can water get into your keel from inside the boat if not via your keel bolts ? If salt water can get into a boat , big waves then into your bolts . It is a 1972 Person that is allot of time 52 years on equipment and allot of waves

  8. 10:50 – One of the many things that make this channel so good, are things like the attention to detail (just think how many times Kika had to stop where she was, climb up or down again, place the camera, record, cut, and then reverse it all again…. just to lower the battery! And they do that all the time! Walking or driving somewhere, camera placed up ahead, go back where they were and walk towards the camera, then past the camera, cut, and run back to get the camera; rinse and repeat several times. Each video becomes a “produced level” mini-film.

That aside, something I’ve noticed with Kika is her ability to get into the “gunk” when required. She is not a girlie-girl who doesn’t want to break a nail, or have a hair out of place. So a heavy battery to lower… she doesn’t run to find someone (a guy) who could handle it as many would; she develops a plan and executes it on her own. We’ve seen her many times working on her own, she is never the “damsel in distress”! Yet at the same time, she is definitely all woman and comes across feminine all the time! Some may not realize it, but that is a VERY RARE quality in 2024‼️
    🤠👍🏼☮️

  9. I admire you for being so capable Kika. Even when I was a young woman, I couldn’t do what you do. Keep going strong. You’re a shining example to young woman and proof that you don’t always need a man!

  10. I feel for you regarding the USA visa. It took our family 2.5 years to get our legal wife visa from Philippines. Really long. Or you could just swim across the river in TX, come to USA, get free room and board, free food and free healthcare, then in 3 years you can add your vote for getting more of the free stuff….

  11. Two product suggestions. First, most of the major tool companies make something called a "transfer pump". This is a battery powered pump that can basically be used to move water from just about anywhere. I have the Ryobi version, and I have found it useful for exactly the kind of thing you were dealing with. It uses standard 3/4" hose, so can be fed into very small spaces. It would have been a far better solution than drilling a hole!

2nd – There's a little compact ladder called the Extend & Climb. They make a number of different sizes, but the smallest (8.5') would probably really help you get stuff on and off your truck. And it's rated at 250lbs. The 12.5' would probably get you and off your boat in the yard. There are some cheap knockoffs as well. I have the 8.5' and also the 15.5' which is the equivalent of a regular 20' extension ladder. I've had both of them for many years and they are holding up well, requiring some WD40 around the tubes every couple of uses.

  12. Water always finds a way. We were delivering a bout from SoCal to San Francisco and the first real breeze was out of Santa Barbara. On starboard tack sea water was coming out under the port side galley. Took forever to find source, turned out the propane tanks were in the back half of the port cockpit locker with a forward bulkhead to make it a sealed compartment. At the bottom of the compartment a vent hole was installed to vent propane overboard should there be a leak. On a starboard tack the hole was below the waterline and the bottom of the compartment would take on water. Unfortunately the forward compartment bulkhead had separated slightly at the bottom allow water, and if there was a gas leak, propane, to enter the cabin. Really poor design.

  13. Lovely video, great detective work! Surprised that you went for drilling holes in the boat versus pumping it out though! Braver than me! Must have taken alot of climbing up and down the ladder to position and take all those shots. Great video!

  14. ❤ Oh my dog Kika! You are so incredibly adept at everything you do. And you look so beautiful as you do it. I cannot say enough about your filmography skills. Wow! You are so creative and meticulous in everything you do. As a young woman, I was very similar in that I went adventuring on my own a lot. Meaning camping and road trips. My inspirations came from my parents. You brought back many fond memories of when I was young. I thank you and cherish all of your videos.

  15. We love your channel. I have a question for you. Do you know what the original name and/or history of Uma was before you bought it? Our reason for asking is that my wife and I had our very first ever bareboat charter experience on a Pearson 36 out of Red Hook, St. Thomas on our honeymoon in 1980. As a result of that wonderful experience, we have bareboat chartered once or twice a year almost ever since. We got to wondering if it could possibly have been your boat. We've never owned a boat of our own, but we've sailed almost everywhere bareboat charters are available. We get to vicariously enjoy and experience our lifelong dream of taking off in our own boat through you. Thank you.

  16. great to see Uma again. While I enjoyed your trip on the big Cats… this is much more relatable to us normal people who are obsessed with elderly boats. (Landrover defenders as well)

  17. It just occurred to me that the new Pelican Cases on your roofrack are going to get pretty hot in the Sardinian sun.
Perhaps it would be worth considering an adhesive backed aluminium foil as an external reflective protection for them?
I suspect that your Starlink unit, as well as your other gear, won’t enjoy getting cooked.

  18. Watching this video of Kika being way too capable and sufficient off on her own I'm beginning to suspect that she's hiding something, like she was either a cat burglar or trained secret agent before meeting Dan. I mean, this globe-roaming boat thing they're doing would be the best cover story ever for her. Dan's still oblivious to this.
