1. Been there, done that! We went through the same thought process. Can we save the old one. We ended up putting a new one on from SL yachting. I am guessing you had to chase Steve. I spent my career as a project manager. Ordered my roerail well ahead of time so the delay wasn't critical. Did you have new holes positioned in between existing? Epoxy fill the old holes. We used Geocell Works to bed everything. Cheaper than sikaflex. Way better product. All our deck gear is fitted with it. No leaks. It's an MPS.

  2. Been watching you from port Hardy British Columbia. I'm a mechanic who wants to try sailing one day. I started watching, Uma, gbu, parlay and Florence. I find the boat building/refitting very interesting to watch. It's as interesting if not more interesting than the sailing. My wife and I spent a year rebuilding a 1979 searay power boat….bought it for 12000, when we were done the total bill was 95000. Boat work seems to take 3x longer than you estimate and 3x more expensive. But well worth it when you do the work yourself. Good luck.

  3. I would do what "Sail Life" and what "Uma" did. They glassed over the tow rail so there is No more leaks.
Ok until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! Cheers 🍻

I woul go check them out and see how they did it

  4. Hi there, I have an Oyster 485, with I think identical toe rail. Some nice chap in Germany "T" boned our yacht (Singapore Sling) and bent a section of toe rail. His insurance paid but getting hold of the toe rail was the issue. I spoke to Oyster and they sourced a replacement in the 40 ft sections. I'll try and find out who the company was… (I bet its the same stuff).

  5. Abstract

This video documentary follows the journey of a couple attempting to
repair and refit their sailboat, Florence, prior to embarking on
    future ambitious sailing adventures.

    Overview

    * Introduction: The video opens with the couple expressing regret at having started such a major renovation project but determined to see it through.
    * Background: They provide background on their search for a bluewater cruiser, ultimately finding Florence, which seemed ideal despite some looming problems. Years and considerable mileage later, those initial problems can no longer be ignored.
    * Location Shift: Knowing major repairs are required, they move Florence into a covered workspace to shield them from harsh winter weather.
    * Toe Rail Removal: With much effort, they dismantle the corroded toe rail, discovering significant leaks and hidden damage. The original goal was to salvage the toe rail, but they realize the extent of corrosion necessitates full replacement.
    * Deck Grip Removal: Due to widespread deterioration, they painstakingly remove the nonskid deck grip, another task far more laborious than anticipated. This exposes further damage to the underlying gel coat, requiring patching before repainting.

    Lessons Learned & Insights

    * Hindsight: Both major projects (toe rail & deck grip) turned out far more involved and time-consuming than initially expected. The couple wishes they'd either deferred the work entirely or taken a more aggressive approach (which would have been messier).
    * Deck Surface: Finding themselves with lots of gel coat repairs, they prepare to prep and paint the decks, hoping to get back on the water sooner.
    * Next Challenges: Despite the setbacks, receiving their new toe rail lifts their spirits. They now face the task of independently fitting the long piece of aluminum to the curve of Florence's deck.

  6. YEPPPPP!!!IT'S CALLED SAILING BUT THE WORST PART OF IT AND NOW THAT IT IS DONE ONE AS TO START THINKING OF DOING IT AGAIN FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD THAT'S BESIDE ALL THE OTHER STUFF OF A BOAT IT'S NOT ALL FUN WHO SAID IF IT FLOATS OR FLIES AVOID BUYING!!!! RENT!!!!

  7. To add to the helpful comments, I found a 'Sonic Crafter' or equivalent oscillating tool with a sharp scraper blade on it is brilliant to deal with SikaFlex or (in the US) 3M 4200 or 5200. I often have to replace the bow bumpers on the FJ and 420 racing dinghies, that has made that job easy instead of such a pain I would avoid it at all cost! The battery operated ones are nice for remote work. Sorry to be late with this helpful tip…

  8. For an old boat that needs major repairs such as yours, I wonder if all the effort and expense is really worth it. Wouldn't you be better off selling Florence and then buying a newer boat and outfit it for the Arctic?😮

  9. You are doing great work, keep at it.
Suggestion, I am not a sailor but followed Free Range Sailing during the refit of Marool, butal mastic was used for sealing decks etc, easy no mess. Bolt holes were over drilled, epoxied and metal inserts installed, these had the new bolts inside and no full penetrations needed.
Pascal and ? have moved to Free Range Homestead, so contact them for the facts.
Repairs always take more than you expected. Don’t give up.
    Rob H.

  10. Some of the extra work involved is a testament to how well Florence was built in the first place! She's a stout yacht that has taken you far and provided safety for you. Returning the love and caring is a good thing! She has lots and lots of miles to go! Carry on!

  11. Wow….an actual interesting & well narrated refit video. Your channel is by far is the most professional production on You Tube. A+++

  12. First, let me say how much I envy you that you can bend over on your knees for hour after hour. Ah…youth! I so admire you guys. Your courage and energy is so inspiring!

  13. Just wow have followed you two from probably your 10th video and this project has me feeling your pain. I know you two will get through it but sending positive vibes your way.

  14. Bravo, you had no others good solutions to get a boat without leak, and a safety deck. Now you know the time you need to get the good result. Next time, you think a time like this time, and you X 3. That’s simple. 😅😅😅😅 I had worked in my yard when I was younger, to do exactly that job. I was the boss and worked like you, too. I X 2 the time to reach the good result. You are right to change the aluminium rail, that’s the secure and simple way. We watch all your videos from 5 years and love them very much. Continue…. You are good sailors. Patrick and Sylvie, SV Croix du Sud . ❤

  15. Mammoth job but you are doing a fantastic job! And think of the reward at the end: she will not only look absolutely amazing, she will also be safe to sail around the artic!

  16. This is the price you pay for all those beautiful sunrises. Keep going guys! It won't be long and you'll be steaming north watching those beautiful sunrises/ sunsets once more! I can't wait ❤

  17. Got some 3.5mm aluminium half sections from a metal supplier in reading, on 2.4m lengths, you need a pillar drill to position new holes.maybe to toe rail has a curve in it
