Strange he mentioned the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary were built at John Browns. But didn't mention the QE2 which was built there. A ship I love, my dad built it. It was controversial at the time they were choosing the name, as Queen Elizabeth was not Queen Elizabeth II of Scotland, she was Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland. Anyway it's a hotel in Dubai now.
There was some talk of building a new Royal Yacht, paid for by private money. I think that idea scrapped ….
Hi, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I love the Royal Family and have watched most the the documentories played on TV There are many showing the fun and games they had on deck with their children, it is fabulous to watch. Maybe you could find some of those. Thank you for all you do x
I've been on it as my uncle booked it for his 60th birthday, (he's not short for a penny let's say), we got the tour, champagne reception, 5 course meal with different wine specifically selected for each course. They didn't show the ballroom upstairs where after the meal we had a ceilidh. Twas a good night.
Too expensive. That's the real reason. Just to expensive
It was retired because of the massive public tax it cost to run it. When the Queen decided to pay tax it was really beyond her budget. It’s a much better museum of mid century excellence. Yep, we visited and you should too.
That yacht and many other luxuries the royals have, forcibly paid for by the taxpayer. The royals are a legalised mafia!
I used to drive past it every day where it permanently sits now. Never had the urge to go on it. It's definitely iconic though and good to look at. The only way a new one will be built for the woke King Charles, is if they figure out how to power it with duracell batteries and windmills. In other words, not going to happen.
One thing you need to know about the queen. My mother toured Britannia and she said some of the cushions were slightly threadbare. The queen was known to be thrifty and didn't think you should be spending more than you need, and that goes for what the country was having to pay for. This is a fact and has been confirmed by many. So google it before you have an opinion.
It was decommissioned when the cost of keeping it running escalated to the point of where a total refit was needed to update the slow engines, & modernise the conference rooms, security wise, & the elaborate dining hall used for official meals.
Little was changed since 1954 (the year before I was dumped on my mum) But once it hit the news stands, the public got interested in on the pro’s & cons, as the government did.
I think in the end, Even though Queen Elizabeth II loved Britannia, she knew it was an expensive project to undertake, at the expense of the British tax payers. (It was used for official business trips throughout the commonwealth, (as well as a few holidays) But they wouldn’t need 200+ staff & a Royal Naval platoon to escort her, & cater to their every whim, when travelling abroad on a modern plane, or on the Queens Train carriage, within the UK!
So the consensus was, retire the old girl, reduce the cost of official travel, they’d also cut down costs further, by accepting the host countries generous offer to entertain her, & they could put on the lavish banquets, & put her up for the night instead!
And because the monarch is there to serve her people, the tax payers & the government were pleased with the final outcome!
RULE BRITANNIA, BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES… ,
(a link to one of our old patriotic songs.you may have heard it play on the Last Night of the Proms)
Also. Our old one penny piece, used to have Queen Elizabeth’s bust (head) on the front, & the seated female, on The back of the coin, holding the long trident sceptre (if I recall correctly) with the Union Jack flag flapping in the wind as the waves held her aloft! (I’m pretty sure of the description, but I think we lost them when we swapped our £pounds, shillings & pence, to decimalisation – losing 2pence on the shilling over night confusing the lot of us.
There was 12 old pence to an old shilling, then suddenly the new coin was only worth 10 pence. I think you get my drift. lol
This is why us Brits know we drive on the 'Right' side. Port side is left (we park on the left). When you mount a horse, it's from the left. The side stand of a motorcycle is on the left.
Do i need to go on 😂
Long time subscriber, great channel x
I used to live near Britannia at Leith (Edinburgh) but never toured it.
I would wear a life jacket!! In peach 🍑
My husband was a crew member (known as a yachty) when she departed Hong Kong in 1997 for her final voyage home. He was very proud of serve the late Queen and her family. He had an ‘encore’ from them once for a performance in the sods opera and socialised with several members of the royal family when they popped in to visit the crew in their respective messes.
Great video, loved the outfits, very in keeping and always love videos about Queen Elizabeth. And great to see inside
Been in Edinburgh 12 years and haven'tgot around to this
From Wikipedia:
"The port side of a boat is the left-hand side of the vessel when you are facing the bow (front) of the boat. It is called a port because it was historically the side where boats would dock at ports and the name has stuck ever since! In contrast, the starboard side is the right-hand side of the boat when facing the bow."
eqasy way to remember 4 letters in port and left so starboard is right
Port is left. Starboard is Right.
The Queen's sun lounge on Britannia looks like it has a boxing ring at the far end (!?!) Nothing made long journeys by sea a little more bearable than having demonstrations of pugilism that Her Maj could watch during the quieter, mid-ocean moments! 😄
"left or right on this picture" – That hardly helps does it? Because we have no idea whether the camera is facing the front (bow) or the stern (back) – information you really need, to determine which side is port (left) or starboard (right)
There's a little confusion during the video's opening moments. The guy presenting describes Britannia as "Queen Elizabeth's second Royal Yacht" but I think he was meant to say "Queen Elizabeth the Second's Royal Yacht" – I'm pretty certain she only ever had one!
And he describes it as "HMS Britannia" – it isn't/wasn't – it is/was "HMY Britannia" – It says so on the lifebelt cover behind him!
I remember when I was about 7 and 10-years-old the Royal Yacht Britannia sailed up the Dunedin Harbour in New Zealand we got to have some time off school because the ship actually sailed past our school.
the only way i remember portside being on the left is i will hold my glass of port in my left hand, leaving me my right hand free to eat my chip butty with.
I am not a royalist, but even I understood the value of it for trade and diplomacy, I think Blair ultimately regretted its decommissioning. Litte factoid, this was the last Royal Navy ship that was fitted with hammocks for the crew. Excellent as ever ladies, keep up the good work. 👍
The reason it was retired was that it would have been too expensive to keep it in service.
There have been 83 Royal yachts over hundreds of years some very spectacular. The last Royal yacht in the video now has a tea room for visitors. It is a great museum and definitely worth visiting. Love the show!
There’s no RED PORT LEFT in the bottle
Have you checked out the Scilly Isles? Pronounced silly! They are a group of islands off the south west of Cornwall. The Gulf Stream makes them sub tropical and they are beautiful. Also nearer France are the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey and some others. They are British despite being very close to France. They are bigger than the scilly isles but not massively so and get busier. Regular ferries and flights travel to and from France which is a short journey.
Our late Queen should have received a new yacht
Although it was called the royal yacht it was used to promote the U K globally and it was an idiotic political decision to decommission her.
When her late Majesty went on the Royal Yacht in Edinburgh she cried over the state her beloved yacht was in!! As HMRY was docked in Leith Port her maintenance cost was proved to be too much for Edinburgh council and she was far from her best, and has not got any better.
What must be remembered is that she never sailed on her own. She was always escorted by at least one Royal Navy warship for obvious security reasons, further pushing up costs. Air travel in those days was also uncommon, not terribly fast, and somewhat risky by comparison, whereas now it’s far safer, quicker, and more economical that a yacht + warship.
It was a floating palace, sadly not replaced.
I visited the yacht some years ago and it’s much more homely than it looks. The Queen cried when it was decommissioned. I hope you get to go ❤ 🇬🇧
I know the dirty version of Rule Britannia. 😂😂🇬🇧
The Royal Yacht Britannia was done away with, due to the cost. Her Majesty LOVED THAT Yacht. If you see any pictures of her when it was being taken away. You’ll understand what it made too her. I worked for a while, a young chap that actually worked on the Royal Yacht . They’re only allowed to walk round in socks. Cos Her Majesty didn’t want the noise. She LOVED 🥰 THAT BOAT. ❤❤❤❤🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧
Yes and the British government paid for it all.
Britannia was retired due to she needed to be overhauled and the Government when Tony Blair was PM said that if she changer the name they would pay for it, the Queen said no as she wasn’t political. So all of a sudden they wasn’t the money to it. Yet with everything the yacht did travelled and was use as a medical ship in was time she paid for herself and worked out cheeper.
As Britain is permanently broke, it was decided by the miserable penny pinching government they were going to pay for the necessary repairs.
By the way Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory are likely to be banned to appease the woke community.
It’s such a shame as the Britannia was a beautiful ship but that means nothing to politicians.
I think the Land Rover was pre 1963
When I first started working in a restaurant, my manager was actually a cook on HMS Britannia during his naval service. His claim to fame lol
I’ve toured this a couple of times, enjoyable trip to check it out but not as extravagant as you’d initially expect from a royal family
HI Guys Dont forget to see Eurovision 🙂👍🏻🇸🇪
Hi Natasha & Debbie (show) I know you like to see beautiful places, well one place that very few people outside of the British Islands have ever heard of are 'The Isles of Scilly' .. (NOT the Silly Isles 😡). They are a collection of more than 140 Islands about 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall. Only 5 of the Islands are inhabited, the largest is St.Mary's (Capital is Hugh Town) Tresco, Bryher (the prettiest), St.Martin's and St.Agnes. The population is around 2,300. It is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
A shout out to 'When Adventures Knox' – Isles of Scilly Adventures + Must see attractions – Top 10. You will absolutely Love it, and it's part of England 🙂
