You are doing great with your welding…it definitely takes time to get really good at "stacking dimes", it's an art. Welding is a great skill to have, especially on a boat when there's always something breaking or something that needs to be fabricated. Good job… getting close to spash day.

Very good welds. I’d be happy with those. Now all you need to do is to learn how to use what we call the “cut and fold” system, and you can build anything. Well done. The cut and fold system is about using the people with Laser Cutting and CNC Folding. To access this you need to use CAD design on your on board computer. The best one is Sharp3D as this will run your iPad Pro, and not cost too much to maintain. With the iPad Pro you can do your design work laying in bed while sailing. You’ll be totally liberated when you pull that all together. If you don’t want to learn the CAD straight away, I’m happy to do that for you. Send a sketch with dimensions and I’ll send you back a STEP File to send to the Laser cutter. Most big cities will have a business that does this. For instance if you were in Sydney you might use Opie Group.
Impressive welding. My attempts, years ago was when there were no self darkening helmets and scratch start. Did you get any "sun burn" on the arms from the arc?
Cracks. What ever you do in terms of repair, they will grow, unless you can take the stress off. So what you have done already will help and those two additional bolts will too. That may arrest them but time will tell. Welding them up usually does not work long term but drilling a small hole just in front of the crack often does.
The UV from the arc is deadly, need to have your skin covered.
There is a 46 ft ferro cement boat cheap, if the hull is sound are they worth having? I presume they need a fair bit of wind to sail because of the weight.

Lee, I watched my father weld for 50+ years and might I say you did fantastic! Always remember, a crescent moon is a good weld. Very well done!!!
you could have drilled a 2mm hole right on the end of the crack to stop its progression. maybe even run a weld with out filler rod over the crack. but i am sure its all fitted now. great weld for first time mate.
It's great that Lee is putting all his energy in getting the boat ready to cross the Pacific. It's a long time for drinks between Mexico and the Pacific islands .

thanks for the vid, I'd give Lee a 98 I've been welding since my grandfather taught me at 10 years old and it will definitely hold. Some cracks you can drill a small hole at the end of a crack and weld it and it's over. That must have been hard to leave but mama needs her space sometimes and I'm sure you had a great trip
Could someone talk to me about the type of welder he needed to use for that type of quality ? I have a cheaper welder but I know little about them.

Just got done binge watching from the beginning. Y'all have had quite the adventure. I'm glad you had the chance to drop by Seattle. The Pacific Northwest is an amazing place to visit. There is also a fair bit of beautiful islands to go sailing around here as well. If you ever make it back up here, and on a boat, take some time to explore the islands. Yes the water is cold and not quite as blue as a lot of people are seeking but the water has its own forests that it hides. There is good fishing as well. We may not have lobsters (or as you call them prawns) we do have crabs. Along with a whole host of other shell fish. If you do bring Catalpa II up here just keep in mind that the water is deep and the tidal swing is huge. So a lot of anchor chain and some good passage planning would be a good idea.
Well think I have rambled on long enough. The yard work is almost over and you will be back in the water before you know it. Fair winds and following seas when you do.
I have to say with 30 years of welding for your first run on welding i say great job and keep it up. Be proud i have worked with people that had there papers lol that you would put them to shame with your welds
