Great video. When you're hove to with no backed genoa is there any risk the boat would go through the wind and end up on the opposite tack? Is Atlas that stable with just the main?

Great episode (again). Personally I find that when I am struggling to think what I could eat, sausages always come to mind. There are so many varieties of sausages that I think they should be as much appreciated as wine is. Travelling the world in the slow lane as you are should give you so many opportunities to try different sausages. Take up the challenge – tell us about Kiwi (and Aussie) sausages.

Is it merely a question of balance? Is the boat surging more, falling off and steering itself up, when hove to on just the main? Would you drift slower with a backed staysail?

That wasn't bad for that area particularly fairly close in to shore. Often better alot further offshore. Half the issue is you totally underestimated how far it is, assuming you were wanting to stop. And what you are calling bad storms is just normal conditions for nz.

Great sail. Think about installing a between the Genoa and the mast a smaller stay sail. (With hanks cheaper). Put a small Genoa or a jib. Use both genoas. When to much wind reaff by rolling all in the Genoa and leaving the small Genoa. Then the boat up wind will be more balanced and efficient. The smaller Genoa will be lower in the boat and closer to the mast (main sail). Cutter rig. For offshore is wonderful as a half rolled Genoa does not work well with these conditions. ( I am saying as I am doing to my boat too). 💪💪

That Wairarapa coast is a difficult place to be in West or Norwest conditions, it can and does break boats. Katabatic of the hills. Thus far all good. You have had what can be expected down there. Easterly into Wellington? Beauty. You've cracked it boys.

I hope I make it to Christchurch when I sail from here in Europe to there sometime in the next few years. I grew up in Christchurch and for years now it's been my dream to when I return home to do it by sailing into Lyttelton Harbour instead of flying into the Airport.
