9. These Mediterranean storms are unpredictable and rarely happen this time of year and therefore hard to plan for both for insurance purposes and yacht owners. By all accounts this storm was forecasted and boats made allowances, however, the "cold drop" made winds unpredictable and switched 180° and hence caused an onshore and caught a lot of people out. It's completely different to the Caribbean "predictable" seasons

    Just a point about the storm, I was in Mallorca during the incident, holed up in a marina before it struck.
    DANA is not the name of the storm. It's a spanish meteorological term.
    It translates to isolated high level depression. They occur several times a year, lately. Just so it's not misinterpreted. 😉

16. I got a brand new storm jib for stuff like that because it's too much force on the anchor when you could just be heaving to.

27. Growing up I lived through 2 hurricanes while living in Virginia. Damage was pretty extensive. This was in the 60's.

35. Apparently the people who buy these yachts ask the following…
    How tall is the mast?
    How fast is it?
    How much does it cost? And
    Is it black?
    … I May sound jealous but I can assure I'm not.
    When you're really rich nothing has value. By default. It's never enough.

36. People who park themselves right next to the Shoreline in a massive Storm or even a minor one are simply not that bright and now apparently are deceased as well. This is what happens when all the money be spent on the Boat and NOT the Harbor/parking space. The only safe space from a Gale or Squall is ON LAND unless your vessel of choice be a nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier I imagine…or Submarine actually. This storm(s) in Europe remain the ULTIMATE shout out to why the Gulf of Sidra needs where be modern Mediterranean indeed Global Yachting needs to be as the sheer number of vessels now plus sheer size makes for very few places for such material to safely "stay" (be stayed/lay at anchored/Moor'ed etc) this being the only major massive potential anchorage I can think of in the Mediterranean Sea anyways. Plus clean sheet as well doesn't get any better. The only comparable one I can think of which of course isn't in the Caribbean is Haiti and isn't this way for security reasons of course as with Gulf of Sidra but also as well not clean sheet there. I think all of this is why the Country of Panama continues to boom. Anchorages along the North America Eastern Seaboard basically are infinite but the safest are in the Chesapeake Bay up in the direction of Baltimore. West Coast North America is basically infinite where available as well all the way into Canada absolutely. Plus all of the fuel infrastructure is there now/true for both. Problem with North America West Coast pretty much the middle of nowhere as far as Boating goes. Everything is basically a thousand miles away there. A sailing Yacht of this type would have fit in well there actually as you really need to get on to get anywhere out there #shipping_news

37. About the bayesian 183 that sank and killed 2 people. Do I have any chances of making it on a cape dory 28 in those kind of storms or if I find myself into one it's just over for me?
