  1. I had a similar experience and did the same. Give it up and walk away. I feel your pain but glad you have found peace and are able to move forward.

  2. Is it salvage or savage? Thanks Mr. Hillbilly for the update. I am so so sorry. You are too nice of a person for this to happen to. Taking advantage, just because you can, does not mean you should. Reminds me of the credit card companies that will charge 29.99% because the government said they are not allowed to charge 30% because that is taking advantage of people.

Will stick with you because you are an incredible human being that has extended so much kindness and generosity to others. You are a hoot and a blast to watch enjoying yourself and can't wait to see the next adventures. Really seriously big hugs to you sir.

  3. When marinas catch fire you see the real salvage hawks come out. If I claim salvage and untie and move your boat away from harm I could receive the same 20% from your insurance company for preventing a loss. That’s hundreds of thousands for 5 minutes of work and a little danger.

  4. So sorry your dream turned into a nightmare. Thank goodness you weren’t injured or killed when you tried saving the boat. Would you ever consider buying a boat again or are you now “charter for life”?

  5. I thought you were just hiring a company to do some temporary patches and tow the boat off of the beach and to a marina. At what point does “salvage” kick in and you lose all of your rights?

At least you have been able to move on, for the most part, and have been on a new adventure. Hope you are both feeling better

  6. You might want to see and speak to the bearfoot doctors on this topic.. theirs burnt down and took an identical Leopard cat at the same dock whilst in storage. They were at home in Astralia the boat was in the US.

  7. So sad for your loss
That insurance company is not accepted in some marinas here in Australia for not paying out on claims when i sell my boat i wont be getting an other one

  8. Your story saddens me! I hope you get to a place of happiness that Wandering Hillbilly gave you! BTW can't wait for the new season of "The Voice"! God Bless!

  9. Man, unbelievable, can't accept after the wreck you had to give away your boat and still had set you back 170k wtf

  10. Thanks for sharing your story with us really eye opening. Helping so many people make the best decisions even now. Good man Alan thank you.

  11. This is heartbreaking. You have taken the high road and I commend you for that. Let the legal system work for you if there is any chance it can. The love of yachting will come back to you and we will again see you and your family soaking up the sun and libations in the BVI. Good luck to you sir, wish I could do something to help.

  12. Very sorry for your situation. Your yacht insurance policy was not worth the paper it was written on. But, did this come as a surprise? How much due diligence was done when you purchased the insurance? Did your insurance broker advise you that Edward Williams/ Ion Insurance is an UNRATED COMPANY domiciled in Pago Pago American Samoa? Hopefully your legal counsel is well versed in marine insurance matters, including the fiduciary obligations and professional liabilities of the placing broker.

  13. The commercial world always rate us, if we aren’t up to scratch we get put on a black list. About time we had a blacklist for bad faith or poorly operated insurance companies, banks and landlords. Looking for google reviews is one thing but having one data base to check before we commit could get these crooks operating a bit better.

  14. Wow, what a painful educational experience. Its hard to believe what you had to go through after the loss of your beautiful boat. Having just learned how to sail recently and newly retired, I was so looking forward to making a boat purchase in the future. This video series should be mandatory viewing for anyone even thinking about buying a boat. If I do ever buy a boat it will be for a boat price that I won't have any issue just walking away from if things go sideway. Thank you for sharing this experience. New subscriber!

  15. My heart is broken for you. I know what a responsible boat owner you are. I have heard so many nightmare stories about boat insurance (insurance in general for anything) denying the claim. We are just about to receive a leopard 42 and will be reading the policy in depth. Any chance you will be making an Insuance video so we can learn from your experience. We watched your bvi charter video Before our first charter and it was so helpful. I know your life will continue to be full of joy but this one would hurt for sure.

  16. This really sucks to hear what you have been through. We missed you not being in the BVI this summer as we were boating for 2 weeks. We saw many of our favorites… Foxy and Drake (Rum Runner) but were hoping to have a drink with you too.

  17. Thanks for sharing. This helps the thought process of some reasons not to purchase a yacht to sit in foreign countries. If I want to make some of these trips I’ll just pay the money for a couple weeks. Rough lessons at sea! Maritime laws are brutal!

  18. This is awful, sure a sad story. But I don’t get why being so kind to the specific salvage company – they don’t have to follow what the law can allow, they can do what they want and charge accordingly.

  19. I do salvage work on the midcoast In Maine. Usually, I contact the insurance company before I salvage the vessel and get them to sign off on a price. If not, I want payment upfront and the pay will work out with the Capt owner. Once I put a line on your vessel, I am responsible for it if it is leaking fuel into the water, I could be fined. we do everything we can to contain the mass and the environmental impact that these vessels cause sometimes this work is rough diving boating, rough conditions and you’re never guaranteed to get paid. Usually, we are entitled up to 25% of the value of the vessel. but most of the time we settle with the insurance company for a 15 to 20% pay off

  20. Wow, wow wow wow. I fell on your channel by total accident (no pun intended) and as a ex- sailboat owner I was dumbfounded and so hurt by your story. My goodness, the video you produced is a very real and true vid. Glad you loved our Western rail trip, cheers.

  21. should have walked away from the boat the minute it grounded and left your insurance company to sort it out. yanking it off the beach was a mistake.
