  1. Hay Kristen I would not fire Mat he works way to hard to replace a standard flogging would do. normally you would lash him to the mast for this but seeing your on land any tree should be ok. Wait till he finishes the deck before the flogging.

  2. Look guys , The thing is before the use of joist hangers they built ledges to support joist , blocking/bracing to stop them twisting was essential. Decks were also not built of pressure treated lumber so did it rot before or after the structure gave way.
Ultimately this is only a deck with light loading and not going to have heavy static loads like interiors of houses. This is the GBU way and look what they have got away with to get where they are …..
Honestly it would have been easier to use joist hangers and gone for wider spacing from 12” oc and cost the same …..

  3. Nice deck Matt, I would suggest you add at least a 2 x 6 each side of the outboard 4 x 4 posts to carry the load of the deck down to the ground. Now you are relying the 2 x on the outboard side to carry the entire load. That is normally a trim piece rather than a support. If it fails the deck is going down. That way your big deck will be strong too.

  4. For future reference throw a few 16 penny nails or bolts in the side of your post, under the soil line, leaving an inch or so exposed before filling with concrete, stopping any slippage of the post.

  5. Wake up one morning and step outside and scream and when she says what's going on you say baby I stepped outside and stepped on my big deck

  6. seeing how close to the, clay kinda earth, edge of the hill you are there, I really hope there will not be a washout at some time down the line. Making deep anchors for the posts is a good thing there.

  7. seeing all this really awesome work you have done, and you really deserve a "bow my head" for that, I might have missed a part and, thus, am wondering if after all this deck work would you still be able to pull out the camper if needed, without having to demolish anything? I am thinking about emergency, time is of essence, kinda situation
