About Cpt. Gray: Thank you for elaborating on her long and multiple role career. But: Questioning the captains abilities and maybe questionable circumstances how he/she got there is quite common on occasions where his/her/it abilities – or rather partially missing abilities – could have been crucial to the accident happening in the first place. And that often raises questions, how that person came to the position while having obvious flaws that should have been able to be spotted in subordiate positons on suitable occasions. Leaving them on subordinate positions.
A male example where I absolutely think its a disgrace, how he got to the capatains chair fo that particular vessel: Captain Schettino of the Costa Concordia. He was completely useless as a captain after they struck the rock, and I absolutely question how a ego driven, no guilt accepting, delusional person got captain of a vessel, carrying thousands of passengers aboard. 99,99% of ship captains around the world would have been better suited, but maybe weren't as presentable and bumbeling through as he was. I think he was less guilty of that near catastrophy than the persons that elevated him there. Let's not forget: He seemingly was sorrounded by almost similar unfit officers as well ! I think there was a whole malpractice behind – and so I think a long career and duty record alone sometimes is not sufficent in that day and age, where elevating to be a capain can be based of rather questionable reasons.
Unfortunately I don't speak Italian and couldn't really get past the first few pages to watch the Italian TV content. That aside the video you show is really poor quality that the past few versions of a GoPro would have far better. Perhaps the Italian TV content is better?
Given the opportunity I'd love to have the opportunity to dive and photograph the wreck before it is raised.
With regards to HMNZS ship, will they salvage the vessel or will it be left as an artificial reef, presumably after salvaging bits and removing fuel / oil etc?
Good comments about the Capt. Far to early and far to little information to speculate about how or why the ship grounded.
As for the Capt's experience, CV sounds reasonable.
First appointment?
Actually This makes me wonder about the previous appointment. Not hers, the person she replaced.
Why she was appointed? Shouldn't be the question at this point.
Apart from the unanswered questions re loss of power ect.
It takes an entire bridge team to screw up. Even if the Capt. was physically on the bridge.
If Navigational error of some kind was made. It should be spotted and corrected by the Bridge team.
So even though it is far to early and there is no information available yet.
If I was placing bet. My money would be on.
Bridge resource management.
Two US Destroyers and a Norwegian Destroyer. All three terrible Bridge Resource Management.
Yes somebody made a mistake. Not the point. All humans make mistakes. Even Captains.
The point is the mistakes which go unquestioned or unnoticed are the problems.
So it is a systemic failure not a single individuals failure. Although a particular individual may have made a critical error.
Almost certainly several individuals should have spotted the error.
Quite probably, At least one relatively junior person probably thought something was odd but did not speak up.
Systemic failure.
Result of training failures.
Result of Policy Failure.
The root cause. Quite possibly not even on board the ship.
Some of the best people make some of the worst mistakes.
In possible defence of this particular Capt. She was "The New Capt". So she inherited the system culture and training which existed before she got there.
I'm a Grumpy old fart.
I am proud to say 8 women who worked with me. Went on to become well regarded and respected Captains.
Some other women for a variety of reasons chose not to so far.
I saw more than one good young officer, transfer to another vessel or get promoted and be literally destroyed by the prejudices of others.
When I came up through the ranks, most of my mistakes went unnoticed beyond the moment. Meanwhile for some of the first women coming up through the ranks. Every little error was broadcast far and wide.
Its not easy to be one of the first women.
So give her a break or at least the benefit of the doubt.
If she had been a man it would have probably been worse
very interesting.
Good job pointing out the idiocy of the sexist-homophobic comments.
Comment section is AI. Humans have turned into AI, no individual thought
Just going to say how many people are still living in the middle ages over same-sex marriages
Can you open the side door from the outside? Wouldn’t that be dangerous, tempting for a criminal?
DEI hire is all you need to hear before tuning someone out for being a moron.
Anyone who says someone is a diversity hire is a bigot. If that upsets you, then you're a bigot too. People who make these accusations never know what the actual qualifications for the job are, and never take the time to research the persons actual qualifications. Every time you do look at the persons qualifications, they are always well qualified. As you pointed out as well, whenever a straight, white, Cis male is in this situation, those same people NEVER question his qualifications. His qualifications are always assumed to be suitable for the job. These criticism are always and entirely based on ignorant bigotry.
The reason people are questioning the NZ captain is because she was pushed in NZ PR as a lesbian captain. There is a terrible legacy of virtue-signalling diversity hires being catastrophic. Google "female firefighters start forest fire" or the Gray Ivy League plagiarism, or the recent case of millions of dollars of damages being given to women and black people because they couldn't pass basic numeracy and literacy tasks for police officers. This is the true danger of virtue-signalling diversity hires, from physical jobs to academia… when a genuine candidate DOES get through it's difficult to tell if they're a genuine candidate or someone who has gained unearned promotion. The NZ captain might have earned her stripes, okay true. But so to and equally corporations, academia, the civil service, media, etc., are also looking to push diversity hires above more experienced people.
Asking the wrong question… question should be: is there dei diversity hiring in government. If the answer is yes, and is yes, then it tracks to question competence.
Nearly all ships that have sunk have had male captains, but apparently the most smooth brained among us are ignoring the facts
The reason no one questions when it's a straight white male is because there is no push by leftist extremist to hire straight white males into positions of authority. There certainly is a push to hire gay, lesbian and nonwhite people into positions of authority by left wing extremists such as the current U.S. of A. administration. Why these leftist extremists think that a women who has sex with another women instead of a man or a man that has sex with another man instead of a women makes them more capable of doing a particular job is baffling. But they certainly are hiring on that basis, such as the current U.S. Dept. of Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigege. He has been put in charge of the FAA as well other very important parts of the transportation system simply because of who he sleeps with at night and no other reason.
We live in troubling times. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the marine industry with us.
Of course you’re not responsible, but this is lousy footage to the point of it being deliberately showing nothing! Anybody with a camera going down there or a drone by itself would cover the entire ship in more detail rather than showing one view pretty much out of focus and providing absolutely no useful information. In fact, the footage would’ve been better left unreleased!
Thank you for being a voice of reason and for always looking at the facts, no matter what the issue! Some people are always going to rush to judgement to defend their own hateful or craven worldview.
Големи хвалби за качествата на капитана! Нооо, яхтата потъна! Хора умряха!
Sad about the continued commenting w.r.t. DEI. Diversity recruitment is simply "conscious and planned efforts organisations make to ensure their employee numbers reflect a better match with societal and demographic changes". No one commenting here seems to understand the normalising of the odds stacked against so many potential employees due to old standing societal biases. Govt policy is to ensure people outside of this "1800's selection norm" are not overlooked during the interview process. It is not a policy demanding diversity be recruited above merit. Interview panels hold huge responsibility. So in the case of the sunk HMNZS Manawanui, the investigation will review credentials and if they fall short, questions will be asked of the selection process. Simply put… it's not in the interest of anyone for the selection process to hire on anything other than merit as it will come back to haunt you.
Will be worth salvaging this yacht?
The NZ navy made a public effort to fly pride flags and brag about promotion of homosexuals to positions of command. The question is whether better qualified people were passed over so the NZ navy could earn diversity points. Stop twisting the issue around. The Basyian owners and the firm who crewed her did not go on a pr campaign to brag about preferring anyone who fits the minority/queer boxes. Therefore no reason exists to suspect the Bayesian captain was a diversity hire. Your claim that critics, by definition, are sexist makes no sense. Are you afraid of loosing sponsors by failing to tow the DEI line?
In 1982, two female officers were place on our USN ship during a North Atlantic cruise for a couple of months. One hooked up with an officer and the other with an enlisted man. Even though this was in violation of the UCMJ there was nothing done about it (I guess) since it was a trial. After the cruise we were told that having the women on board was a failure in that it would affect military readiness. I don't know what changed 12 years later when women first got orders to combat ships. A coworker who had just served 4 years in the USN, in the late 1990s, told me stories about went on onboard. When this happens on a cruise ship we call it the Love Boat. 🙂
Responding to racist or misogynistic and homophobic conspiracy theories before the investigation has determined a probable cause only feeds the growth of such conspiracies. To stop this, we all must stop proliferating these ridiculous statements by acknowledging them.
In the video the boat seems to be resting on port side, not starboard side
Will they refloat the Bayesian and is it worthwhile ?
I’d be interested in how much experience some of the intel/misogonony commentators have. I’m guessing it’s not the nigh on 30 years as a serving naval officer…… Seriously boys, (because that is all you are), you are just embarrassing yourselves. It seems that capable women are a threat to you. Maybe you should just follow that other shining example – Andrew T(w)at(e)?
This is the bsy channel. Thumbs up
Well done on making the point about the woman captain being not at the helm when the ship sank and about the navigation and radar systems.
Ultimately, the captain is responsible for the ship and will take responsibility
If you are interested in the complex technical specification and modification carried out on the vessel right up to its unfortunate sinking look up on the internet
DEFENSE MAJOR PROJECTS REPORT 2023 NZ around page 64 is all the information you will need to fill in the picture.
The captain's choice in partner orientation shows an obvious issue with her decision-making and psychology condition.
What kind of ridiculous comment you make about the NZ captain. "If she wasn't a woman no one would be questioning her qualifications". Yes they would you silly man!! She was commanding a $100 million naval ship when it sank on a well known shallow coral reef, causing significant environmental hazard. That should not happen. She should be sacked.
I have no axe to grind here but after 20 years seagoing experience including sea command I can say with some authority that to give someone – male or female – their first ever sea command, late in a professional career, in a large and technical vessel such as RNZS Manawanui is unusual. For that vessel to then be surveying a poorly charted reef, 1 mile offshore from Upolu Island, at night and in poor weather seems unduly hazardous, unnecessary and surprising. I'll say no more
She was a diversity hire 20 years ago. Irrelevant! She is qualified!
I think you assessment of CMDR Gray is 100% accurate. It has nothing to do with her gender. They wouldn't have put her in that position if she wasn't qualified. If she was male there would be no conversation…
New tv 4 program wonders what new images inside the wreck tell. Ha, telling they will spend millions to get it on land for nothing. If divers are handling and forcing everything as they do, every remain will be absolutely useless, even worse than usless
Disgraceful how people jump in before the facts have developed, I really don't understand the mind set. Good to see the international press picking up with your analysis, congrats!
