  1. I don't believe the truth of the NZ ship will ever be told. Their defense minister has other things more important than the best functional navy New Zealand can have. She also seems to be a real snotty witch. She is a lawyer and knows very little about military so her appointment was political as well.

  2. Thirty years ago I was told the large buoys out in San Trop bay were put there for the VIth fleet who used to visit the Sth of France often in the 60's 70's. True or not I tied our rib to one late at night to spend some quality time with the stew from a neighbouring yacht. Happy Days.

  3. Amazing stories. Thanks for the straight forward timely information. I get the impression so many people are in a hast or rush to get to their destination so quicky. Perhaps slowing doing and increase space and situational awareness to mitigate such preventable incidents. For the Superyacht, with 2nd incident was it the same Captain and crew? Peace

    Years ago I owned a 27' sailboat. I had a small Zodiac style inflatable with a 3hp outboard, enough for the boat to run at a reasonable speed.

    One thing I noticed at that time was the tendency for people to put the highest rated power, or larger motors on their boats. Instead of fitting the power needed for shuttling people at a reasonable speed. They fitted power for the maximum speed.

  5. @4:30 no, its is not at all unusual for either the yacht’s own tender or the marina's workboat to assist or be on standby to assist during a manoeuvre if the Master or harbourmaster judges it prudent. A Bowthruster’s effectiveness is profoundly affected by any wind it must push against during a given manoeuvre. If the ‘moderately strong’ wind Kingdom encountered in San Remo was around say 20 kts, her thruster may well have been at or near its limit to hold or move the bow to windward and therefore the Master’s request for assistance on this occasion cannot be said to constitute evidence of a dodgy thruster.

  6. There is an RYA Tender Operator course to ensure that all crew who operate these smaller tender vessels have the skills required to helm them safely. It would be interesting to find out if the person in charge of the vessel held that qualification and if indeed it was a member of the yacht’s crew that was helming at the time of impact.

  7. If this happened in an anchorage, why was the boat speeding in the first place. In an anchorage you should keep your speed low, max 3 or 5 kts if you ask me. First of all there are more boats, which means they get to 'enjoy' your wake when you race by at high speed. Second, day or night, there can be people in the water, for whatever reason possible. Third, by going fast you don't give yourself time to evade other traffic in the anchorage. Some cities enforce a max speed rule in anchorages, others don't. This incident shows why it is necessary to enforce a speed limit in anchorages.

  8. It won’t be happening now but, paying several thousand £s per day for, admittedly not a Superyatch rental, there is no way that my wife would get into a little inflatable to transfer ashore!
    I guess I need to save up for a boat with a proper launch – she was happy with a posh rental from the Airport at Venice so I think that is her minimum now!

  9. I very well know that buoy as we’re doing night training in the area. On the chart that buoy is on the limit of 20 / 5 kts zone. Normally in summer season the yellow “unlit” 5 kts marker buoys are further out then indicated in the chart, but for the sailing contest and end of season they have been removed. The buoy has a light mounted on it, but it is very poorly visible ( the same for the other buoy that has a very slight blue flashing light on it you can only see from one direction. Combine that all together with late night come back ( accident happened around 2h30 ) and looking at the damage of the buoy it was done at speed. The area can be very busy in the summer and we see lots of people with incorrect lights on their boats and going at very high speeds at night. ( even going plus 30 kts into the harbour at night ) we’ve even mentioned it to the harbour office that were amazed of the few accidents that happen with all the crazy boating done at night. Pointing fingers at people if your not on the boat would be inappropriate, let’s all learn a lesson here, adjust speed at night, wear proper protection like life jackets at night, and yes those buoys should be better indicated at night. Even the channel markers into st Maxime / st tropez in the summer could easily be fitted with proper lights.
