It's a really sad situation with the Loon. I started to watch their videos, but decided I didn't want to continue after seeing some videos. It seemed like they were more about having fun than being professional. Granted, it was more during times when nobody was on the yacht, but seeing how it turned out, I'm not really surprised. My opinion was correct.
I'm not tooting my horn, and I hope the best for everyone involved.
Is loon still for sale?
Loony coverup
Wow nothing like passing on knowledge, sounds like the lady was a great work place .
These owners are so wealthy and they can't pay the wages of the staff? How abusive and disrespectful! Employers who don't pay should be allowed to hire more staff!
Delphine is a truly spectacular boat, and I hope whoever buys her will do the right thing and restore her to her former glory. Somewhere on the web (I can't find it) is a video tour of the boat by the daughter of the Belgian owner her restored her in the late 90s and early aughts, Ineke Bruynooghe. It's a fascinating video and you can see Ineke's passion and love for the boat.
It would be an excellent situation if the former crew of The Delphine get to return to their 'lady".
Love the painting behind you – where is it?
Very good point on the build costs. Official Inflation figures are for products in a standard house holds basket of goods. They don't reflect luxury assets. Luxury assets inflate at a much higher rate. Look at the increases in the cost of a Lamborghini or super yacht. You are looking at 30K dollars to 50K dollars per gross tonne for a new construction yacht in Europe now with up to 65K per gross tonne for the very best quality. So it would cost approx. 65 million to 88 million to rebuild a similar vessel today brand new but without the history of this one. So as you say get your bids in now!
SS Delphine is so awesome to see
Tyler was, I believe, the first officer and he was supposed to be doing his first transatlantic crossing from: the med to carribbean before Christmas in order to give Paul time off.
the good old eSysman
So Paul Clark the driver of Real Wild is gone. A case of to much videoing becoming more important than the charters. Tyler is the new Captain he worked hard to become Captain.
Just out of interest, are the naval penalties the same as for drink drive in a car? Will he lose his captains license? Does it depend on the country A) where it happened or B) the country the boat is registered to? Thanks.
Alfa Nero news is excellent. A big problem in the industry I'm guessing. Pre haps you could do a special on this. To remind crew of their rights.
SS Delphine, the Lady, she is a piece of naval history. I do hope the new owner speaks to you to get in touch with the former crew to get her back to her former glory. She really deserves the refit and for the public to see her.
Chief just posted yesterday, no mention of the drama.
Natalia was the crew member ejected from the tender
Have you seen the BBC story today on the dive boat accident?
Inflation is calculated using the consumer price index, which oddly enough does not include the average cost to build a yacht. I think we need project cost here, so things like buildings or bridges. Or stadiums… Fenway Park in Boston was built around the same time as the SS Delphine for $650,000. The Texas Rangers just finished a stadium in 2020 with around the same capacity as Fenway… for $1.1 billion.
Glad you got a real Steam Engineer for that ship. They are very hard to find. Hope he gets paid well for his skills.
I'll take it
In 1967 I witnessed a large boat tied up at a small shipyard in Chelsea, Massachusetts at the mouth of the Mystic River in Boston Harbor. I didn't know what is was but took some pictures.( Which I can't find) The vessel was tied up , fan tail stern facing out toward the Harbor. It was huge. At some point after I found out what it was ( SS Delphine) and learned of its history. Commissioned by auto magnate Horace Dodge. Quadruple expansion steam engines designed by Horace Dodge, American built. Length was largest possible to traverse through existing Great Lakes locks and named for his daughter. I Read various articles that stated it became a training vessel for a maritime school under the name Dauntless which was its name when the Navy commandeered it during WWII. Many high level meetings took place on board. I believe Winston Churchill was aboard at one point. Important and historic meetings took place aboard. In June of 1990 I was in Norfolk, Virginia Harbor bringing a 52' Hatteras to Massachusetts, just the owner and myself. We were milling about waiting for a bridge to open and I spotted a tired looking vessel, stern out tied up port side
to a commercial pier. Cruised over to it , looking UP to it from the fly bridge of the Hatteras.
I said to the Hatteras's owner. "What do you think that is" He didn't know but looking at the fixtures on the hull and deck I said
It looks like an old giant yacht. In a minute I spotted a shadow of a name on the wood transom of a 30+' deck launch. The shadow was
Delphine. I flipped out and took some photos which I still have somewhere. She
was towed to Europe and bought and restored by a Belgium business man and his daughter. The hull was sounded out and tested to have been in solid condition. She was magnificently rebuilt and
I believe was the yacht of the year upon it return to
the Charter scene. I had a little communication with
the daughter and sent her
copies of my Norfolk, Va pictures. The published video with a 360 degree camera from all over the interior and exterior was wonderfully done. I wanted an American yachtsman to buy her and restore her and keep it in
the USA. Maybe it could happen in its current auction?
The first Hatteras called
Knits Wits built in 1960 was found and bought by Hatteras, totally restored to original
appearance but with modern engines and fittings without changing its appearance. It was a star at the 1985 Miami Boat Show. I got on board and have the pictures to prove it. The sign board outside the boat said it was originally powered with 2 275hp Lincoln engines. Many different Diesels since new. I asked a Hatteras official why don't you tell people the engines were CHRIS-CRAFT 430 cu in 275 hp Lincoln car based, no response 😅. I got some stories about It from a Hatteras rep who was the liason for my friend when he ordered his 52' Hatteras. Knit Wits has been resurrected at least twice since 1985 but they
modernized it's appearance and I think they killed it. Should have left it looking original.
Watched your video with the Cap Anna towing . Tim bat sea is a NYC bunker barge captain. He also has a private sail boat and just sailed it to the Florida the Bimini. He has a video every Tuesday
You would be nuts to work on a Russian owned or managed vessel.
So Captain Paul was drvimg…
So sad what has happened to M/Y Loon. Paul was the crew were enjoyable with their YouTube videos. But, as someone who has grown up on the water, goes to show how Important it is to Pay Attention to where you're heading.
@the_crewchef MY LOON chef YouTube channel is still active
Do you still work out of curiosity ?
I was wondering why they kept reposting videos on YouTube like it was new content
On You Tube 'The Crew Chef ' has a pinned statement about Loon on her channel,
Interestingly, in regards to the engineer of Delphine, in the maritime industry it used to be common place for positions to be handed down to family, like it was to the son. A tradition not seen as much these days, so it’s a cool segment of the story.
The Loon is a beautiful vessel, something one could only dream about sailing on. I hope all is well with her
I remember the Dodge Delphine when it was docked on Lake St.Clair in Grose Pointe , Michigan. It may have been docked at the Grose Point Yacht Club. I’m going back to the 1960’s. This was right by the Dodge Estate. We use go by and see her from our. 32’ cabin cruiser. I didn’t know she was still around.
The Loon captain was irritating. Maybe now we'll find out why the original videographer got fired…….
I remember Delphine being reconditioned some 22 years ago in Oostend, Belgium. They were using labour from eastern countries as there was a lot of welding t be done. I used to live around the corner and was amassed at the amount of work that needed to be done.
steam is something from a bygone era, as someone who was enlisted on a 1200 PSI boiler ship back in the day, my respects.
P.S. It should be noted that there are vast differences between engine types, so the crew's experience is rather limited to that ship's class of engine, as much as my experience is specific to BB-66's auxiliary equipment. When the ship is decommissioned you essentially have 2 options, learn a new engine or retire as I did.
Delphine – a beautiful ship. So few steam ships still in service – I hope we see her returned to her former glory. No temptation to set up a eSysman gofundme for purchase and restoration? 😆
CANGARDA is a 1901 steam powered yacht recently shipped from Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, ME to a collector in Turkey. I would think he would be interested in the (lady) DELPHINE.
Thanks
Icarus flew too close to the Sun and his wings melted.
I hope someone with the correct passion for the history and the wherewithal to do it correctly ends up with that beautiful yacht. Sure, you could go get a new and amazing yacht for that type of investment but you will never get the majesty and respect from those that know.
Crewing your yacht with South Africans is akin to filling up your Ferrari with diesel.
Looks like Paul, the captain got his karma
In regards to the Loon, it’s a cautionary tale. What would have been an illustrious career for Captain Clarke wiped away by a moment of poor judgement
The Loon website still shows 'Captain Paul' at the bottom of the main page, and has multiple references to him, including press articles featuring him and other staff we know to no longer be aboard. Looks like they have a lot of work to do on it – may well be going on in the background, but it's been a few weeks now, so … ???
Loon channel has been wiped
he was drink boating & if caught his career is over. very sad
M/Y Loon just went to poop so fast shame that, hopefully it won't stain the crew too badly.
Loon was or is being sold.
