   I am not a marine engineer nor a naval architect, but 10-15 years ago I bought about a dozen instruments called planimeters, which used to be used to measure the area of irregular shapes drawn to scale (fields on maps, for example). Then I got a more complex variant, called an integrator, which was also capable of determining the location of the centre of gravity – or the centre of buoyancy in the case of ships. These instruments revolutionised ship design in the mid-nineteenth century. To get a better understanding of how this instrument was used, I bought a reprint of a book first published in 1885, "A Treatise on the Stability of Ships" by Sir Edward J Reed. It will be calculations of the type detailed in this book, nowadays done on computer, which will be used to establish why this yacht sank.
   I understand that about half a dozen of these yachts were built, but this one is unique in as much as the owner specified a taller mast, presumably for bragging rights. This will not have helped matters, as it will have provided extra leverage to push the boat over. As best as I can find out, the wind drag on cylindrical mast is proportional to the square of the wind speed, so calculations of wind loading need to be done very carefully. The loading is also proportional to the air density, so I end with a question that I hope that someone can answer. Does the effective air density increase when the air contains a suspension of water droplets (ie rain)? I draw an analogy with my area of expertise, ceramics. A suspension of silica, density 2.6 kg/litre, in water, density 1 kg/litre, will typically have a density of 1.6 kg/litre.

9. Why in the world are the officials using fishing line and wrapping paper to “seal” the impounded yacht? Never heard of malleable wire? At least learn how to handle monofilament if you are going to use it.

Commercial Diver of the last 13 years here it’s hard to imagine the salvage crew didn’t do a cold tap or cold cut to allow gas buildup to escape the mast before beginning their burning a.k.a. cutting operations with the Broco torch that being said the salvage companies do not want to face another tragedy Lawsuit or bad reputation many of the tasks in this salvage operation include intricate tasks that would be performed much more efficiently by a human, depending on how much of the whole is embedded into the seafloor sending the messenger lines under the Sailboat with ROV’s is quite time-consuming and inefficient. This is something in my opinion that would be safe for Divers to do and quicker as they would be able to dredge under the hole if needed to send the lines through anyways thanks for the updates. 11. Thanks for confirming that ROVs are being used to clear bottom clay for the lifting slings. In the old days – and maybe still for smaller salvage jobs – divers would risk their lives to place suction hoses under a hull. 😮
