19. I can fully understand switching off AIS for privacy particularly if you're a celebrity or have other reasons for safeguarding your privacy and location. AIS was developed as an aid to maritime navigation, not as a beacon so that everyone on the planet could see where you were on a website. The fact that yacht owners have to threaten to sue Marine Traffic to get them to stop displaying their location says volumes. Easier to turn it off when not underway or when not critical to safety. Since IMO regulations are enforced by member states, it's almost certain that violating regulations regarding use of AIS will not be enforce short of an incident where it's use or non-use is a factor.

20. since anyone can use Marine traffic to track a yacht there are associated risks. Piracy issues, privacy issues, and maybe former owners with government connections recovering the yacht back after impound and resale. Unpredictability with AIS is probably crucial. They turned it on going through crowded water, so the safety goal was met.

24. the names being covered and the AIS being turned off is simple; people value privacy. if you had 10000 people outside your house's bathroom window with hd video cameras looking into your shower 24/7 are you guys thinking you wouldn't cover up all windows?? of course you would.

28. In truth, it would be hard to prosecute AIS deactivation – they just have to show one death threat or crazy remark to justify deactivating their AIS. Probably won't be long until they do something like the FAA did to provide privacy to the super-rich.

35. Doesn't the enforcement body have to be more powerful than the entities it seeks to enforce against? These little ports don't have any way to hold these ships accountable. How is this a surprise? What mechanism would even be used?

36. Going dark illegally? You’re allowed to do whatever so long as you don’t scuttle it on purpose, or cause a pollution incident.

37. The yachts AIS if you switch it off, you would not receive any AIS targets on your INS, radar/ecdis. These AISes are not WAIS(warship AIS). Switching it off it is a risky move sailing in night and or low visibility conditions. You would only be rely on your Radars echo on the PPI. however you would miss out maybe fishing bouys and other small targets that it is difficult to detect with your S and/or X-band.

    I've seen them personally and was trying to identify them via AIS. Only via searching through the list of the biggest motoryachts I was able to identify them both.
    Was wondering why they would turn off AIS completely for such an extended period of time, especially since there is a significant greek naval base and NATO forces.
